    Samsung UE46D8000

This set has a grey a horizontal shadowing across the top 4 or 5 inches of screen although the picture within this shadowing is perfect just greyed compared with the rest of the screen. It also switches off and back on again if switched to dynamic picture settings or on any other settings if a sudden high contrast scene. It also refuses to enter the service settings screen probably because of the contrast levels of service screen coming on for brief moment before switching off.
Does this sound like the dreaded D series panel failure??

    Re: Samsung UE46D8000

Have noticed now that the reason why the top of the screen is grey is because the back light as seen from the side of TV with frame off are noticeably dimmer in that area. I have also found out that by disconnecting the Tcon board the problem with the TV switching off and on in a cycle still continues. With both connectors from Tcon to panel disconnected the grey area with dimmer back light is still visible at top of screen. I have also found out that with picture settings set on dynamic without HDMI connected TV wont cycle off and on but as soon as HDMI connector is plugged in even with Tcon not connected off and on cycle restarts.
So it appears that the problem is a failing back light tripping out with the higher demands of dynamic settings and not as I first believed a faulty panel. Anybody else had failing back light problems like this with Samsund D series LED TV?

Plenty of backlight issues with these sets. Most often open LEDs but sometimes shorted ones too. D series is truly Samsung's worst.

Thanks for your feedback Tom. Would you consider it another non cost effective D series repair? Every D series TV I've had in before has been a faulty panel it now looks as if the back light is also going to produce problems in the future on this series. As you say the worst series ever

If it stays lit , it is probably not bulbs since most board will shut down when they have bulb issues.
if the darker area has a pretty crisp line at the change of brightness. then it is probably the panel.
If it is graduated darkness then it would be bulbs and could be fixed

It does shut down only to restart and shut down in a cycle but only on Dynamic settings. If its on standard picture settings the grey area can be seen at top of the screen. If it is the led back light is it a difficult repair?

can you post a post a picture of the effect ?
Do you notice if the dynamic increases the brightness ?

                Re: Samsung UE46D8000

Yes, I can post a picture later or tomorrow ( UK time ).
As regards to your question regarding brightness increase yes I can. When changed to Dynamic picture settings the picture increases in both brightness and contrast its then that the TV switches off. If its set for standard picture setting the picture is not so bright it doesn't switch off. Its then that the greyness can be seen at top of screen not unlike the anti glare coating at the top of a car windscreen.

When it shuts off do you get sound briefly for maybe a second or so, or does it cut out immediately?

                    Re: Samsung UE46D8000

The first thing to point out is that when it switches off it immediately restarts with the usual Samsung startup logo only to switch off again in that on and off cycle. As regards your question Tom it switches off so quickly that no sound has a chance to start. I am sorry to repeat this again but this happens only when dynamic picture settings are set.
When customer contacted me initially he said that TV was switching off and on all the time. When I checked it was indeed doing this. I discovered that the HDMI input he was using was set up with dynamic picture settings. I tried it on a different HDMI input and found that it worked and didnt switch off. The only difference was that the alternative HDMI input was set up as standard picture settings. I originally thought it might just be a faulty HDMI input but then I noticed the grey shadow at top of the screen. When I changed the standard picture setting back on that input to dynamic it immediately switched off then back on. It can quite easily be seen with the frame off that led light at the top of the frame is 50% less bright than the rest and this area coincides with the grey like shadow at top of screen.

Is there a "Cell Light" or "Backlight" option under one of the Standard or other picture modes? What happens if you change that?

full stop till you repair/replace led strips.
the one i did used 5630 smd leds.
i replaced ALL 200 of them.
the strips are fine now but it wounded the led driver section.will post what i find.
many cooked shorted leds in each string.

Ok altered the backlight setting from 20 on dynamic picture setting which is the maximum to 10. Reducing the backlight brightness has stopped the TV from switching off as it was. Whilst watching the picture I selected the backlight setting again and gradually increased the backlight again. It wasnt till it reached 20 again that it switched back off again. The shadow of course remains.

does the shadow get darker or travel further down the screen when you dim it ?
pictures would start to help, including a shot of the back which shows all the boards

The shadowed area gradually darkens but only in relation to the the rest of the screen and doesn't travel further down the screen as backlight is reduced to 1. To be honest it isn't very noticeable on backlight setting of 18. So unnoticeable I doubt if my customers would even notice it! Original fault was switching off and on in a cycle this isnt happening since the reduction in the backlight setting.
As regards pictures I am working on it!

@satinser I know this is an old post but hoping it's remembered. We are facing exact same issue on the same TV.

Did replacing the leds fix this or was it deemed unrepairable?
