LG 50PV400 not turning on/relay clicking

    Hi everyone,

I've been having trouble with my 50PV400 for some time now. While plugged in, the standby light is on, but turning it on (using either the remote or soft power button on the TV) causes the relay to click on, then click back off after about 1 second.

This seems to be a very common problem, and I've tried everything short of replacing boards (yet). I have the training manual for the 50PV450 (thanks tom66 for your manual database) which is basically the same TV. I've measured all voltages from the SMPS, powered the SMPS up in stages as described in the manual, did the two 100w light bulb test, and everything is fine. The SMPS comes on fine in stages when not connected to the main board, and the problem occurs regardless of whether the SMPS is connected to the Y-SUS board or light bulbs.

ALL voltages out of the SMPS are nearly exactly what the manual specifies, both for standby mode and when powered on. AC_Det is present (jumps from 0v to 4.45v when the relay clicks on, then back to 0v when it clicks off). All voltages are stable. I cannot find anything wrong at all with the SMPS functionally, and there are no physical signs. I also connected a computer to the serial port and was able to issue power on commands but that resulted in the same thing as pressing the power button. I was never able to get any bootloader text from the serial port, so it doesn't look like the firmware actually starts loading.

Now it gets stranger: occasionally the TV will actually come on. Very rarely. And when it does, it works perfectly. Picture is as good as the day I bought it and everything functions fine.
Now it gets even more weird: if the TV does actually come on, if I shut it off by killing the power (ie. pulling power cord or powerbar switch, NOT with the remote or soft power button), it will always come back on again and work fine when power is restored - EVERY TIME. But as soon as it powers off "normally" by using the remote or soft power button, it goes back to just clicking when trying to turn on. If it ever manages to come back on properly, I can kill the power and it will come on again after power is restored.

I had been using the TV reliably by powering it on/off with a power bar for some time and was ok with that. But last night someone in my house mistakenly turned it off with the remote and now it's back to not working. It's almost as if when powering it off properly (going into standby mode) it enters some kind of error condition that won't allow it to turn back on, but just killing power skips that. All I'm left with is thinking it's a main board issue.

At this point, my thought is to order a new main board but I wanted to see if anyone else out there had anything they might be able to offer before I spend the money. Thanks in advance for anything anyone might be able to offer!

strange, could it be your ir board?

      Thanks for your reply.

I suppose the IR board is possible. I don't think I've actually tried applying power with that board disconnected from the main board so I can see what happens in that case. Normally if the TV is going to work, it powers on as soon as it's plugged in, so I'll see what happens without the IR board connected at all.

I'm not sure how that would relate to what seems to be consistent behaviour once it does come on and I shut it off by killing the power... but at this point, I'm out of ideas and open to considering pretty much anything.

not exactly sure, could it be a cap that's maybe borderline?

meaning works good at times and not at others.

might be the a board, the flow charts in the service manuals have helped me a lot.

Re: LG 50PV400 not turning on/relay clicking

It's possible, although the behaviour isn't totally random... I used it everyday for the month and a half by using a power bar to turn it on and off and it consistently worked every single time. But now that it got shut off "properly" it won't work. This happened before too, I was using it for weeks with the power bar trick, then it got shut off properly and wouldn't work. I don't know what caused it to start working again - over a couple of weeks I tried to get it to come on and one day it just finally did.

I feel like if it was a questionable cap, it wouldn't work consistently every single time with the power bar trick and only stop once it's turned off properly.

I don't mind replacing the main board; I'm just trying to be reasonably sure that's the most promising course of action before I spend the money.

According to the manual, the main board should be sending the M_ON signal to the SMPS, which turns on Vs and Va, but this never happens. The main board sends R_ON which turns on the relay, all the voltages come up (except Vs and Va), and then instead of activating M_ON, the main board deactivates R_ON, the relay shuts off and the SMPS goes back to standby. Except when it finally works and I'm using the power bar to turn it on and off - then it works properly every time.

This is the behaviour I'd expect to see if AC_Det was missing, but it's not. It seems like the main board is seeing some kind of fault and shutting things down... but I can't explain why it works consistently when killing external power to turn it off and stops when turning it off properly (or what makes it start working again if I keep trying and messing around with it)

I would say Main board. For whatever reason it is not reacting to the external command to start but when you pull the plug the main board remembers its last state (like a pc). So when power is applied it turns on because the turn on command is INTERNAL.

Pure speculation - if the main is cheap enough you might want to try it.

                    Try this.
Unplug connector between main board and power board. Unplug it on the main board side.
Put a wire jumper between pins AUTO GND and GND.
On the control board disconnect the thick ribbon cable between control & main.
Jumper the two holes marked "EXT AUTO GEN"
Plug the TV in (everything else connected as normal) you should get test patterns, do you?

Thanks for the reply... I have it working again for the moment, but I will try this next time I have a problem (don't want to risk messing it up for now).

What I did over the weekend was actually disconnect AUTO GND from the main board so that the SMPS comes fully on without needing RL_ON and M_ON from the main board. When I applied power, the panel came on as expected, but the standby light was still on (since the mainboard wasn't booted). However, in this state I was able to then power up the main board with the remote or soft power button.

I'm not sure why this works, but I was even able to shut it off and turn it back on with the remote (as mentioned, this previously caused it to stop working again).

I'd still like to solve the root problem, but for now I seem to be able to use the TV reliably in this state without spending any money on it. Something is still fishy, and it still feels to me like the main board, as mmartell says, but I can't explain why having the SMPS come full on lets it turn on properly. I'll see how things go from here.

                      Thanks to everyone who responded!

I gotten a Carver CM-1090 amplifier from a friend who has kept it in storage for decades. Opened it up, thick layer of dust cumulated everywhere. Vacuumed it semi-cleaned, and blown off as much as possible the remaining dust. This is a 220V version.

On initial powered up with nothing connected - it works with all the lights and button indicator lit up as pressed, etc. I then powered off, connected a CD player into the CD RCA input and powered it on. It seemed to work for a short while and when I turned the volume up and down to see the the VUs works, the power started to clicked off...

                          Hi everyone,

I require some help with my TV. The TV standby light blicks on and off with a clicking sound (relay?) from the back. After I opened up the TV, I set about troubleshooting by unplugging the boards to try and isolate the problem. My troubleshooting suggests that the logic board is causing the issue, but it could entirely be the YSUS board which is only activated once the logic board is connected.

I have recorded a video which I thought would be an easier way to explain the problem and show the boards at the same time.

I would like to try and identify...

                          Hello guys
Because the unit is old (but only occasionally used) the loudness button causes some noise due to bad contact,
sprays did not work, so i decided to solder the pins that it connects on the pcb at the on (loudness on) position
i did that and it worked fine, i know from the bottom of my heart that the switch connects 2 pins and also d/c other 2 pins
on every position it have (6 pin switch), so i was curious what would happen if i clicked the switch off while the pins are soldered at on (so basiclly on and off at the same time), when i did so the sound is gone, nothing...

                          Hello,
As a foreword I'm relatively novice with component level audio gear repair. My amplifier stopped producing sound and I currently have no funds to buy a new one so I need any help to repair it. I know "no sound" is one of the most common problem but there were other symptoms so some of you seasoned repairman might able to pinpoint the stuff I have to check. I did download the service manual from manualslib the "no sound checklist" is a bit intimidating.

So i bought it working. First symptom: speaker protection relays on the audio board were clicking...

Hi, I'm seeing one 9V relay having temperature 40C on its 9V (primary) side. Does that seem right? I switched 2 relays on that board and the temperature was the same (on the same position), so I'm sure it's not a faulty relay. I measured voltage on that relay and it was 9.5V DC, so that looks good. I don't see any other relay on that board having that kind of temperature and they have 9V on them too.
I thought maybe the transistor that is switching this relay keeps switching on/off, so I also checked for AC and there was almost none: 0.3V using mV range. No steady frequency was shown, but...
