EDIT: I see now that this is a "flexgate" issue. One of the backlight cables is almost torn. Is the touch bar problem related to the screen?
Hi, sorry I can't find board number (where is it printed?)
This machine will turn on (CPU gets warm, caps lock lights up, touchpad clicks, you can hear charging "chime" when plugged in) but the screen and touchbar remain black. No image and no backlight. The fans also don't turn on, but maybe because CPU isn't hot enough...
It appears it has been dropped on the corners before.
Although...

Re: HP Pavilion 17F - No internal display, but external works.
My mistake, I stated the pin number incorrectly in the other post.
I should have said 0v on 39 and 40.
19v are on pin 1 and 2.
Pin 39 and 40 come from RTD2136R which has low input and no 3.3v output....Last edited by mattpd; 05-21-2020, 02:40 PM.

HP Pavilion 17F - No internal display, but external works.
Board DAY11AMB6E0 REV E - https://www.badcaps.net/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=141261&d=1474124578
Known good LVDS cable and LCD screen.
Laptop works fine with HDMI connected.
LCD is controlled by Realtek RTD2136R (page 23)
Pin 5, 18, and 22 should have 3.3v input but actual voltage is around 2v.
The schematics call these 3.3v rails "+3.3V_2136_A" and "+3.3V_2136_D"
The bottom of page 23 says these rails originate from a rail called "+3v" which isn't very...

820-00840 Turns on slowly and wont boot from SSD or USB
Came in with small liquid damage on U3200 and U8210.
Cleaned up U8210 and verified it's outputs.
Flowed some flux under U3200 and ultrasonic.
Machine turns on with power button or by plugging in USB-C and fans spin, but screen remains off.
After about 30 seconds screen comes on and ? folder blinks with customers SSD installed.
Tried 3 known good USB installers. All of them will give Apple logo, but then locks up forever and never boots.
Also no WiFi networks show up when attempting internet recovery/diagnostic...

Re: Surface Pro 4 - UEFI password removal please?
YES! Thank you.
Touch works, starts up fast, and no more BIOS password.
Can you tell me how you did it?
EDIT: I ran it though hex compare. The only difference between the two files are a single character at offset 00606620. Is that all it takes?...Last edited by mattpd; 02-21-2020, 12:42 PM.

Re: Surface Pro 4 - UEFI password removal please?
No, it's still locked.
I have a clean ME dump for this BIOS. Would that help?
I can't use the clean ME BIOS directly though, because it makes the touch screen stop working. There must be something in the original BIOS that allows touch to function... I somehow need to combine them I think....

Surface Pro 4 - UEFI password removal please?
Could someone remove the password from this dump?
Also, if you have time can you point me to any resources that I can learn to do it myself?Last edited by SMDFlea; 03-25-2023, 06:39 AM.

Reflashed Surface Pro 4 BIOS to remove UEFI password. Now it boots SLOW
I have a Surface Pro 4 that was UEFI locked.
It worked normally, but you just couldn't get into BIOS without a password.
I stole the BIOS from another identical board and flashed it. I didn't edit the BIOS at all.
Now when I turn it on it takes 30 seconds to get Surface logo (before I flashed it took 1 second)
Then it takes about 15 seconds before you get the Windows 10 spinning dots. (normally it's almost immediate)
Once it's booted...

Re: Surface Pro 4 dead - Main 8.5v power rail is 2v - Have good board to compare
Will do, but I am pretty confident on this one.
The reason I reflowed in the first place is because I had another bad board here that has CPU problems, but was at least able to bring up all it's main power rails. I decided to remove the EC from the board to see what would happen. The results were the exact same as the board I was working on, 8.5v rail dropped to 2.5v....

Re: Surface Pro 4 dead - Main 8.5v power rail is 2v - Have good board to compare
I see what's causing the 15v gate now.
The component labeled "DP" has something to do with controlling the gate.
The top center pin should have 3.3v. It is 0v on bad board.
If I inject 3.3v onto this pin, the gate drops to the normal 5v, and the FET opens. But still no main 8.5v power rail coming up.
So my guess is that 3.3v is missing elsewhere on the board too. I can measure 3.3v elsewhere on the board though, so the rail isn't...

Re: Surface Pro 4 dead - Main 8.5v power rail is 2v - Have good board to compare
No shorts or low resistance on those FETS and the bad board does not work with battery.
Thanks for the PDF. I checked VCC and it's around 1.8v. Good board has 15v adapter voltage at VCC.
This caused me to look elsewhere on the board to try to figure out why the 15v adapter voltage wasn't making it to the charger IC. I assume that they should almost be directly connected...
So I found two more FETS that were under a shield that I had ignored earlier....
