vw42lfhdtv10a hit by lighting only logo works

    Hello,
I have a friends 42in vizio that i wanted to see if i can fix. His house got struck by lightning over the summer last year.

I'm not good at the lingo or very knowledgable at this kinda of stuff but i like to tinker and am pretty handy with a soldering iron, but when it comes to testing with a voltmeter i'm clueless..

Here's the jist of it with the back ripped off and all the boards exposed there are no signs of damage all the caps are flat on the top nothing burnt or melted on any of the boards.

With the back off and tv pluged in only visable thing working is the vizio logo is orange when i hit the power button on the remote it turns white.. if i hit the power button again it goes back to orange etc... that's it nothing else is working.

I'm looking to just replace a whole board i'm thinking the main power board but what do i know, looking for suggestions if you had to gamble with this very little info i provided you..what would you suspect to be the culprit???

    Thanks in advance...

Can you supply some pictures? Then we can highlight areas to test.

here's some pics hopefully they are enough if not tonight when i get home from work i can put up more.

the last picture was the only cap that i thought looked buldged but after looking at the picture must be just the lining around it.

OK, right now the 5V stanby power supply is working and the main board does response to the power switch.
Please check the DC voltage on the PS_ON pin of the power supply when the logo is orange and when it turns white (TV power on), Black probe to the chassis for the secondary side ground ref point.
Please red my basic guide on how the LCD TV works.

And where is the ps on located on the board?

It'll be on the connections between the main board (has video inputs like HDMI) and the power board.

Re: vw42lfhdtv10a hit by lighting only logo works

My Vizio (37 LCD w/ similar PSU) was also taken out by lightning. It turned out to be problems on both the Main and the PSU boards.

I still haven't figured out what parts are bad. I recapped the PSU and it still needs a shot of heat to get started properly.

On the main board, I found a shorted fuse and upon further investigation found that there is a dead short to ground on the circuit after the blown fuse.

You'll first want to do as Budm said, and test PSON voltage. Put the black lead to the chassis or one of the screws that hold the board down and the red on PSON. Have the TV off and then monitor the voltage while you turn the TV on.

You should see over 3 volts. If you do, then proceed to test all other pins on those connectors. Report your findings here.

sorry it took so long to check out things, but my brand new voltmeter didn't work so I gad to purchase another one...heres my results :

                      unit in standby
3 wirers have voltage (all read 5.19v) the white grey and purple which are labeled "5vsb" on the board

                      unit turned on "white logo"
black wirer that reads "pson" gives me a 3.17v reading
and the same for the 3 wirers in standby mode (5.19v)
and then on the board where it says ABC I get a 5.03v reading from the brown or (b) wirer and a 2.77v reading from the black or (a) wirer...the c is blank... and all the wirers in between are 0.00 or darn close some are like 00.2etc... so basically the 12v and sgnd part of the board isn't working..

so is my power board shot?

                      thanks..

Your PS_ON is OK, so the power supply board does have problem. No way to tell if the main board is fully function until you get the power supply board fixed or get another one first.
Lighting can destroy lots of stuff.
The A,B,C are from the the main board for the BL_ON, Dim, PWM DIM, not in that order, those signals are just passing through the power supply board for cleaner wiring.

The only way to tell is if all the connectors are the same.

I checked shopjimmy.com and it appears to be compatible. I'd definitely heed Tom's advice and match up connectors and such to be sure.

                              Here are results for DPS-260HP-1

Notice it lists both models you mentioned in the "Known Models" column on the left.

I have the same model vizio tv and only have the amber light on. It doesn't change when I push the power button or with the remote. The only voltage Im getting is the 5vsb. Will post pictures later. Any help please. I'm thinking the main board.

follow same advice given in above posts, it starts with the power supply, careful when working with power supply, HIGH VOLTAGE, on primary side can be deadly.

Check the Voltage regulators on the main board.
