• Re: Change old low HDD to a CF card?

Yep, someone did It was fixed very easily, just using fdisk /mbr ... and on next reboot it get format c: /q /s ... and on next reboot it (the SSD in question) booted nicely and worked well ever since. Except the DMA.

My bad, I forget completely that things sometimes need the fix of the MBR, lol. Maybe that could fix the old PATA to SATA adapter in the Dell OptiPlex GX110? Gotta try that one day...

    ...

And it looks like the DMA can be fixed too:

  • Re: Change old low HDD to a CF card?

fzabkar - I did not see how that is relevant, because when I cannot flip the fixed bit, then I cannot use the CF card as HDD. Witch is why this is ATM IMHO irellevant. Unless I can use the CF card as normal HDD, there is no reason to plug that cursed thing back into any computer at all.
What you say also did not make slightest sense to me, altrought it sounds reasonable at first. The 3.3V settings worked well, if the cursed DMA did not get off, I get over 20MB/sec speeds with Pentium 90, witch was fantastic... But only once....

  • Re: Change old low HDD to a CF card?

No, I used 3.3V settings and I sort of give up. It just does not work at all w/o the ability to change it into fixed drive, it is hopeless. There are countless of problems with it and I have done nothing wrong and nothing seems to fix this...

For example when setting up the CF card with Pentium CPU, it fail to even show up in bios, when I switch to AMD K5...! Sure, after total format and clean in my camera and prepping in another machine, it worked, but... this is terrible.
And I swear that when I run the utility to change,...

  • Re: Change old low HDD to a CF card?

Well, I must say that I have a terrible experience with the CF card booting. Just one of the very odd things: once the card was formated on the secondary channel, it did not work (it did not even get detected!) on primary one (Asus TXP4-X).

Another crazy thing it, that when I use the card with AMD K5 PR75 CPU, then I exchange the CPU to P90 ... and suddently the card is not detected during post...! Not once, but all the time. This behaviour is in direct contradiction to how my old HDD (13G old Seagate ST313021A) behave: it get detected...

  • Re: Change old low HDD to a CF card?

Will do... but... what exactly I should be doing? On both machines I tried the switch it reported this and that was in real dos, booted from floppy...

Okay, I disconnect all other devices and as soon, as SuperPi end the run (15+h from now), I try it again.

What are the chances that the device configuration can be changed on my CF card? ... The question is somewhat important, because I noticed several problems with the driver "solution", namely and mainly the DMA off problem - hence the poor performance....

fzabkar - great find! Now... how we can use that information to write a tool, that do just that... but for my CF card type?

What the code says when it report "Fail (error #20)"...? What is wrong there?

    Short report:

Once I managed to run the card using the Hitachi CF card driver with DMA and I get pretty nice 20MB/sec speed:

Indeed. However it depedns on what SD card. I fear that the removable bit could be in play there as well... or maybe Win7/8 does not check on that anymore?

Yea, that sounded ridiculous, but maybe this and the fact, that Vista was downfall saved us all from DRM world or pain? Who knows

But afer few really annoing copy protection it made me switch from buying into pirating movies, so... it is not all rumors there. But that is OT in this thead a...

Sure. OS should not care that much, if being installed on removable or fixed device. But since Win is very aggressvive on HDD usage, I can see why M$ decided that it is a good thing to use only not removable devices. Some swapping commands probably cannot be checking, if the HDD is "still there."

I believe you are misinformed. DRM is all about pirating movies and music, not Windows. M$ is all about dominating the market, even if they have the handout Win for free. See...

Well, DMA is used, so there is no difference after reboot. It might, however, be related to PCI bus clock 41.7MHz (FSB 83MHz).

Curiously as long, as the S3 Trio64 GFX card is used, it works stable (PCI latency 42). When swaped to ATI Rage XL, Win fail to boot and Win install fail to start.

It looks working, tough, using the CF card adapter. Interesting...

    Anyway:

Well, since SanDisk is not going to reply, I tried with the default 5V setting the DeLock adapter I mentioned earlier...

  • Change old low HDD to a CF card?

    Segate 13G ST313021A on Pentium 90 @ 125MHz:

    Average - 6.4MB/sec - now this is SPEEED! :p

    ...

I wonder, if anyone have in operation slower HDD

    ...

Therefore I wonder, if someone have a experience with replacing such SLOOOW HDDs with PATA to CF adapter and CF card(s)? The latest models promise very fast speeds - 160MB/sec is quite above PATA possibilities:

SanDIsk Extreme PRO 32G CF card

...and since the adapters are just wires, connecting the CF card to PATA interface...

  • Re: 12MHz clock generator for the Holtek HT6542b

Well, I optimize my Windows and I should be even more competitive then with the P90. Fun stuff. Maybe I should do some voltmoding and extreme cooling...

Or at least figure out with WPCREDIT how to change TRP to 2 from 3... because that would be kick-a$$ then!

  • Tantal-Polymer SMD caps - best brands?

Guys, I wonder, what are the best brands that made tantal-polymer caps.

I usualy go with Kemet caps:
Some can do 6100mA ripple current - 6mOhm version of the T520C227M006ATE006, witch is usually available only in 15mOhm version

    (220uF 6.3V 6x3.2mm - for old GFX cards, mostly)
...but since you can buy only the 15mOhm version, then you have to settle with 3300mA ripple current.

Sometimes some Panasonic caps are good too:
    A 470uF 2.5V suxxka 2R5TPF470M6L can do 6mOhm and 4400mA is permisible:

  • Re: 12MHz clock generator for the Holtek HT6542b

Reporting sucess! I desoldered the complete PS/2 controller Holtek HT6542b from the board, bend up pins 2 and 3, soldered it back and soldered a 12MHz crystal on it, gluing it later to it by epoxide:

(preliminary pics, I did cleared the excessive amounts of tin meanwhile)

And the keyboard & mice worked nicely on all the FSB settings the board can...

Reason? Simple. Keyboard and mouse fail to work, when I use the ref/2 FSB clock of 7.14MHz. That is why and adding the crystal aim to fix this problem, so the Holtek clock will be entierly independent of the FSB, hence no more problems at "superlow" FSB clocks.Re: 12MHz clock generator for the Holtek HT6542b

Where is what? You gotta say what do you mean by the "it." If you mean the 4 legs crystal I posted, then I mentioned that such things are used on Amiga Blizzard 1260 card:

So if you asking about the Blizzard 1260 CPU card for Amiga 1200, then it was there:

So, when I take this 12MHz crystal:
    http://www.gme.cz/krystal-hc49-u-q-12mhz-p131-012

...and solder it on the legs 2 and 3 (while separating them from the mainboard first by cut & bend up), I should be good to go?

No difference of witch pins go where? I keep asking just to be absolutely sure.

    And Amiga used this:

But... I never worked with crystal, so... a little basic could be handy.

    First:
What crystal? 12MHz probably, but... search on Digikey for what to get crystals? Are some good brands? Could I get small yet reliable and stable one...?

I mean reasonably small, that I can glue it on top of the Holtek chip, witch is rather big suxxka:

    Second:
Witch leg go where? I mean... last time I worked with crystals was overclocking on Amiga. CPU accelerator from Phase5...
