    Testing LED TV Mainboard without SMPS

    Hello Community,

    I've been looking at the TV160 mainboard tester for LED/LCD screens and wondered if there was a device for providing the required voltage to test a TV mainboard using the TV160 without the SMPS.

    Doing so may allow me to work on the main board away for the larger unit with the panel and SMPS

    bump 😎, still looking for a way to power any mainboard that test it works by outputting display to a TV160 (mainboard tester), without the use of a SMPS--Essentially freeing myself form being next to the panel and SMPS, while repairing mainboards

      Hi, there's not much to know, today's mainb. have one or two supply tensions, the lower is 5v, the higher is 12/16v, some others have 5/12/24, very few have 3,3v, so this means you.80% of the times can drive all things with a common ATX PSU, an old 200w does the job, for.the 24v them are for sound you can avoid them, but not in oled sets..

        Hey Davi,

        Thanks for the tip. Btw, will I need to solder output wires from the ATX to the 5v and 12v lines on the mainboad? or is it possible to interface a powersupply directly onto the mainboard connector that usually goes to the SMPS?

        As for Oled do you mean I should avoid this method (powering mainboard without SMPS)?

        I've been thinking about this item on Ali, seems to even offer 24v, what do you think?

          1) remove the correct wires from the normal tv cable by sliding them out the connector using miniature flat screw screwdriver, then cut the normal molex pc connector from the atx and put both atx and tv cables into a screw mammuth connector
          2) sorry, my mistake, also on oled tv the 24v on the MB is for only audio, you can avoid

            TV mainboards wasn't a Radio or simple device / machine to fed it with DC and it will work,
            TVs depending on many sectors one of them AC DETCT , and it sync Return from PSU, also the Firmware script Timing., in time you are thinking you are testing boards... but you are going to killing the boards.
            scripts found in SPI / NOR / eMMC not for cosmetic to show logo or play start sound.. its send IO to turn on and Off exact circuits depending on Timing and steps.

            Mainboards Testing only at own TV PSU., if yours PSU working... so why we need external to testing..?? Chinese simple boards where the LVDS just wires not Ribbon or flat LVDS will not work on modern TVs.
            Modern TVs Mainboards each brands had base station where we can install the MB on it to do test fed firmware and execute scripts for calibration / Testing / diagnose / repair

              HI Diah,

              Thanks for joining and sharing your knowledge. I've also got a few faulty mainboards and would like to have a go repairing them. In the absence of the original panels and SMPSs, I wondered if there was a way to test them using a portable power supply and a TV160 for a display? I'm hoping the get better at voltage checks, Nor, Nand, emmc, boot loader and firmware updates using programmer and fly wires etc

                  this is swimming in ocean , no end no result... you have defects MB... but did you know whet are the issue... each issue had it own check process... checking volts need service manual to know on which parts you are testing.. ATX we can use only to for testing DC to DC circuits on MB... but is this all you have on MB..? as oi wrote before many include MICOM are depending on IO and this parts with out it yours time and offered like the ocean swimming.

                    Have you got an atx supply? Post a main board example, let we see how to do.. try.at.least, not.much time takes this effort

                      Fair enough, I'm going to test the waters. Hopefully I'll learn something by messing aorund with the boards--nothing to loose but some time

                            i appreciate the effort but these photos are totally waste of space and time, you need to photograph the power supply board silkscreens of signals, so you know which tensions the board needs, you don't have those boards probably but need to search their photos by the web or get manuals..
