Vizio VP42 strange finds

Hi guys,
I picked this 42" plasma Vizio VP42 from someone I know in the community. He said it turns on but does not have any image. First thing I did was power on the tv set without any input. I saw the TV channel number briefly displayed and then slowly fade away as the backlight problem in LCD, but when I press on the control buttons and the screen response to it just as normal. Additionally, I found another strange thing, may be it has to do with plasma, that is the power button can shut the set off but won't turn the set on as I press again after I shut off. It took a few presses for it to come on again.

I opened the back out visually inspect for anything abnormal and found nothing but some grease stuff on one of the board (photos attached) completely covered a few components in that area.

The tv set has been working fine, at least with AV input, for almost a week accept the power thing. The first power on no problem but if I turn it off then try to turn it back on I would have to press a few times or press and hold the power button a couple seconds. The power button on remote doesn't response at all, other buttons are working fine.

My questions are what is that oily stuff? would it have anything to do with the condition of the set? why the screen behave like that at first and I haven't seen it again? Lastly, the power on and off behavior?

update....
after using the set a few weeks, here is what I found.
-The Channel +/- buttons on the control panel are unresponsive, it worked once and I never able to make it work again. The Vol +/-, the Input selection, the Menu buttons all work well.
-The remote control is totally dead like nothing happened; i order a new remote still nothing work.
-The picture look pinkish (sorry my vocabulary is quite limited) as if the tint control was set way-off. I adjusted the tint control the other way to somewhat off-setting the pinkish effect.

I will try to take a picture of the screen with everything set as default tonight, hope it'll help my poor english in describing the thing.

Is there anyway to test the buttons board? or how likely this board gone bad? The tv works fine but it would take several attempts to power it on/off from the on board buttons set, it doesn't response to the remote control at all regardless what I do to it. Please help

It's normal for a TV to have to wait about 5 to 10 seconds to switch on again, especially for a plasma, due to how the power has to be correctly shut off internally.

As for testing the button board, you can check the various signal wires coming off it and see if pressing the buttons elicits any response. Typically, there is one separate POWER KEY button and then the other buttons are signalled through different voltage levels, though this may vary.

Don't worry about the oily stuff, that should be fine. I am not sure what you mean by it takes a few time for the tv to turn on, but sometimes that is exactly what bad capacitors will do. Like tom said, sometimes it can take up to 10 seconds for a plasma to turn on depending on make and model. Are you pressing once then waiting 10 seconds and doing it again and having the same issue? If so look at your capcacitors on your power supply to see if they are bulged. If they are you need to replace them. This is what a bulged capacitor looks like.

Now if I where you, I would do a visual check on all the boards for this issue. You most likely won't see it anywhere but on the power supply, since your tv is still working.

As for the buttons, like tom said, do a voltage check, if you don't get anything, that IR board should be pretty sheap to replace. I strongly doubt that the remote is the issue, but that replacement remote, are you sure you programmed it correctly? What kind of replacement remote are you using? is this a universal remote? If so make sure you program the correct code into it.

thanks tom66, I hope it was that simple because it really only come on and shut off when it wants to doesn't matter how many times I press the power button. I'll try to pay attention to that next time I have a chance to work on my hobbie project.

Note, on some older model vizio TV's, once you turn off the TV you'll have to wait a couple seconds to be able to turn it back on. I noticed this on alot of vizios lately.
