Wharfdale LCD42F1080P Thought I had cracked it!

    Hi Guys,

Wish I hadnt told my friends I fixed another friends TV! Another one was given to me last week, I guess I am just to kind

See attached images of a friends Wharfdale LCD42F1080P TV. The original fault was it would power up have sound and the image would disapprear in about 1 second, so I checked around and found on the inverter some of the coils were detached from the PCB see picture, so I ordered one and fitted it. thinking great problem solved, but unfortunatly I now get the issue shown in attached pictures, get sound and the image scrolls down the screen in grey, I seem to recall as soon as I fitted the inverter I had a image but the screen was showing colour but covered in vertical lines.

I have attached an image to show the blue screen with the menu up.

I was thinking T-Con? any thoughts?

Andy, wishing he kept his mouth shut!

First ask how all those coils are broken off. (They don't just fall off!)

Second ask your friend why they dropped their TV.

Then get a SCART cable which supports RGB and switch the DVD player over.

      Hi Tom,

I thought that as I couldnt imagion they would just fall off, I had asked him that and he said he never remebers it being dropped. Doh! yes I had the wrong scart in the DVD player!

So I have just hooked up to HDMI and I get the following lines over the screen.

Tried different modes in setting but couldnt get rid of them, did know if that is as good as it get with a cheap TV?

That's probably further damage from it being dropped. And either the guy has carefully moved each transformer, or he dropped it.

          Hi Tom,

With my little knowledge I thought it wouldnt hurt to clean and check the T-Con connectors were clean and seated correctly. I hadnt looked at the T-Con on this TV as you have to take off a big metal plate with all the PCB's on. I did and found the following damage on the T-Con, could that have been caused by the inverter shorting out etc? as that looks to me like its blown rather that impact damage?

Have yoyu seen that before? Might be worth getting a T-Con and seeing what happens? do you think that could be causing the lines over the screen?

            Holy f***!

I have never seen that damage done before?! I am amazed ANYTHING on that T-con is still working. What a laugh. Amazing such damage occurred with only minor performance degradation!

The inverter hasn't caused that though. They are completely independent sub systems.

I have to say I am surprised, the chip doesnt look burnt at all and I cant see that from it being dropped. Could that cause the screen covered in vertical lines?

Only I dont want to get beaten by this one.

                It is shattered completely.
It is therefore broken. (Mending it with super glue would not work.)
                It is on the T-con.
                The T-con processes video.

                What do you think?

Frankly I wouldn't put a penny more into it as it has clearly sustained significant damage, which is due to a user who is lying to you about the cause of the damage.

                  Hi Tom,

Yes I know it cannot be glued back on, I was just asking if the T-Con would cause the fault of the lines across the screen as per the last few pics I posted.

I know he went away for the weekend the other week and his flat mate was there on his own and he isnt a guy you can trust, I just get that vibe from him, so wonder if he damaged it and wont admit it.

If you think the T-Con would resolve the image probs then I think he would want me to try it.

Yes, that could cause those lines all too easily.

He has tried to repair this and damaged it further, Your friend that is.

You can see the scrape mark off a screwdriver, it ripped a resistor off and damaged that chip. (See pic)

Sure that screwdriver wasn't hit with a hammer to cause that much damage on the chip?

Hi Guys, I have heard from my friend, it turns out that his flat mate did knock the TV over and decided to take it apart and in the process has damaged the PCB trying to get it out as it was stuck with some tape to the frame of the cover over the T-Con and when he tried to remove the Inverter he knocked of the coils!! I have to say maybe he should have just left it alone anyway going to order the T-Con and see what happens.

                          Andy

PS - Thanks guys, this is such a useful site I have learned alot about fault finding TV's already, so thank you for all your support.

What a clumsy idiot. I hope he is billed for the damage caused.

Maybe if you're lucky, say that chip is actually "still working". (You may be lucky, i'm surprised that with that damage, the tv actually still plays a picture!) Maybe that scraped off resistor could be the problem causing the vertical lines? You could try replacing it and see what happens. If it works then great, you just fixed it! If not eh, like a 3 dollar loss? Worth a shot =D

LOL, I don't think that chip is working any more. The die is completely shattered... It's probably just used for some non-critical features like display speed enhancement, or image processing.
