    Samsung LN-S4095D - Won't turn on; Power LED 5 blinks - I think I see a problem

I acquired this TV today and noticed that the top plastic casing was melted at one point right above the T-CON board from what I can only assume is overheating.

I did a quick inspection of the tops of the boards and everything else appears okay at first glance.

Anyone have any idea what caused this or can point me in the right direction for troubleshooting? I've got a DMM but I'm not very familiar with troubleshooting component level electronics. I've also got a decent soldering setup.

    Images Here

Quick handheld shots as I am hanging out with my kids, I will take better ones later once they go to sleep.

Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Wow at first glance I would say that thing at a lack of cooling it might have been stuck underneath the area that didn't allow it to vent
Did I leave the soldering iron on?

Its possible someone placed something on top of the set (like a blanket or coat) preventing proper ventilation. You did'nt say if the tv is working. if the tv works I would not worry about it.

That would have had to get pretty damn hot to do that! Over 170°C surely

It doesnt turn on. It clicks and the power led blinks 5 times when i plug it in. It is unresponsive after that unless i unplug and plug back in.

time to troubleshoot, try to upload some good clear pics. of the tv, of all the boards and clear pics. of each board, careful when working with power supply board HIGH VOLTAGE. ok, strike that, I see the pics.

I guess it is time to measure voltages! Is the back light coming up?

no back light. Is there a guide you guys can point me to that will show me where to measure the voltages and what they should be? I did check two of the fuses on the power supply and they checked out good. I also know to be very careful around the large capacitors on the power supply board. Should I get a resistor so that I can drain them safely?

maybe try unplug bl-on from power supply to main board, should be labeled on the board by the connector cable, see if the back lights come on.

Im assuming this is the backlight control cable? I removed it and no backlight. Tv still clicked when i plugged in and power led blink 5x. I noticed these 2 LED are illuminated on the mainboard when plugged in. please see attached photo

hard for me to tell from the pic., backlight on is labeled on some power boards as bl-on.

that's why we need good pictures from the whole board you have trouble with. maybe you can take another one with the pin outs

I thought that looked like a pretty small board.

I dont know which board I am having a problem w/. I'm looking for guidance on how to find out which board(s) have issues. I have provided pictures of all the boards except for the inverter in my original post.

here is the side that I unplugged from the power supply board that I suspect is backlight on.

thats the problem, we have no way of knowing that this is a different post, theres 100s of posts, the only pic. we see is the one with 25 percent of the board.

Ok, apologies. Let me try this again. Samsung LN-S4095D, loud click when TV is plugged in, follow by five blinks from power button LED. Top vent on plastic frame was melted near the TCON board.

I have a multimeter but I need some help figuring out where to measure. No blown or bulging caps as far as I can tell.

Start on the power supply. There is a 26 pin header on the top right of the power supply board. Plug everything back together and test that header with your DMM. The pin outs for it is marked between the 2 transformers and the big aluminum heat sink. Put the negative lead to GND and probe all others. Note the voltages down with the pin numbers and post back.
Don't touch the hot side of the power supply, just that header.

Yes, you can't measure voltages if the thing is turned off\unplugged. Just be careful to avoid the primary side where the mains comes in, and watch the heatsinks too, they are usually grounded but not always.

http://www.repairfaq.org/sam/tvfaq.htm#tvsaf It's about CRTs but the high-voltage\mains safety points still apply.
