I think I just lost a laptop and a TV to a bad HDMI cable.

So, earlier today I had a perfectly running laptop and 55" Hitachi TV. I decided to hook up a 4x1 HDMI switch because my TV only had 1 HDMI input. I hooked it up with known working HDMI cables, but I didn't get any signal. I sat down to do some research and a few minutes later I heard a POP and HISS from the 4x1 switch. I quickly unplugged it, and realized I had put a 12v power supply on the switch when it only required 5v .

I then plugged my TV back into the cable box like it was originally hooked up, through the HDMI cable that once worked. NO SIGNAL. Thinking it could be the cable box that was not working, I then hooked the HDMI cable into my laptop. The instant the cable went in the HDMI port, the laptop shut off and now it won't come back on. The TV does power on, and gives an on screen display, but will not receive a HDMI signal. It also will not tune into antenna channels either, I just get a black screen.

I assume it's a mainboard problem with the TV, right? Have anyone ever experienced something like this before?

TL;DR: I overvolted an HDMI switch on accident, and it fried my HDMI cable/the TV's main board. Not knowing this, I plugged the HDMI cord into a laptop, and it killed that too. Crappy day it's been

typically, the HDMI switch will suck power from the source, which should feed 5V at up to 50mA through a diode. It's possible that the switch just connects this to 12V, so you could have caused the 5V supply in the TV to fail and shoot up to a higher voltage.

After possibly destroying the mainboard with the faulty switch, is it possible said mainboard would then cause a laptop to fail catastrophically when connected to the TV via HDMI (switch is out of the picture at this point)?

That's possible but I think it is reasonably unlikely, I would check other things on the laptop, remove battery and unplug AC, then try again.

I wish it was that easy. I took the battery out over night, and the CMOS too. No results. Time for a new mainboard and motherboard I guess.

Well I am spreading a rumour that hdmi is not plug and play and all machines should be switched off /unplugged connected then switched on again.
Having seen many cases of hdmi killing boards I have told my family and friends
            not to do it.
Too late for you, sorry, but others might read this and save their sets.
Maybe you can start a thread for laptop on laptop forum post good clear pictures of the board make model number and NAME of board. Close up of hdmi area.

I dont like HDMI for this very reason. Not had any issues Personally, but seen the results and heard the sad tales of problems--Often kids and Playstations/X-Boxes come to mind....
(Never owned either--and dont ever plan to!)

At least with SCART (Peritel) the reported incidents of problems were much less--even though the resolution/quality isnt quite the same!

Yup, all I get is a flash from the power LED every once in a while.

Will do as soon as I get the laptop broken down. I will also post a pic of the mainboard in this thread as soon as I get this insanely heavy TV off the wall.

Although I don't plan on doing it again, I have been haphazardly plugging/unplugging HDMI ever since my first HDTV with no problems. I think it was carelessness with the 4x1 switch that caused this whole problem.

I just ran into a small problem... I was about to buy a replacement Sub Digital PWB, part numberJP50322 (which I have been calling the mainboard in this thread) but noticed it does not contain the HDMI ports. The HDMI ports are actually on the C Main Digital board, part number JP50763.

Do you think I need both boards? The TV is a Hitachi 55HDT79

                        Micro Momentary Push Switch?

Great to be here! I'm a newbie here trying to find a "micro", momentary push switch to repair a Sony "clamshell" video walkman. This micro switch has long since discontinued by Sony, however I hope there are third-party switches of the same size and functionality that I might be able to source to play the same role. The purpose of this switch is to tell the video walkman that the user has activated the mechanical tape eject button, turning that physical action into an electronic signal that tells the tape transport mechanism to open so one can load or eject a video tape. I...

NEC TurboExpress On/Off Power Switch Replacement Help
                        by grimacelord
                        Hello,

I've been working on a NEC TurboExpress and I accidentally got the plastic inside the power ON/OFF switch too hot while doing other repairs and melted it. At first, it would still power on when sliding the switch, but you had to really press inward while sliding to get it to work.

I removed the switch component and tried to gently melt the plastic back so it would work more reliably and all I managed to do was make it worse.

I need to find a replacement On/OFF switch for this, but having some trouble figuring out which kind of switch I need....

I have a very small float switch, I'm using in a very small tank. It only fits in one way. Link https://www.amazon.com/uxcell-Switch.../dp/B07DZ1J2GB

I want the switch to be open when the water is high, and closed when the water is low. Unfortunately it works the opposite. And since this switch is designed to be underwater, it's all sealed up, there is no taking it apart or hacking it up.

It will be driving a water pump, basic idea, when the water is low, switch closes, which turns on water pump, when enough water is in the tank, float switch floats,...
