    Vizio SV420M Troubleshooting, Power Surge

I recently picked up a Vizio SV420M LCD TV that had gone through a lightning storm. It does not turn on at all. I believe I have narrowed it down to the main board being bad (at least) but would like some input from others. The 5 amp fuse did not blow, has no extra resistance. I have tested the power supply/inverter and backlight, they seem to work fine, the 12v will output when the power supply is forced on, both backlights work when the inverter is forced on. The weird thing is that when the left TCON board cable (right cable on the main board, the wider one) is plugged in, the backlight does not come on when forced. I don't see anything burnt or obviously damaged on the front of the TCON board. In any case, the TV doesn't respond at all regardless of the setup, the Vizio logo doesn't light up at all either.

Would buying a $20 TCON replacement be worth getting first over a $100 main board replacement, or would you even bother with the TV due to the risk of having a damaged panel? I'm not sure how much damage the small (I'm assuming since the fuse is fine) surge could do to the panel itself. There is also a 6 piece repair kit for the main board for ~$30 but I think it's all surface mount replacements and I'm not really wanting to try surface mount soldering. There is also a $30 EEPROM chip replacement, but same deal with the soldering, and I don't think that will fix what appears to be a dead main board. I don't really have any extra parts or major equipment to do any further diagnostic with, only a DMM. Thanks in advance for the help.

Re: Vizio SV420M Troubleshooting, Power Surge

Hi dejo87. I believe I may have both a main board and a Tcon for this set at home of unknown status. I picked the set up with several others some time ago. The screen was smashed and several parts had been removed. I don't even know if the main board is good but I'd be willing to work something out with you at a major discount over a new one if you'd like to give it a shot with a money back guarantee if it doesn't. Let me check the model number out for you this evening and let you know.

I'll message you when I get home from work.

Vizio e601i-A3 - Has Sound and Display, But No Backlight - Bad Power Supply Board or Bad LED Bulbs ?
                  by Tynan Dill
I was given this TV from my great uncle. He said it just wouldn't turn on one day out of nowhere, replaced the TV, and gave it to me to possibly fix and use for myself.

Upon bringing it home and plugging it up, it showed a standby light.

I powered it on and without a flashlight, the display showed the "V" but the lighting is very dim, but visible.

The screen seems to blackout and stay black, but with a flashlight I can see the display.

With my Playstation 4 connected via HDMI, and running a game I can hear sound.

                  Assuming...

Vizio E701i-A3 backlight only and now no backlight

                  Hello all,
I’ve tried to repair TVs in the past with some luck. Toms repair manuals got taken down and now thats a bit harder.
I picked this TV up hoping for a quick fix. When the TV would power on, only the backlights would come on. The owner told me they heard loud screeching before it shut off. This alone makes me want to think the main board has an issue.
As I researched, I found the TCON/driver boards were an issue on this unit. I went in troubleshooting the TCON but found good voltages on the TCON. I followed shop jimmys guide to test the transistors and they seem okay....

Is it possible to upgrade from a Vestel 17MB97 main board to a 17MB110 Main board?
                  by cheeky2
I suppose the real question is whether the existing pinouts from ether a 17IPS71 psu are cross compatible with a 17IPS12 psu? If they are then the exchange of the main boards should have no issues providing the screen is compatible with both main boards. Obviously you can change the screen configurations easily enough (providing you have the correct files) for the main board. Why may you ask would I do this? Well a lot of the smart features are no longer working on a Hitachi 48HBT62U main board I wish to give it a new lease of life!
Obviously the same LVDS connector for the screen connection...

Hello, i am working on Vizio M70-C3. It can hardly power on, it takes 15 power button presses or remote. Seems like eeprom problem that I seen before but all reading online says that this tv has power board or main board problem.

When tv powers on vizio V logo shows nice on whole screen. picture 1
When it goes into tv mode it only shows good picture on left side of screen, right is all scrabbled up. pic 2

Vizio D50u-D1 Dead: PSU or Main Board?
                  by fharris1977
Hi. Anyone who has experience with these vizio sets, which pin on this connector is the standby, the 5V pin? Trying to rule out the PSU before ordering a mainboard. I'm getting 0 Volts on all pins on this connector. Trying to jump the standby and PS ON pins to see if the PSU is functioning. Thanks in advance.
