5 Year old Samsung Television buzzing

Had a good old turkey dinner today, hope everyone else is enjoying the holiday.

Grandparents are in from out of town, mentioned their tv is having problems. It is a Samsung projection screen, 46" I think, about 5 years old, the 4:3 aspect.

It has a loud buzzing sound coming from the speakers when it is on cable input, old style analog cable, no digital cable box. It works fine when playing dvd's. The sound works but the buzzing is constantly with it, sometimes it will stop buzzing for 5 min or so, but then returns. They have tried removing the dvd player and surround sound stereo from the tv and it made no difference. They have hooked a smaller tv for now and it does not have the buzzing so I guess its not a bad cable signal.

Any of you tv guys seen this problem? Grandpa is planning on taking a screwdriver to it and playing around inside, anything I can suggest to him to look for?

It would be better if his screw driver looked like this.
It's a screwdriver sized scope, I've had it for 15 years.
He may be looking for a very small shorted coupling cap or an open bypass cap.
Possably a bad signal proccess chip, any of these may be encased in metal shielding.

put it on air and see if it is still buzzing.
too high signal level can cause it.common with cable.

No, but the urge to take things apart without having a clue what what is going on is embedded deep in my family's genetic structure. My father is extremely gifted at fixing things this way.

How else do you learn to fix anything? Anyway, it only hurts the first couple of times.

No, but the urge to take things apart without having a clue what what is going on is embedded deep in my family's genetic structure. My father is extremely gifted at fixing things this way.

I would start by asking technician of your cable operator to check the level of signal your parents house is getting. They could adjust it and I would bet that he find it a little too high. So, let him adjust it to lower level and things shall be fine.
If not, open the TV and check for leaking/bulging cap around the sound output parts. 5 years seems like the time, if they used some "hi quality caps" as it getting like standard these times...

could be a ground loop too. Through the cable line, causing a small voltage 60hz hum (50hz in otherplaces) to go through the line and get picked up.
