    odd cap question

    I have a power board and the large capacitor is bad but it looks like the factory put some kind of shrink tube on it and I am unable to make out the size of the cap. I tried to cut it off but it is firmly attached to the plastic wrapper of the cap that has the size. I tried soaking in hot water and a heat gun and there is just no way that shrink tube will separate from the cap wrapper. Is there any way to find out the size? the board part number is 6693006602

    probably heatshrink sleeve lined with hotglue.

    you need a pair of oven-gloves.
    cut a slit down the sleeving,
    then heat it with a hair-dryer or hot-air station on high-air, low heat and unroll the sleeve.

      Tried something like that and it is firmly bonded every bit. Can't find any info on the board either.

        The heatshrink is sensitive to heat, it will contract when you apply heat.

        The only way to remove it is by using a sharp blade to slowly cut it away... cut a line through that material and then it should basically fall off, unless it's also glued to the capacitor.

          It's like melted together. It's off the cap now and I would gladly mail it to someone if they wanted to try.

            Is this the power supply? which cap is it? I found the schematic but there are no component values on it.

                For 150w, usually about 150-180uf is enough, so the capacitor is probably around this value, rated for 420-450v (if they made the power supply universal, to work in Europe as well).

                It doesn't look like it has active pfc, so considering you're in US you can probably go with a 250v rated capacitor and put there as much capacitance as it fits in that diameter size (just look on Digikey at diameters and heights)
