She used Chongs, and it got more amusing when I compared what she'd used against the schematic. The values were fairly random. For example a 4700 where the schematic specified a 1500, and a 25V instead of a 35V. At first I assumed she must have bought a kit, but it looks llke she just went "Right, so I need a big one, two smaller ones and then a really little one". Or maybe she typed in Samsung TV repair kit and got one for a 32" LCD or something. ???

To her credit she did at least manage to put them in the right way round.

To update, I've think I've actually managed to get the PSU working! The regulator for the 18V_Amp is shorted which is what was making all the heat. By jumpering PS_ON and VS_ON I managed to get Vs voltage up. Now I've just got to find out why the logic board isn't giving the VS_ON signal itself. Hope the lady hasn't fried it.

Damn, that's rough! But you got a single-layer board, thick traces.. easy fix.

Problem with the internet, every man and his dog with a computer has likely heard stories of "them darn capacitors" and can buy an 80 watt (bigger is better, right?) soldering iron from the local hardware store for $5.

Still, hopefully some of these people will learn something....

                Problem

This is an LG edge LED lit LCD Display. The LEDs are on the bottom edge of the display. There are 2 bars (left and right) Each bar has many LEDs and a 6 pin connector. Each pin drive several LEDs thus is the highest current flow / heat junction. The weak lead free solder gradually fails with thermal expansion/contraction cycling and increases resistance. PSU will compensate up to a point, then when the current is too high, PSU just shut down the backlight causing a dark display. I have even seen one which the connector just fell off as solder points became completely detached....

                SMD fuse soldering advice please
                by Ady2017
Hi all. I need to replace an SMD fuse on my camcorder and this is the first time I have had to do any SMD soldering so your advice would be appreciated. Below is a picture of the board that I am working on and I have highlighted the fuse that needs to be replaced. I managed to zoom in to take this picture but the fuse is really tiny and is sandwiched between other components so this is going to be a new milestone for me. I appreciate that I am going to have to buy a new soldering iron if you could advice on what I need please. I was thinking about putting a big soldering iron across the whole...

Elitebook 840 G5 Bios Chip Soldering Question
                by Azurain
                Hi everyone,

I have an HP Elitebook 840 G5 that I am trying to get working again. I've removed the front bios chip (the 32mb one) and have run it through HP unlocker already. I've uploaded and verified the new bin, but am now experiencing an issue that has led me to believe I've been soldering the chip back to the motherboard incorrectly.

Essentially, after re-soldering the chip back into its place and reassembling the laptop, the charging light immediately flashes orange and white and then shifts to a solid white. The capslock and numlock lights blink seven times...

Yihua 992DA+ Hot air gun and soldering rework station, burnt mark
                by Peter_1402
                Hi Everyone,
I bought a Yihua 992DA+ hot air gun and soldering iron unit from a used market.
                1. Soldering iron works great
                2. There is a burnt mark on the hot air gun handle.
I am a bit concern by the look of the melted plastic. I opened the hot air gun handle and took some readings with a multimeter.
Heating element ~ 75ohm. (Similar reading taken from a spare heating element that came with the unit.)
Thermocouple ~ 1.5ohm. (Similar reading from the spare heating element.)
Reed switch tested ok with a magnet.
From the above test, I can conclude...
