    Kenwood question

I know it's not a TV, not even a monitor, but here are the most experts when it comes to LCDs.
I have picked up this unit with supposedly an intermittent screen issue.
What do think, this is a video signal issue, or an LCD issue?
Here is a link with the unit:

    Re: Kenwood question

I think you need to say what the screen does/doesnt do when it goes from OK to fault.
Please upload pictures using attachment function when ask for help on the repair

      Re: Kenwood question

Most likely a fault with the LCD. I would replace the LCD module, for that size it shouldn't be too expensive and hopefully is a common part.

        Re: Kenwood question

I haven't seen an image yet.
I have contacted him, and he said that I should way a while and then the menu should appear.
        An LCD is like $200.
Which module you are referring too? Video chip?
I had previously owned an older Kenwood nav. unit, which it showed this screen a couple of times and by cleaning a connector which connected the LCD with the PCB, fixed the issue.
I was hoping that this would be the case here too and I will make an easy money.
You guys are thinking that it would be something on the PCB and not the LCD itself?
I see some kind of pressure mark, by the volume button too.

Sorry - failed to see the second pic on ebay.
I suppose if it was a monitor that came on eventually we would suggest
a, cleaning the leads - done?
b, heating with a hair dryer?
          c, testing voltage regulators?

            Re: Kenwood question

I have cleaned all the ribbon cables and connectors, there are a couple. Did not help.
I will have to do the other two.
What do you think I should try heating? Video IC?

              Re: Kenwood question

Kenwood may sell LCD for $200, but I think you could figure out who made it and order the generic version directly, unlikely that Kenwood have specifically engineered it.

                Re: Kenwood question

I was thinking of looking into it, they are cheap Chinese CLAAxx something, I'm not home now.
The question is, it's the LCD or not?
                Here is a similar one:
                http://www.ebay.com/itm/Kenwood-Ddx4...item27de16155b
Found this LCD on Ebay, but I'm not sire if it's the right one though:
                http://www.ebay.com/itm/Original-6-1...item3cd2919842
                It's half the price.

                  Re: Kenwood question

The unit itself, it seems like it's working, the button lights are changing colors, I have ejected a CD which it was in the unit.
I'm thinking of hooking up the unit to a TV using RCA outputs, to see if everything else it's working.
This is almost as a laptop with a graphics card issue. But very well could be a cheap Chungwa screen. It could be the screen's T-con having problem? I guess, that one is build into the top board of the LCD, which is covered with that aluminum foil, no?

                    Re: Kenwood question

I doubt there's a t-con in these screens, it will all be chip on glass technology. i.e. replace the screen as a module, if bad.
Cheap Chungwha doesn't matter for small LCD. It's bigger LCDs where pic quality and reliability become more important.

Well as you said you could try the RCA out and I dont think its been mentioned
have you had any sound out of it. If its all meant to be ok you should at least be able to hear something. I had a bit of a look for "6.1 touch screen" but only seemed to hit full units.

Those LCDs from Ebay are the same ones that my unit uses.
Since the screen doesn't show anything, I can't select any source.
I will try to connect it through an RCA cable.

Nothing worked. Heating didn't change anything.
Video through RCA out didn't show any kind of image.
I'm not sure what should show on an external monitor, the menu or just the movie itself when the DVD function is selected?

No remote? worth investing in one? Any clues in the user manual.

I have another Kenwood sent out for a reboot issue(there is a shop on Ebay repairing these for $99) and when that unit comes back, I will see how that one shows video on the RCA output.
I don't have a remote for this unit. A newer remote doesn't work with it.
It may be fine the output, but maybe there are some button pushes that has to be done on the screen, or even in the settings something has to be set up to be able to output video, but since the screen is not showing anything, I can't do anything.

In pic 5 just to the right of the connector for the brown ribbon cable there
are what looks like 2 flat green fuses (or they could be empty places and its just the board) perhaps check?

It seems like they are only empty spots, but I will check when I get home.
The symptom on the screen, what could it be? Bad video signal(mainboard) or LCD/T-con issue? In general I mean, like on LCD TVs?
