    Sony kdl32l4000 tcon or inverter?

This set has a punched-in damaged panel.

Powers on. Mainboard and psu seem OK as I'm able to get sound, remote activity , etc.

Backlight flashes briefly on power up, but then goes dark.

I'm wondering if I can somehow test/isolate the inverter and the tcon to know if one or the other is likely OK. Thanks for any help!

If the panel is badly damaged a bulb may be cracked... this will cause this symptom.

Does it seem like the TCON is probably OK, but the inverter is damaged, based on the symptom?

If screen is smashed--you cant tell about T-Con!--That does the picture, but if panel smashed--you'll not have a picture regardless!

IF a bulb has gone--will give 2 sec to black regardless of whether the BL board is OK.--Thats to say, the BL board could still be faulty but you'll not be able to tell--IF you've got a broken bulb...

Then again--IF you plan to fix--You'll be replacing all this lot anyway!.

thanks alastair! I guess that's how the cookie crumbles when you have a broken panel. No real way to test TCON, and in some cases the inverter. Well, I heard the inverter can be tested with a bunch of bulbs ... but I'm not sure building that rig is worth it for me just yet.

These older Sony's also have protection circuits. So, you could have a fault on any of the boards and still have the backlights fire. They should attempt to start 3 times, and then the LED will flash a code and the TV will go into protection mode. At that point, you have to disconnect the power source to reset.

kimback: Well, this one isn't going into protection mode. Also, I've found in most cases that the TCON is OK when the screen is cracked. However, I'm now realizing that I am making a pretty big assumption there. Even so, I've sold several from cracked screen units, and no complaints yet. Got a bunch on the shelf too.

In my experience, even with a broken screen, it's (usually) possible to determine whether a Tcon is good or not. Of course, you can't test it 100%. Usually, unless you have a straight horizontal crack across the top (or bottom if that's where the TABs are), you can see enough of the picture to make an educated guess. That's saying, your average accidental damage, not the "I got into a fight with my gf and she smashed it with a hammer." (I've seen a few of them too).

kimback: that's a good point, and I've definitely tried to see what I can see with a cracked screen that's still "working". However, if I understand this right, if there is major screen damage and the BL won't stay on, then you are probably looking at a broken bulb. In that case, you can only "bench test" the inverter (with lamps), but can't really see anything regarding the TCON?

Yes, you are correct. With no backlights, there's not much you can do. Depends on the design, but sometimes you can manually turn the inverter on using a 5k resistor, just as you would jump ps_on. On the older Sony's (not sure about newer ones), what's often mistaken for inverters are actually balancer boards, and the transformers which power them are usually on the PS or, in some, are on separate boards.

Sony 8K XBR-75Z8H White Screen Vertical Bars Tcon Code. Help Needed🙏
                        by Daren87
                        Hello everyone,

I've recently been given a Sony 8k Z8H. It's got a white screen with two vertical black bars. At times it's given me the 5 blink Tcon code. Testing voltage on the Tcon I can see some low or missing voltage. I've done a basic visual check of cables and the COF. Not seeing anything obvious. The original Tcon seemed to have good caps until turning it over. On the bottom I found maybe 10 caps with both sides of the caps shorting to ground. I thought ok these caps and likely other components on the Tcon are shorted so let's try a replacement Tcon. I just received the...

                        Sony KD-55X9000F TCON Issue
                        by thelankanguy
The TV shows a black screen with no image.
TCON ribbon connectors were disconnected individually for image and there was no half image even.
Later both ribbons were disconnected and TCON voltages were tested.
12V, 3.3V, 1.8V were seen present but VONE signal reads 0V.
There is also a short to ground in this circled inductor.
Is this a TCON issue or something else ?...

                        Sony KD-55AG9 TCON?
                        by bbrain
                        Hi,

I have this problem with my Sony 55' AG9.
                        It flashes 4x.
I have found the service manual, and seems it is the TCON.

Before I buy a TCON can someone check the vid?

                        Thanks in advance!...

Hi, hoping for some views on this one which I've not come across before. The TV generates an image that has 12 noticeable bands across it. The image is still there and accurate, but the colour (or perhaps the brightness) changes gradually across each band which creates a noticeable 'step change' at the edge of each band. Given it's a 4K TV with 2160 rows of pixels, I'm guessing the 12 bands correspond to 12 gate drivers of 180 rows each. If this guess is right, then perhaps:
                        a) all the gate drivers are malfunctioning the same way (which seems unlikely), or
                        b) the Tcon board is malfunctioning,...

Just bought this for 10 bucks yesterday hoping to fix it. The guy said water dropped inside from a dehumidifier hose and it started showing black and white vertical bars then went blank. When I got it home and turned it on it came on fine and displayed correctly but I was noticing faint vertical bars in the image. After a little bit I turned it off and back on and it was a black screen again. I opened it up to check for water damage and corrosion but didn't find anything of the sort. I cleaned the ribbons anyway and reconnected them but still got a blank screen. If I disconnect the right side...
