Re: Cablemodem Motorola SB5100
LMAO THAT is impressive to me. Beautiful soldering. I wish I had that ability. I am too much of a soldering NOOB. Just realized recently, plumbing flux does not work well as soldering flux. LMAO

Re: Is there nothing safe from bad caps???
I gotta say. My pioneers i have had in my car used nothing but Elna through out the whole device. Never had a cap problem with them (even when the cd's came out of the drive so hot I could barely touch them.

Laptop backlight help
I have a toshiba satellite a45. The backlight just stopped working today out of the blue. Is it possible for me to diagnose if it is the inverter or the tube itself? How would I go about doing that? Would posting pictures of the inverter help? I hope it is the inverter because that is relatively cheap. Any other info needed?

Re: Who makes reliable wireless products?
Buffalo makes some good quality stuff, especially after you flash it to DD-WRT. I don't know about long term. I have a WRT-54Gv.3 that has been running 2.5 yrs strong on 3 reboots (2 were for upgraded firmware and 1 was when I changed a setting that required a reboot). No problems AT ALL. By teh way, from what I understand a lot of linksys's stuff is actually WORSE after the cisco aquisition.

Re: What has gotten into me?
Well shit my dad has one of those just sittin out in the garage in a box, along with I dunno if it is a preamp or amp or what and a turntable. Not being used anymore...is it valuable or something?
EDIT: Went out and looked in the box and there is an old pair of Koss Headphones Pro-4AA's. Aparenly he used to be into high quality audio equipment...Last edited by PedroDaGr8; 02-01-2008, 10:02 PM.

Re: Compaq CO1075 LCD With Green Tint
Did you try a different video cable? or by POST do you mean the monitors own post screen (if it has one)? A bad video cable can cause a color shift, while the moving pixel phenomenon can be caused by a dirty analogue signal, see a long video cable that goes near some other power circuitry and you will see what I mean.

Re: Symptom question
By the way the cap company is actually fuhjyyu and it tends to be the biggest problem. A simple quick visual inspection could give you all of the answers that you desire. No need to be afraid of it, just look in at the motherboard see if any of the caps are bulging or are of known bad companies such as GSC or OST etc., open the PSU (usually 4-6 screws and it opens fine) see for bulging caps. That will save you time and let you know what it could be. Rather than switching parts and waiting for an error to occur

Of course, but how long until basic hacking features start creeping in. The top 10 most common passwords would be a good start. pasword1, pass1, letmein, myspace1, 12345678 and so on....

Re: 2Wire 1701HG Gateway
I have heard those 2wire modems are having some major hacking problems.

Talks about it currently going on in Mexico, where the DNS addy for the major bank in mexico is being changed to a phishing site.

Re: Removing Dell Optiplex GX270 MB
It sucks because we have a full load of students every day and these computers are more or less glorified data aquisition devices for beer's law or titrations. Though if we don't have enough they can't do the experiment. Either way these computers drop like flies.

Re: Removing Dell Optiplex GX270 MB
In one of the chemistry labs I TA in we have 40 of these damn computers (fucking goddamn pieces of shit...ok i feel better now). We have had 21 of these go down so far, and dell refuses to proactively do them all. The good news, EKU gets to deal with dell instead of us individuals, EKUs ITDS(information technology ....) is a licensed service provider (so they do their own repairs )...

Re: Akai Reel To Reel Capacitors
I know how bad thallium smells. We used to make a compound in one of my labs using Thallium (before we came up with a better route) and in the last step the thallium is eliminated from the compound, we just said it shitted the thallium out because it smelled so bad....

Re: Linksys BEFSR41 Router Capacitor Solution
a lot of people put fans in these Linksys routers. I have one in the WRT54GSv2 at my parents office. I got a small 40mm fan with integrated heat sink and installed it on the router (just attached the leads to a power lead and ground lead) and the put heatsinks on all of the other major chips that I could see including the whole power section. The end result? it ran much more stable with overclocking (no biggie) and just in general more stable. As in current run time without a restart is over a year now. (Running DD-WRT on it by the ...

Re: Akai Reel To Reel Capacitors
Maybe because SeO2 (likely product of selenium burning) is highly poisonous.
From the MSDS http://www.jtbaker.com/msds/englishhtml/s1130.htm
Health Rating: 3 - Severe (Poison)
Inhalation:
Highly toxic via inhalation. May cause severe breathing problems that may not appear for several hours after exposure. Irritates the upper respiratory tract. May cause headache, fever, chills.
Typically, most poisons smell horrible (evolution) hence most sulfur compounds smell...

Re: Windows Vista Spyware.
Download HijackThis from http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis
and post the log it generates on the forums at www.spywareinfo.com . There is a good change that ad-aware and SpybotSD did not get rid of everything. Spyware these days is getting more and more advanced at hiding itself and preventing you from getting rid of it using an automated scanner. Instead it tends to require a human to parse the logs and come up with a solution, also, tHere are several that love to run in the background...
