RCA L37WD12YX1 Takes several attempts to turn no.

I got this tv not working. I replaced a bulged capacitor and another capacitor that frequently goes on this model from my research. Now the tv works but takes several presses of the power button (both on tv and remote) to turn on.
Also sometimes when the tv is on it doesn't always respond to the remote. Yes, the remote has fresh batteries.

Has anyone else fixed this problem?

Okay I seem to have noticed a few more details about the problem. It seems to turn on with one push of the power button if the tv has just been on. If the tv has been off for awhile it takes several pushes of the power button to get it to turn on.

Okay it seems like it's turning on when it's warm.

Get the back off and get some pics of the chassis and power supply. My guess is you either have a loose solder joint, or bad caps that go back into spec when they heat up.

Sounds like you have more bad capacitors...

You have a small seperate 5v stand by board in the set. Could be either of these listed here.

          RCA LA60691121 SMPS P-SMPS Board
          RCA 274595 SMPS P-SMPS Board for L32WD12YX9

The last one I fixed not only had bad caps in the main SMPS but also on this board. The cap I found was not buldged but read bad with my blue esr meter. It was the medium sized cap next to the transformer if memory serves correctly but check them all any way.

Start there and report back your results. Cheers!

Thanks everyone for your responses. I don't yet have a meter to check the capacitors.

I'm posting some pictures of the tv as requested. I put red circles around the 2 capacitors I already changed.

              change the others too,
              except the big one
              with quality
              low internal
              resistance

Tron, so you think think I should change all the other capacitors on the whole board not just in the same area?

                  Hey Gingerbread,

Coincidentally, I'm in Missoula working on fixing the same TV [model]! I don't really know what I'm doing, so I'm planning on just replacing as many caps as I can afford and hope that the TV starts working.

I just came up with a better idea though. I'm currently working on the TV at Replik8tr (address is at the bottom, but it's a Maker Shop-type store for tinkers.) If you want, we could meet up there with the TVs and mix/trade-out W1 and PS boards to see if we can narrow down what's wrong with each of our TVs. Seems like that would make it much easier to narrow down PS/W1/MB problems. Let me know if you are interested.

                    Hi Catfang,

The first capacitor you should replace is the circled one in my 3rd picture. From my research that's the most likely one to fail.

Does your tv power on? Red light?

                      Everyone,

I just got through replacing all the capacitors on the power supply and 5v board. I'm still having the same exact problem. Could my power switch and IR receiver be bad? Any other ideas?

                        One way to find out.
Try removing the power switch and turn on with the remote.

if that fails, replace the switch and remove the IR receiver and try again. It is unlikely that both will have failed.

I recommend removing the switch first as I have seen those fail on RCA's.

Sorry for the late reply! I finally got my replacement caps from Digikey and into Replik8tr yesterday. We replaced the single cap on the W1 board (your pic #3) which had already been replaced once, as well as all six on the SMPS (cap cluster in your pic#2).

Previously, the tv wouldn't come on with the power button, just the red static light. Now the light turns green on power and starts blinking, as well as a small backlight flicker that comes on about once a second. Unfortunately, we don't seem to have a picture yet.

Any suggestions? I have pretty good test equipment available, I just don't know how to use a lot of it. I'm still game for cross-testing parts if you have the time!

Re: RCA L37WD12YX1 Takes several attempts to turn no.

After replacing some of the caps on the SMPS, I tested the 12v and 24v lines coming out of the SMPS and I didn't see any voltage when it wasn't plugged into the Main Board. If I plug in the MB connector and then test the same pins I get voltage, but it's not the correct voltage and seems to vary quite a bit (3-16v, etc). When plugged in like this, I can also see a red blinking light on the scalar board. any ideas?

Looks like there is something wrong with the SMPS, but I'm not sure how to test or trouble shoot from here.

Gingerbreadman, you willing to let me try out or buy your SMPS if you don't get your tv working?

You'll only get outputs from the SMPS when it is turned on, in most cases this will only occur when the PS-ON signal is brought HIGH and it has good AC voltage going into it.
