Variac Transformers and switch mode power supplies.

    Hello everyone,

I was wondering if anyone in the forum can tell me how they use the variac transformer to check a switch mode power supply that they had just repaired.
I wanted to know how they adjust the votlage, do they start from zero and turn it up slowly or rather switch on that about 60V ac ( My country we use 220V ac) and hope for the best.
Also what sounds the PSU should make, what sounds wrong etc. Also if i have a scope what can i check for.
The reason why i am asking is i have a Sony LED TV PSU whose PFC circuit shorted out and upon closer inspection a lot of SMD components had failed.
I have a donor board to cannibalise but i only have one shot at it.
    Hope you understand my dilemma.

    Regards

I would suggest you not play around with something like this until you understand more fully what it is you are doing.
YouTube video, repair manuals and instruction manuals will be your best bet.

Off the top of my head, without seeing your setup, i think what you need is a Step Down Transformer (220v To 110v) in conjunction with a DIY Light bulb current limiter to test the SMPS.
AGAIN... please dont do anything unless you actually know what you are doing here as you can cause serious harm or injury to yourself and/or other people/property.

      Hi KYBOSH,
How am i doing it wrong?
There are no schematics on this model. Sony made sure of it.
I have a 500VA isolation transformer for my protection and as for the power supply, it was blown up to begin with.
I simply need to understand the basics of how you ramp up the ac input on the switch mode power supply.
The PFC circuit was damaged. This included the mosfet, driver ic and a few smd components in between.
This power supply is avaialble on ebay or aliexpress as a second hand but they are mad with their price. I have all the time to fix it but i only have one try.
Can you explain to me? I am technical, i have been doing this job since 1996 but i came across this variac and want to use it.
I used the light bulb method in the past where i insert a light bulb on the ac input to prevent surges but that does not prevent the failure on the PSU.
Can you help, Do you know of a youtube video that talks about it?

      Regards

I know that SMPS power supplies don't like a low AC input as they can draw a lot of current at startup. But what else can i do? Just give 230V AC and hope for the best?

Just an update, So I took your advice KYBOSH and I did not use the Variac. I instead opted to use a couple of incandescent light bulbs in series with the mains fuse to see what the current draw is initially and it seemed fine.
The tv works fine, thanks for your help.
Quite few parts replaced in this Sony KLV-32T400A power supply, Most damage was done to the PFC circuit.
I have added the pictures or your interest.

          Regards

Vizio e601i-A3 - Has Sound and Display, But No Backlight - Bad Power Supply Board or Bad LED Bulbs ?
              by Tynan Dill
I was given this TV from my great uncle. He said it just wouldn't turn on one day out of nowhere, replaced the TV, and gave it to me to possibly fix and use for myself.

Upon bringing it home and plugging it up, it showed a standby light.

I powered it on and without a flashlight, the display showed the "V" but the lighting is very dim, but visible.

The screen seems to blackout and stay black, but with a flashlight I can see the display.

With my Playstation 4 connected via HDMI, and running a game I can hear sound.

              Assuming...

Hi Everyone. First official post so fingers crossed I conform and also manage to get photos to work.

So I am requesting some help from anyone who happens to have one of these motherboards to hand and perhaps a multimeter.

My board has a single row of header pins for all the front panel stuff (have seen others where they are grouped together differently so thats no help) and the two pins for the power on switch had been previously repaired and I am trying to make a better repair. There looks to be pad and trace damage and im happy to relocate the header pin/pins to...

NEC TurboExpress On/Off Power Switch Replacement Help
              by grimacelord
              Hello,

I've been working on a NEC TurboExpress and I accidentally got the plastic inside the power ON/OFF switch too hot while doing other repairs and melted it. At first, it would still power on when sliding the switch, but you had to really press inward while sliding to get it to work.

I removed the switch component and tried to gently melt the plastic back so it would work more reliably and all I managed to do was make it worse.

I need to find a replacement On/OFF switch for this, but having some trouble figuring out which kind of switch I need....

Vintage AT Power Supplies - Selecting Capacitors
              by iMic
              Hi,

Back after a long hiatus with some old power supplies that need repairing. I've recently picked up a couple of 386SX systems, two 486DX systems, a SiliconGraphics Indy and an iMac G3 that either have verified leaking capacitors in their power supplies, or are likely to in the near future. For the sake of simplicity, instead of tackling all at once, I'm starting with the 386's and one of the 486's.

The 386's power supplies are Seasonic SS4040A's, with caps that are visibly leaking, and 9 replacement caps per unit are required. Most appear to be from the Rubycon...

Microsoft Surface Pro (5th gen) model 1796 - no power
              by PantherDave
              Hi all!

I'm trying to troubleshoot a Microsoft Surface Pro (5th gen) model 1796 that won't power on. Motherboard model is M1007506-015. My priority is retrieving data, but the SSD is integrated so it looks like if I can't repair it it'll need to go to a data recovery company. I've done a little basic board repair before, but nothing this advanced until now. So please forgive my ignorance in advance. 😅

I found the boardview for this laptop in the forums here, and am able to open it on my PC with FlexBV.
