    voltage reading on heat sinks

may be a dumb question, but am supposed to have any voltage on my heat sinks or could that be a bad transistor?

Re: voltage reading on heat sinks

Depends on where they are. I think you're likely to find some in the primary that are hot.

Re: voltage reading on heat sinks

That's pretty normal, although I was repairing one power supply and I damaged the mica insulator while repairing it, the effect was that I had drain shorted to the heatsink and the heatsink was already tied to the source/ground, naturally this did make a nice fuse pop!

Have you seen the message "Test before touching" with regard to heatsinks being live?
My first choice in quality Japanese electrolytics is Nippon Chemi-Con, which has been in business since 1931... the quality of electronics is dependent on the quality of the electrolytics.

He means put a meter on it like you would anything else to test for voltage BEFORE you touch it with your hands.

                  A2141 PP3v3_G3H_RTC_X Diode Reading .104V Voltage 3.39V
                  by abajor
Have an A2141 which is reading about 5.2V 0.07A on all USB jacks, started doing the measurements.

                  PPBUS_3GH diode: measures good .45V
PPBUS_3GH Voltage: maybe not so good 12.25V maybe bad T2? Unit did not come up in DFU on configurator.

                  The weird so far is
                  PP3v3_G3H_RTC_X diode: .104V (WTF?)
                  PP3v3_G3H_RTC_X voltage: 3.39V (Normal)

Stopped there attempted reverse voltage injection at PP3v3_G3H_RTC_X with 1V. Instead of the circuit sinking any current, My PSU suddenly reads 3.4V with no current draw.
Not sure what any of this means...

Solder joints on heat sinks matter?
                  by jm1234
                  Hi,
solder joints on heat sinks - how much do they matter? Could poor joints on heat sink cause issues if they are not properly joining to hot ground?
I'm looking at power source module of Panasonic plasma TV and I see many of these having visually poor quality, but could they matter? In general I would guess no, but I saw a video where someone was stressing out the importance of tightening the screws when fastening the power source board specifically for the ground to be connected properly.
                  Thanks

Vizio e601i-A3 - Has Sound and Display, But No Backlight - Bad Power Supply Board or Bad LED Bulbs ?
                  by Tynan Dill
I was given this TV from my great uncle. He said it just wouldn't turn on one day out of nowhere, replaced the TV, and gave it to me to possibly fix and use for myself.

Upon bringing it home and plugging it up, it showed a standby light.

I powered it on and without a flashlight, the display showed the "V" but the lighting is very dim, but visible.

The screen seems to blackout and stay black, but with a flashlight I can see the display.

With my Playstation 4 connected via HDMI, and running a game I can hear sound.

                  Assuming...

MOSFET? Is its voltage reading normal?
                  by alro7779
                  Hello, guys!
Got this 8-pin MOSFET (I presume) on the motherboard that I'm still trying to repair (HP Stream 11-ah117wm DAY0HGMB6C1 REV:C), close to the DC IN connector, and when I read voltage on Drain (5-8 pins) and Source (1-3 pins), I got the 19.81 VDC of the DC IN on each, but on the Gate (pin 4) it's 25 VDC. Is it normal? Now, I'm not quite sure the component is a MOSFET, but it looks like, and since it has the printed code on it totally unreadable, I can't try to find the datasheet. Can anyone give me a hand on this? Or maybe ff there's some MOSFET tutorial or something that you can...
