Re: Found an old tube TV. Want to find out more about it.
I decided to make another video... just because I could...
https://youtu.be/rQiWICi4-3k
And the camera on my phone, for some reason records in a 16:10 aspect ratio, yet scales the video to 1280x720 which is 16:9, resulting in a squashed aspect ratio. It also records in a resolution much lower then 720p, so in this video I've corrected these faults as best I can.Re: Found an old tube TV. Want to fi...use I could...

Re: Found an old tube TV. Want to find out more about it.
Turns out I was mistaken about there being a bad tube. All the TV needed was a few tube sockets cleaned with contact cleaner.
Check it out now:

How lucky am I to find a 50 year old TV, sitting on a curb, and all it needed to provide a good picture was cleaning pots, switches, and a few tube sockets.Re: Found an old tube TV. Want to fi... TV needed was

Re: Found an old tube TV. Want to find out more about it.
Calm down. I know what I am doing. I've posted about this TV on Videokarma and I was advised to swap tubes. Also look at the pic I took of the tube sheet. The tubes I swapped are both 6BL8's... This Tv uses three of them, one for horizontal, one for vertical, and V 11 which is for noise and clipping. The V 11 tube is either bad or very weak. I swapped it with the V7 which is the same tube, and lost vertical and sound, which is what V7 controls.
so I need a 6BL8 tube...Last edited by Mrx3750; 05-22-2015, 01:28 PM.

Re: Found an old tube TV. Want to find out more about it.
Swapped V8 with V11
Picture collapsed to a line and no sound. I think I found the culprit.
So I need a 6BL8 tube. They're pretty common on eBay, but no $ to spend on one right now.
Anybody in the Detroit area want to donate a tube?

Re: Found an old tube TV. Want to find out more about it.
I readjusted the controls, this time paying attention to just what I was adjusting. Vertical and horizontal controls work fine, but I can't get horizontal or vertical to lock in place.
Here's a (crappy) video of it now:
http://youtu.be/2agduuDwDL4
A control on the back is missing a knob. It's labeled 'VERTICAL LIN". Not sure what it does or if it's related to why the image won't stabilize. Perhaps there's a weak tube inside the set.
If it's something easy that I...

Hey guess what?
It's alive! (Sorry for the crap picture. The phone that I took the first pictures on... the one with the good camera... yeah it decided to die on me last night, so I had to rush out and buy a cheap phone to get by until I get some money.)
In any case, sound and picture works, and the set seems to be new enough to have mylar caps instead of wax....

Re: Found an old tube TV. Want to find out more about it.
I'm probably just going to give this set to someone who restores tube TV's as a hobby. Not much sense in me trying to restore it. That and I really don't have the room for a black and white TV from 1965.
I will say that before I realized that it was a tube set, I did plug it in and power it on. The channel indicator lit up. Then I realized that I didn't hear any HV and realized that for how old it was, it was probably a tube set, and I quickly turned it off and unplugged it.
This was all in the span...Last edited by Mrx3750; 05-21-2015, 07:20 AM.

Re: Found an old tube TV. Want to find out more about it.
Yeah, it's March 1965. I found a date code on a 1964 set, and what i thought were two A's is Motorola's M logo. so yeah, it's 50 years old.
I'm going to do some more research on the TV before I decide whether or not to restore it. I don't really have the equipment for testing tube electronics. I may end up giving it to somebody who collects tube TV's as a hobby. Anything to keep it from getting crushed in a garbage truck

ahem...
Right now I just want to get an idea of when it was made and learn more about it. Once I know what I have, I'll go from there...Last edited by Mrx3750; 05-20-2015, 08:33 PM.

Found an old tube TV. Want to find out more about it.
Hey guys, it's been awhile. I was out and about when I saw an old tube TV sitting on the curb. When I say old tube TV, I don't mean some CRT set from the 80's or 90's. I'm talking about a TV with a metal casing and a chassis full of vacuum tubes.
Pictures are attached. Based on what I know, I'd date the TV around the very early 60's. I say that because of the rectangular CRT and the fact that the CRT has integral explosion protection. However the chassis is hand wired, no printed circuit board so it's definitely not a later 60's set.
I don't know if the TV works,...Last edited by Mrx3750; 05-20-2015, 07:50 PM.

Re: Harmon Kardon HK690i, tuner acting weird
Long time no post. Last 6 months or so have been hectic, but I finally got back to this, and I've finally fixed it! I'm posting this mainly to give this thread some much needed closure, and because someone in the future might have the same issue and stumble across this thread.
The problem was the tuner IC, specifically the TC9147AP IC. I eventually discovered that this IC is used in other receivers from the 1980's, and its failure can cause similar issues. Also explained why it sometimes worked, or half worked.

Re: Harmon Kardon HK690i, tuner acting weird
When I change stations, the display reverts back to normal. Yes, tuning to a known FM station produces clear undistorted sound.
I noticed something else. I switched between AM and FM a few times, and the display went from 89.6 to 89.4, but it was still playing music from 101.1
Okay so i need to find TP 1. I assume I test that with a multimeter. What am I looking for?Last edited by Mrx3750; 04-14-2014, 08:51 PM.

Re: Harmon Kardon HK690i, tuner acting weird
I don't think that's the issue. I'm not really close to any FM station, and I need an antenna to pick up anything. Plus the tuner is in a basement which doesn't help with signal.
I did hook up a piece of wire for an AM antenna, and AM seems to be fine. The display even remembers what station it's tuned to on AM.
Got some more weirdness on FM though. I was listening to it and pressed the memory preset button for that station, to turn it off. The station cut out a few seconds later, and the tuner wouldn't budge....Last edited by Mrx3750; 04-13-2014, 07:41 PM.

Re: Harmon Kardon HK690i, tuner acting weird
Where would this be exactly?
Far as I can tell AM works. In that it seems to be in the right band and the frequency display works. I didn't hook up an antenna because I can't recall the last time I ever listened to AM radio. If I need to test it I supposed I could. Only AM station I know of is WWJ.
The grounding strap I mentioned. There's a metal can near the back of the board close to the antenna connections, and the strap goes from it to the chassis. It was soldered on there but the joint broke....Last edited by Mrx3750; 04-10-2014, 03:34 PM.
