    RCA L32WD12 Power Supply Problems

So, this is probably very similar to a number of threads regarding similar L##WD12 series RCA TVs with bum power supplies but I just want to confirm my initial diagnosis.

    What I know:
    - Pressing power button causes 1W SMPS relay to switch over, power LED blinks red.
    - 1W SMPS 5.3V standby voltage appears to be good, drops to zero though when relay clicks
    - Main PSU is getting AC when relay switches
    - Main PSU PS_ON rail is getting 3.13V, neither 5V or 24V rails are coming up though.
    - Applying 3.3V to PS_ON on the main SMPS does not cause the backlight or display to come on.
    - No caps on 1W or main SMPS board are bulged or deformed in any way. Murphy's law dictates that my LCR meter needs a new battery, and I don't have an ESR meter either.

What I think is the problem:
    - Could be the 1W SMPS output dropping when the mainboard tries to power up the main PSU, or it could be just an effect of it not having the main SMPS to back the 5V rail when it should.
    - Main SMPS more likely the problem, since it still should power up once you apply voltage to PS_ON.
    - Could potentially be either the 150uF 450V cap, or the +5V/+24V output caps that are bad since they're probably the most likely to be underspecced for ripple current/ESR. I have Digikey PN's for replacements with better specs than the SAMXON capacitors used but I'm holding off until I have a clearer idea if its the caps or not.

Now, I really hope it isn't another component buried in the SMPS since I only took this TV off a coworkers hands for free - he'd rather see it repaired and not landfilled. I'm only able to put so much time and money into it before I'll wash my hands of it as well though. Hoping the community here has some more specific thoughts.

Can you supply a picture of the 1W PSU.... I do not think it should drop when the relay clicks over.

So the initial diagnosis of 'output drops to zero' was somewhat incorrect. It appears to drop from 5.3V stable to around 2.8V (I had probed the wrong pins on the standby board). At the very least I'll be able to come up with appropriate part numbers for the caps on the 1W SMPS board, though will even the small ceramic HV caps require replacement?

Re: RCA L32WD12 Power Supply Problems

I'd replace all the electrolytics with the exception of the 400V one. Even 2.8V is much too low and could be causing issues.

Re: RCA L32WD12 Power Supply Problems

This is an FYI for anyone troubleshooting an RCA L32WD12:

My symptoms were as described: TV powers on (relay clicks) and after about 4 seconds, just as the picture is about to appear, the TV powers off (relay clicks again). The process repeats unattended until A) the TV locks up, powered on with noise on the screen or B) the faulty component warms up enough for the TV to remain on, usually after 3-5 minutes of unattended on/off/on power cycling.

Replacing CP616, plus the other electrolytic capacitors (CP611, CP613, CP614) on the SMPS 1 Watt board resolved this issue for me. I could have replaced just CP616 but none of the capacitors looked bad on this board. To make this a cost-effective repair, I replaced all for less than $5 (including shipping) from Digi-Key.

Also, capacitors on the SMPS Main power supply board (located in the lower right from the back) were bulging on the top. I replaced all caps in the 12 vdc (CS7, CS8, CS32) and 24 vdc section (CS2, CS3, CS43). Replacing these caps did NOT resolve the power on/off/on issue but they required replacement anyway.

Caps replaced on SMPS 1 Watt board

          CP616: 470 uf, 16v
          CP611: 47 uf 200v
          CP613: 22 uf 50v
          CP 614: 10 uf 63v

Caps replaced on SMPS Main power supply

          CS2, CS3, CS43: 1000 uf 35v
          CS7, CS8, CS32: 1000 uf 16v

Total repair cost: $12.61 (from Digi-Key, including shipping).

Thanks__budm--The problem was in the Main AMPS Board (12v Caps--cs7,cs8 cs32 ) & the ( 24v Caps--cs2, cs3, cs43 ) listed by JELittleton Above. After looking more closely at his
Listing of Schematics ( Approx 30 ) I found it. Since I had Drilled out some of the Apparently Plated-Through Holes--I needed to run wires back through the holes to complete the circuit--I am not a complete Novice , but almost missed this.___JCS8274

Re: RCA L32WD12 Power Supply Problems

                    Hello all,

A friend of mine gave me an RCA flat screen TV for parts but it looks
too good to scrap so am attempting to repair it. The model is L32WD12
and it looks like the power supply is bad. The standby supply seems OK
and the 12 and 24 volt outputs are pulsing up to about half voltage. I put a
load on the 12 volt output and the 12 volt bulb pulses as about twice a second
and the 24 volt part seems to be doing the same thing. I went over the board
with my VOM and could not find any parts that I could detect as defective. I
suspect faulty capacitors so am heading that way unless there is a better
path to follow. I'm wondering if there may be some way to diagnose this thing
using test points possibly. I know the supply is generating some high voltage
as the 400 volt electrolytic charges up nicely. I don't have much experience
with switching supplies so expect it will be a learning experience. I will be
doing some study on switching supplies but in the meantime would welcome
                    comments from the forum.

I'm new here but not new to electronics so am comfortable working with this unit
even though switching supplies are new to me.
