  • IBM NetVista Pentium III - USI Motherboard w/ Teapo SC

    Hi folks,

I have a couple of IBM NetVista desktop computers from around 2000-2001. They have Universal Scientific Industrial (USI) Pro286i motherboards, 733MHz Pentium III processors, and a whole bunch of bad Teapo capacitors. One board has visibly bad and venting capacitors, while the other doesn't look too bad so far.

The board with venting caps works fine, while the good looking board occasionally refuses to power on unless it's left for about 30 seconds after connecting the power - even with a known good power supply. (I am however aware I'll need to check the PSU...

  • Re: Vintage AT Power Supplies - Selecting Capacitors

Cheers for the advice. I opened the second 386 power supply and saw it used Panasonic caps across the board, so figured based on looking at the two that Panasonic FC's were probably a safe bet.

The ASTEC I'd planned to go a mix of UCC and Nichicon, but none of the recommended equivalents were available - different specs were either "on order" or "end of life" at Element14 and Mouser. Given the UCC LXZ series would cover for the LXF, Panasonic FC is approximately equivalent to the LXZ, and the FCs...

They are - I haven't inspected mine yet, but these machines came in a lot of 7, five of which went off to different owners. Of the other 5, all of them had considerable leakage from the bottom of the caps, so I fully expect to see the same on these two.

I'll have a look at the Nichicon and Rubycon equivalents too. I don't mind spending a bit extra to get a better cap, as long as I can actually source them and they're correct for this application. Would also like to stick to one or two manufacturer...

  • Vintage AT Power Supplies - Selecting Capacitors

    Hi,

Back after a long hiatus with some old power supplies that need repairing. I've recently picked up a couple of 386SX systems, two 486DX systems, a SiliconGraphics Indy and an iMac G3 that either have verified leaking capacitors in their power supplies, or are likely to in the near future. For the sake of simplicity, instead of tackling all at once, I'm starting with the 386's and one of the 486's.

The 386's power supplies are Seasonic SS4040A's, with caps that are visibly leaking, and 9 replacement caps per unit are required. Most appear to be from the Rubycon...

"Idiots"? I assembled and submitted this information across a couple of forums, and one didn't support local attachments. The content was directly copied across, hence the externally linked images. It's possible I was either sidetracked or forgot to update them to attachments as time went on.

    Just wanted to address that.

@Flit - Thankfully I have those images archived. They're actually still online as well, the issue is the host domain changed...

  • Re: MacBook Pro (17-inch Mid 2009) 820-2610 MLB Repair

Only recently managed to compile OpenBoardView on OS X. Still needs some refinement on an OS X host but it already works a lot better than Landrex Test Link does. Looking forward to seeing what can be done with it as new features are added.

Currently working on sourcing schematics and board views for other boards as well. Starting to build a reasonable collection of them so if you're after any others, throw me a board number (820-****) and I'll see if I can track it down. Probably better to PM as I'll...

Eventually did manage to track down the necessary schematics and board view files for this model. I've attached them here in case we want to add them to the collective community archive of notebook schematics....

  • Re: MacBook Pro (17-inch Mid 2009) 820-2610 MLB Repair

Started the machine yesterday afternoon and she ticked over without a hitch.

I have seen issues before where the alcohol cleaning solvent hadn't fully evaporated from the board causing some anomalies, so I wonder if that was the case here. Been running for about 9 hours stable now including an Apple Service Diagnostic EFI / OS stress test, so it now looks rather promising for this board.

I have heard these machines can have some issues with the EFI ROM / BIOS. The...

  • MacBook Pro (17-inch Mid 2009) 820-2610 MLB Repair

I've recently come across a MacBook Pro (17-inch Mid 2009) in almost pristine condition. The machine owes me nothing so far, but considering its condition, build quality and that incredible 17-inch screen I would like to see what can be done with it.

It didn't power on. The machine did start for a while, but only if I disconnected some auxiliary components to reduce the current draw on the Logic Board. The LED on the front illuminates for a second, then the machine clicks off. Sometimes it will make it half way through boot and then suddenly shut off. In the rare occasion the machine...

  • Re: Apple II Europlus Power Supply Failure (ASTEC AA11042C)

I decided to perform a more extensive overhaul of the PSU and Floppy Drive recently. I had a small mishap that involved connecting the floppy drive to the Disk II controller card one row of pins over. Toasted the drive, and the PSU hadn't sounded right ever since. It was hissing while running, and the noise would become louder with additional load.

The toasted component inside the drive was the 74LS125 Bus Buffer IC, apparently a common failure when mis-connecting the drive like this.

    ...

  • Re: Macintosh Colour Classic - Trinitron Convergence and Geometry

Replaced the damaged resistor and the affected capacitor, and she's off and running again. Still have to recap the rest of the board, but good to see it working. I managed to repair the lifted solder pad, so the repair went fairly smoothly.

The Logic Board didn't fare as well. Those capacitors had been leaking before, and a couple of the solder pads were corroded to hell. Lifted straight off as soon as I touched them. The lifted traces were only connected to ground, so I was able to connect them still...

  • Re: Macintosh Colour Classic - Trinitron Convergence and Geometry

Once I took the board out of the machine and just touched the burned resistor at RF11, the solder joint gave out underneath it. It would have been holding on by a thread. While it previously worked, it's now reading open circuit across the resistor, so it's well and truly toast.

In addition to a severely degraded capacitor, I tend to agree that it's remarkable the display worked at all.

The board itself is a rather simple construction, so cleaning up the damage to the PCB was easy. I may...

  • Re: Mitsubishi Magna TR/TS / Verada KR/KS Engine & Transmission Controllers

I thought I'd show everyone what happens to a Magna TCU when the capacitors leak over time.

I was planning to replace these capacitors in this unit, but the electrolyte has completely eaten through the traces on the board. That's the worst part about this type of failure. There are no prior symptoms. Once the transmission starts behaving erratically, chances are the board is already damaged. If it reaches the point where the smell of electrical smoke is...

  • Re: Macintosh Colour Classic - Trinitron Convergence and Geometry

It's been over a year since I first posted this. Life happens, and this project was shelved for some time, but I finally discovered what the source of the problem was.

That short capacitor has a temperature rating of 85c, yet it's situated in one of the hottest parts of the Analog Board, between two resistors that clearly run rather hot and a zener diode. One solder joint connecting one of the two burned resistors to the board has been completely destroyed by the leaking electrolyte....

  • Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

This month's haul is three Power Mac G5s.

The first is a Single 1.8GHz machine. No power supply sadly, so I can't start it up. May consider modding an ATX for this one since it only requires a 430W supply.

The second is a Quad 2.5GHz Liquid Cooled system. This one works, and after reseating the processor modules it seems to be working quite nicely at that. It has a Delphi / Cooligy system in it, and it passed an inspection for leaks. I'll keep an eye on it, but it looks like we have a good one. The PSU is an absolute monster...

  • Re: Rescue MacBook Pro with Damaged LVDS

The pads are still on the Logic Board, but the pins are missing from the connector. Even if I were to solder a wire to where the pads on the board trace back to, I couldn't solder it to the connector block.

So, I'll have to replace the connector itself.

Since the pins on the connector match up directly with the pad below, wouldn't it simply be a case of removing the old connector and soldering down a replacement connector? I'm not sure why schematics are required since it's just a replacement of that connector, unless...

  • Rescue MacBook Pro with Damaged LVDS

    Hi everyone.

I've had a MacBook Pro stored away for a while now - a Late 2011 model with a Core i7 Quad 2.4GHz. The previous owner spilled a glass of red wine over it, and thankfully I was able to get in there very shortly after it happened and rescue most of the machine. I've repaired the Backlit Keyboard, pulled from another scrap unit, and the Logic Board mostly works apart from some damage to the LVDS connector (on an external display, it works perfectly).

The 4 pins to the far left of the connector were corroded and are missing. Those...

  • Macintosh Colour Classic - Trinitron Convergence and Geometry

After about a decade of searching, I finally found and bought a Macintosh Colour Classic. In comparison to other Colour Classics on the market, this one was a bargain in every sense of the word, only $50 AUD. I don't specifically make a case of finding inanimate objects adorable, but this comes fairly close.

The significant reduction in the price is due to the amount of wear and tear this machine has. Two plastic tabs on the internal chassis were snapped off, the front bezel had a small stress fracture on the inside, the outside was covered in permanent marker, the Floppy...
