CompUSA to close 15 stores in The States.

I post this in the hopes that someone might pick-up a good deal. Del Amo, Beverly and City of Industry are close to me but funds are tight.

poor customer service and usually a pfy that gets pissed when you pick up just the blowout deals and decline the extended warrenty.

I'm not sure where the Stevens Creek store is, and have probably driven by it more than a couple of time - IOW bad location. Fry's Electronics is more my style, and Fry's is probably hitting C-USA pretty hard. I know Fry's is in SoCal, but I'm not sure about the rest of the US.

That's the one closest to me. Awful store. It had no business after Best Buy moved in a few hundred feet away, and it still had no business after Best Buy moved three miles north.

Run by crooks, like the manager who didn't want to exchange a PC133 memory module with solder on two of its gold fingers. He said it wasn't defective because it checked out OK -- in a miracle 15-second test done out of my view.


Another time, I tried to return some flash RAM just 30 minutes after purchase because when I got home I discovered that its had blister pack had been either badly sealed at the factory or opened and then resealed by the store. CompUSA denied resealing it and accused me of doing that (almost 15-minute drive time each way, leaving me no more than 5 minutes to use out my special package resealing machine). They first said I had to pay a 15% restocking fee for opening the package, then they said it didn't matter who opened the package, which to me was an admission that they had resealed it.

A couple of shoplifters once managed to steal a CPU from this store, not from the shelves but from a display computer. Considering how few customers there are at any time, the employees must have been really stupid or just didn't care about their jobs.

Finally America is getting sick of big box retail and their crappy service! I hope they close them all.

But keep Fry's open! I live within walking distance of one, and even if I don't need any electronics or computer stuff, they have the best magazine rack in town.

Too bad about CompUSA. They used to be a good store back in the mid nineties. Back then you could return just about anything with no problem. The company just got too big I think. Stopped caring about the customer and started to sell cheaply made stuff like those horrible powersupplys.

Me neither - I know where the Circuit City, Office Depot and Radio Shack are. They're clustered somewhere close to intersection of StevensCreek and San Tomas. I'm guessing the CompUSA is (was) in one of the small strip malls near the Lawrence Expwy. overpass - not a great location, and in any event there's another CompUSA nearby at Lawrence and El Camino that's more visible (and even that has been mostly empty in comparison with the Fry's).

BTW, it isn't easy to return stuff at Fry's either, because of the huge queues and very few return counters.

Fry's in Campbell recently improved/enlarged their returns area, but it isn't huge and it's very close to the entrance. Returning stuff there isn't one of my favorite things in the world, though I have sense enough not to try it the week or two after Christmas. Mrs. S in CA hates/fears Fry's parking lot, so she usually buys electronic "toys" at Circus City on Bl Hill/Almaden (why she tolerates the Cosco-related traffic in that parking lot, I don't understand).

So, you're in NW Phx or Glendale lmc?

Yup - that one off Bascom/Hamilton(?) is dangerous - the footwalk crosses the entrance to the
indoor parking lot, and visibility is poor both ways. The road lanes and signals near the entry and exit are tricky, as well.

All the malls in Los Gatos/Blossom Hill/Almaden area were better, nicer and less crowded than the ones in the middle of the valley, though things may have chaged now.

Nope, halfway around the world now. I've stayed in Foster City, Campbell and Santa Clara - the last was from 1999-2002. Some of my favorite haunts were WeirdStuff Warehouse at Mathilda/Caribbean, Halted Specialties at Central expwy, and Excess Solutions at Brokaw(?).
