    Polaroid flm-3732

Im thinking about buying this tv off of craigslist

The guy said he replaced the caps on the psu and the tv worked fine for a while then the tv went out again

He thought he might of did something wrong so he replaced the entire psu this time

Now it has no power at all and he doesn't want try and fix it

Is it worth trying to fix?
He is selling it to me for $20

Are you looking to fix and resell or fix and keep? I'm not a fan of some of these odd brands. Also, I'm always a little hesitant when I know someone else has attempted a repair.

15 buckaroos sounds like a great deal. Hey, if the set can't be fixed, just selling one of the good parts would likely make up for the purchase price...

Maybe it is a backlight issue, or a bad connection...

Hopefully, it's just a fixable issue with the PSU.

              He originally wanted 40
So its not a total loss if its not repairable

Cool. Yeah, that's probably about as high as I would have gone for a 37" as old as that Polaroid.

If you advertise, you don't have to spend as much time in front of the PC and fight with others over a particular TV. A simple ad that describes the service you provide (e.g. "Cash today for your non-working flat panel TV") and what you're generally looking to buy works well. I ran my ad every morning on CL around 8:00am so that it would appear at the top of the list.

Lastly, I would consider not buying anything smaller than 40"; profit margin is very small on smaller TVs, which leaves little room for error (replacing wrong board, getting a bad board, accidentally blowing up a board or component, replacing an expensive main board). Heck, I know one guy who only buys 50"+ nowadays.

The problem is that most people want outrageous prices for non working tvs

Most will want a lot of money for their non-working TVs. Those are the people you quickly move out of the way to get to the ones who are willing to work with you on a win-win deal.

Caps seem to be an issue with this PSU, so you may have a repeat failure. Did the previous owner replace the caps on this PSU, also? You should add an ESR meter to your shopping list, since you seem to be repairing TVs more frequently

This is an LCD TV. Va and Vs are plasma voltages only.

                                    Re: Polaroid flm-3732

so i spoke with the previous owner again regarding the repairs

he only replaced 2 of the caps on the psu
i can see there are 2 Nichicon caps and the rest are CapXon

he never replaced the entire board
he did buy a an extra board but he found out later he just needed to replace the caps so he sold the extra board and never installed
so he says its the original board with the 2 new caps

i did notice that he left an excess amount of solder on the caps
and that a small drop of the solder "spilled" over onto a trace

                                    would this cause an issue?

either way i am going to resolder the legs

Unless it's just the angle of the picture, it looks to me like that extra solder would have shorted that cap entirely. I don't know that the set would have worked at all like that.
