Figured I document this for anyone else having the same issue.
Picked up a 42" Vizio VU42L yesterday. I went into Chicago (~60 miles) to pick up a 60" Sharp for cheap. On my way home, I get a call from a guy with this Vizio wondering if I'm interested. I have him text his address and he's just up the street from where I was parked at when he texted. That's great cause it helps split the cost of gas. I went and checked it out. It would power on with a good backlight. No pic, no sound. I didn't realize this at the time, but it wouldn't power off until it was unplugged.
I originally suspected a fuse on the T-con or a bad T-con altogether but when I realized there was no sound either, I focused on the main board. I pulled the cover off the main and, guess what?? U7 and U33 were both bad. Surprise! In the end, that was all that was wrong. I bought a bunch of 1117 regulators the last time I had a Vizio on the bench so I had the parts on hand. Replaced U7 and U33 and now I've got a working 42" 1080p Vizio.
