The way that it fades like a black cloud makes me think its the panel.

That's exactly in the middle, probably points to a T-con issue and for $20, worth a punt.

Ive had a few sets with exactly that fading symptom. Turns out the tab-bonds were the problem with them.

Made the usual temporary repair with foam-tape which have survived months now.

One however, refused to be fixed!

Looks like panel to me. $20 might be worth it for the parts though.

The main board for this model TV looks similar to the Westinghouse LD-4655VX, which is known for having a shorted out LED ribbon cables. This TV seem to have LED back-light out along with a possible bad ribbon cable for the LCD screen or the panel is bad.

It's the panel IMO. Not backlights. If backlights were bad it wouldn't be a sudden cut off. $20 though does get you a good main board hopefully.

well I just picked up the TV. The guy had it on a wall mount he said and he took it off the wall mounts put it back on The stand and he could not find the original stand screws so he went down to the local hardware store and bought some really long threaded screws and he ran them through the TV on the bottom I think he probably hit a ribbon cable.

Ok here's what I found. sure enough the screws protruded through the ribbon cables from the tcon to the screen. Whats interesting is that I had an old t-con board from a Samsung that the spacing in size was correct so I swapped the cables Beautiful picture now.

this Westinghouse has a sharp panel in it and Samsung ribbon cables work worked. They were a little longer but I improvised.

Lol thanks. I'm surprised it didn't short the panel or the tcon. IT has a decent picture but I'm not very impressed. The contrasts are over saturated. Seems to be an LED thing. The sharp 80 inch is that way a little as well. Whites are blue and the menus are very basic. Cannot compensate for the LED white balance.

do the LED backlight cables run inside the LCD screen?

I hope this model doesn't share the same common failure like the LD-4655VX. The LED backlight cable short out to the metal bar of the LED stripe due too heat.
