The panel tabs are at the bottom of the set. The house where I picked up the set did have a young child and I reckon it was probably sticky hands on the lcd panel that when wiped off run down between the panel and plastic enclosure. But just guess work.

I don't recall any blinking of the front panel leds.

How did it get there? Could this be a "problem" from the factory? I see alot of these sets with distorted pictures.....

Maybe the same guy thats responsible for the 7 blinkers on 2011 models....

Yes I initially thought it was solarization so changed the Tcon but unfortunately no difference.

Then heated the BGA chip on the mainboard but ended up frying it. Replaced the mainboard and annoyingly absolutely no difference.

Finally decided to look at the tabs and post#16 picture shows what I found. That tab was in line with the feint line running vertically down the screen. Looked like and felt like marmite.

Since it has been cleaned the set has worked flawlessly.

So cleaning that tab fixed the solarization? Just when I think I'm starting to catch on that t-con and solarization go together this stuff happens.

It certainly looks extremely similar except in your picture it looks a lot more noticeable than say in the 1st picture, Post#1.
The other thing that was very noticeable was that the picture would also look solarized dependant on image displayed. See picture 3 where the thick line goes through her hair.

I've seen a lot of these E5 models lately but i thought it was panel problem so i left them as is....
Just saw this Panasonic E5 tv. You reckon its the same fault ?

EDIT: Wrong picture , picture coming soon :p

All done and the set is now up and running as it should.

Due to my reluctance to strip down to the panel when looking at it previously, I reckoned that now I had nothing else to lose so decided to take a look at the tabs. So off came the side strips to gain access and what do I find; only what appears to be some tacky brownish gunge similar to Marmite, across one of the tabs.

Cleaned it all off and run up the set for a perfect picture.

I could kick myself for not looking earlier especially since there was always a top to bottom strip on the screen about 4" wide in line with that tab that was showing up whenever the picture content was dark.

Just one last observation. When the screen is displaying the auto tune menu and occupies the full screen space, the picture is perfect. No solarization or flickering.

I have finally resurrected the TV again. Both the main board and tcon have been replaced however there is absolutely no difference in the display.

This is now leading me to conclude that the panel must be at fault.

The picture still displays a solarized look but generally only on the lower half of the screen and this is accompanied by flickering brightness, again only in the lower half of the screen. The backlights when viewed from the rear are steady and do not appear to be flickering.

When entering the service mode Self Check routine everything seems to be OK but it does give an SOS 1, but I do not know what that is referring to.

Interested in anyone's thoughts before I split the set up for spares.

+1 Yes it definitely needs a better heatsinking solution. As I said the current method is close to useless.

Ok thanks for update, now we know bga is a common issue. I advise you put in some prevention methods-ie bigger heatsink with better thermal compound or thermal pad under the board or even a fan but probably over kill.

It did look like it was a BGA problem. After heating up the BGA chip the picture would flick between OK and solarized.

Decided to have another go and successfully killed it.

    Replacement board on order.

Again if I can ask what temperature and time you normally run at.
There are components on the top side of the BGA module so these may prove to be a nuisance, however I can cover them with Kapton tape to stop them flying off.

I've found a supplier on ebay selling a replacement board which is not too expensive so if it fails I can order it.
    Thanks

    Edit
The problem may well be the BGA chip because it's linked to a heatsink using a thermal pad and the heatsink is held in place using plastic clips. The pressure applied to the chip is abysmal and the heatsink virtually floats freely above it.

Try reflowing your BGA nothing to lose i have just fixed a 60 inch Sharp the same way it sounds wrong compared to a rework station but i use a dremel torch and some TOPNIK tk83 Flux always works for me
so far done a 47 inch LG led bad BGA (lines all over the screen and tv switching off) still working on my wall 9 months later and a few more tvs for friends all still working

    good luck

What's the most reliable home method to redo the BGA chip. I have a hot air station and a thermocouple meter so that I can monitor the chip temperature. An idea of temperature(s) and time(s) would be welcomed.
I had a Samsung Smart TV last week with dodgy BGA (no picture until i pressed on it).

I stuck the board on my rework machine, I used the bottom heaters to warm the board then my hot air station to reflow from the top after putting some quality flux on all four sides.
I used my backup thermocouple and got the top to about 230C and held it for a few seconds.

TCL 50S535 bad tcon or panel issue?
    by x_orange90_x
Just bought this for 10 bucks yesterday hoping to fix it. The guy said water dropped inside from a dehumidifier hose and it started showing black and white vertical bars then went blank. When I got it home and turned it on it came on fine and displayed correctly but I was noticing faint vertical bars in the image. After a little bit I turned it off and back on and it was a black screen again. I opened it up to check for water damage and corrosion but didn't find anything of the sort. I cleaned the ribbons anyway and reconnected them but still got a blank screen. If I disconnect the right side...

    TCL 49S405 double image
    by howardc64
LCD displays a 2nd image slighty offset vertically. And multiple pairs of black lines along the bottom. Probably common as google "TCL 49S405 double image" pulls up this ifixit post ( link ) with identical ( nearly, but their fault seems to be on the other half of the panel than mine ) problem without solution.

This one looks to be a more difficult to diagnose because most? of TCON seems integrated ( CSOT BGA on buffer baord) into the left panel edge board ( looking from rear of TV) There are 2 buffer boards for each 1/2 of the screen. Main connects to the left buffer board...

Panasonic LED TV TC-40A420U - Replaced Backlight LEDs but now no image/display or garbled
    by signal.quest
I have a Panasonic LED TV TC-40A420U. The TV was given to me as an attempt to fix or throw out. I replaced the Backlight LEDs and now the screen lights up, but there is no image/display. If I play with the up/down buttons I can get the display to change from black to garbled. I can't get sound from HDMI but not sure of what input is selected. I have no remote control. When I connect a laptop to the HDMI ports it recognizes a Panasonic TV for display and sound output but I can't see or hear anything through the TV. This makes me think the mainboard is OK, but not sure if mainboard can...

    Panasonic OLED TX-65GZ950E no image
    by JSBJSB
    Hello everyone,

so I have this problem with this OLED that had a LED blinking issue at first.
It was blinking twice so it means according to similar service manuals (I cannot find the proper one) EVDD 24V SOS, Panel or TCON Fault.
Also, the connector from PSU to TCON which supplies 24V was burned (changed it) and saw threads about this topic but didn't relate completely to mine.

First thing was to tape the signal ERRORDETECTION so it would try to initialize. And it didn't so I unplugged the panel from TCON.
Then it started up and went to green light...

tv had backlight on, sound working - responds to the remote control but no image.

check tcon board - had 12v in but no other voltages present.
when disconnected left ribbon cable - got back voltages and half image with lines and distorsion

when leaving only left side connected - again no voltages and no image.

put a tape on all (cd?! lines) on the left ribbon cable and got complete but distorted image (horizontal lines).

kept trying to block less pins on the left ribbon cable...
