The LG 37LE5300 TV i just fixed for myself has an "eco mode" feature, which i actually ended up liking, as set to "auto" it turns the backlight down to minimum in the dark or very dim light. My eyes are happier if i turn my screens really dim at night.
The only thing i don't like about it is that the steps are sometimes noticeable. Some more bits in the processor DAC wouldn't have hurt. But since that cannot be changed, i will have to make another circuit for this. I believe the inverter takes PWM directly so a simple filter will not cut it.
Anyone else interested?
