I was given a Sony Trinitron TV the other day. Its a 32 or 36 inch model made in 2004. When my friend had a power outage at his house everything in the entertainment center except the TV came back online when the power was restored. I don't mess around inside of TV's or monitors for any reason but I did look into this one a little. By the dust inside of it I can tell I was the very first to take the back off the thing. The little glass fuse tested fine. None of the jumper wires on the PCB look to be burned. The TV is just dead in the water...The first time I plugged it up and hit the power button I think I herd that usual high voltage click but after that it did nothing. Do you all think it would be worth it to take this unit to a TV repair shop?

Re: Sony Trinitron
So you heard the click of the relay did the set then shut down by disengaging the relay another click?
Aside for the obvious check for any cracked solder joints especially in the HOT, Driver transistor, and flyback areas.
If it was a chassis shutdown it could be the HOT or bad flyback problem. The high voltage circuits are most likely to be responsible for chassis shutdown.
It could be a low voltage supply problem too newer sets tend to rely more on an onboard switcher for powering the ICs which comes out of standby mode when the high voltage comes comes up. Older TVs relied heavily on the flyback for secondary voltage sources.
Without a multimeter and troubleshooting it's just speculation though. Any of the above problems are easily rectified if you can find someone who isn't a module swapper.Last edited by Krankshaft; 03-16-2010, 07:00 AM.Elements of the past and the future combining to make something not quite as good as either.

Re: Sony Trinitron
More details...The set is a Sony KV-27S15. I was wrong on the year it was made. The correct date would be sept 1994. I also checked for power where cord connects to the PCB and I did get 115 vac. I plugged in the set again and hit the power button but I didn't hear the unit make any noises at all this time. The noise the first time could have been the plastic front creaking or my imagination. If it would atleast come up I did read that the LED's on the front just might blink out a trouble code for me. This would atleast point me to the right area. I think the Power supply just may have a problem. I'm going to do a closer inspection of the underside of the PCB in this area. It just may have a fried trace."It ain't what you don't know that gets you into trouble. It's what you know for sure that just ain't so."

Re: Sony Trinitron
I'm expert on these Sony consumer type. When you turn on, the red LED kept blinking and blinking and blinking for long time? No whine from flyback, no orange glow from the heaters in the gun assembly?
Fuse is not best way to assess fault finding. Most particularly Sony CRT TVs.
1. In these models, flyback transformers is extremely RARE to fail. I have not had one come in bad and I have fixed MANY (more than 35).
2. Sony CRT stuff is heavy on bad solder joints especially around the horizontal circuit and some in vertical circuit.
Always unplugged, pull the circuit board up, unplug speaker plug on the manboard and unplug the plug for the power supply sub board. Withdraw the big board and prop up.
Ok, first thing use your multimeter. Go directly to the horizontal transistor (I bet this is 2SC5148). If it is shorted, it is solder joints that hammered the horizontal transistor especially in the base drive circruit and to be direct, that's on the base drive transformer (grey box with 4 or 5 pins, you will find bad joints there, use magifying lens).
Oh yes, as unfortune effect, shorted horizontal transistor shot the power supply too. You'll need: pair of transistors, 1W .47 fusible resistor and possible need VDR replaced if one is found shorted (use your meter, but I have not found one that is bad).

Re: Sony Trinitron
Wizard are you anyplace close to Baltimore??? I have GREAT FEAR of the insides of a TV set... From what I've been told ZAP just might be the last thing that you will hear forever! I would love for you to have a look at it because you know how not to get ZAPPED! Could it just be a bad solder joint with no dead parts? I didn't get around to looking inside of it today because I spent my day on the Escort. I can tell you this will be the last car that I mess with that has set outside, and not moved in five years. If its something special, yes, but not for a Ford Escort Turd type car!"It ain't what you don't know that gets you into trouble. It's what you know for sure that just ain't so."

Re: Sony Trinitron
You all are crazy, However, we had a set with almost the exact same problem and it turned out to be the power supply, The shop we used ended up replacing it three times and the fourth we said forget about it and bought a new set. we moved right around the same time. never told us why they kept failing, in retrospect i would have to say there must have been something wrong with the line voltage in the apartment, Good luck with it, The color and picture on those sony's is pretty hard to beat in my opinion.39 Soldering Iron burns And Counting

Re: Sony Trinitron
My wife uses a big old Dell Trinitron monitor and the picture is great. I on the other hand I use and old Gateway VX900. Its not bad but its getting tired. Night sceens in DVD's are too dark now. To see things right I have to go play with the gamma settings and over drive the monitor. I get around this by playing movies on the Laptop which is connected to the flat screen which sits right next to the Gateway VX900."It ain't what you don't know that gets you into trouble. Re: Sony Trinitron
Now as far as the 25Kv goes, you guys are MENTAL! I take it that the 25Kv is in the bright red=dead wire going to the tube. I don't even care for taking a hit from a spark plug wire which can be 45,000 volts but at almost no amps."It ain't what you don't know that gets you into trouble. It's what you know for sure that just ain't so."

Re: Sony Trinitron
That 25KV is only fraction of a mA. Just hurt like OUCH and a jerk. NOTE I did not say unplug that red cable! Pay attention!! It is left in place and you can pull the board and prop up against TV with 2 wires or three wires unplugged (power supply, degaussing coil plug, speaker plug usually.)
And handle board by the edges and plastic bits.

Yup I've been bitten too I got muscle spasms in my ass for a minute or two.
I discharge it with my HV probe before I remove it now.
There is no need to remove it though most sets leave enough slack to stand the board up for servicing. You may have to pull the CRT neck board off the tube though.Elements of the past and the future combining to make something not quite as good as either.

Re: Sony Trinitron
Why don't I just take it to the old TV repair guy up the road. Even if I get it apart without getting zapped it still won't get fix because I don't know what the hell I'm doing....LOL HV probe..No plastic screwdrivers...no Knowledge... NO! Multimeter...yes soldering Iron...yes...solder...yes...soldering paist...yes. As you can see, I should just leave it alone. My Son would take it apart. He says a TV can't bite you...LOL His day is coming."It ain't what you don't know that gets you into trouble. It's what you know for sure that just ain't so."

After that, follow the leads given by others. Bad solder joints, especially on the vertical and horizontal drivers is the first place to look.
I'm a lot less enthusiastic about putting any significant amount of money into it. Locally, the 32" and 36" Sony Trinitrons are selling - or I should say , NOT selling for $50-$75 on Craigslist. On the average, one or two are listed in the Free section as 'Working'.
In your area, things look as bad. A Sony KV-27FV17 has been listed at $25 since Feb 20th.
