    Nexus NX-502 Plasma

First post on a problematic tv for me, also my first plasma. It is a nexus nx502 using the lg pdp50x3 panel, it uses an advent 667phst18-200 power board. I received the tv from the original owner after it made a loud bang and quit working.

I opened it up expecting to find some blown capacitors and indeed there was one large 330uf filter cap with the top vented. The fuse was still good so I ordered up two new Panasonic caps to replace the filter caps. After soldering in the replacements I tried to turn on the tv only to have a 100pf multilayer ceramic bypass cap explode as well as the chopper ic strx6769 and of course blow the fuse. I found replacement parts and soldered them in. The set passed the light bulb test turning on for a second then back off. I applied a new fuse and plugged in the set (fuse ok) when I hit the power button I got to watch my 15$ ic explode.
All the secondary side components are testing ok, I was thinking maybe its something that only breaks down when fully powered up

I have ring tested the primary and secondary of the switch mode transformers and they are ringing ok. With the strx6769 out of circuit I get my 5v, 12v and 3.3v on my main board. As far as I can tell this means the strx6769 provides my vs and va voltages only. Can a short on a different board drag enough current across the chip to make it explode or
should I still be concentrating on my power board as the main culprit? My new str chips should be here today and I can continue trouble shooting after they get here.

I have the following test equipment-Oscilloscope, multimeter, capacitance meter, esr meter, ring tester, and my trusty light bulb. I can shoot more pictures later but here is the power board from shopjimmy. The strx6769 is the chip about dead center in the board.

Really need pictures of your boards if we are to look for faults - if you post more
please please post good clear pictures of the whole chassis, and then pictures of each board, front and back (in the same orientation) and close up of connectors, (max resolution 2000x2000 and 2MB) using the manage attachments button, which is found by clicking "go advanced" under quick reply.

Please do not post inline and offsite as they slow down the loading of pages.

      Re: Nexus NX-502 Plasma

I spent the last two hours getting the pictures to upload, only to have the system log me out and delete my post. on a better note I was testing the board off chassis and noticed it was acting differently. Low and behold I have my vs voltages as long as the ground screw isn't tied to the chassis. It only grounds in one spot on the primary and one on the secondary. So I am gathering that one of my components is shorting to ground in the secondary. I am only uploading the first 3 pictures today, I will upload the rest when I get on a faster internet connection.

Unplug both power connectors going to the lefthand large board. If Vs rises, the problem is with the Y-sustain or Z-sustain.

No vs even with connectors unhooked, unless board is off chassis. Nothing tests as shorted though. Driving me nuts.

            How are you testing VS?
Any clicks from relay when power button pressed?

              Re: Nexus NX-502 Plasma

multimeter and scope. I hooked it back up and it is now working with everything hooked up but 2 wire connectors, one is the 4 wire 5v and gnd to the ydrive board and the other is the the right hand side connector to the digital board. If I connect either it cycles quickly and chirps. I am using the auto mode to cycle voltages (turns on each voltage for about 2 seconds) Im not sure if it can source enough volt/amps with the lightbulb as it is a 400 watt tv and only 100 watt bulb, might be what is causing the chirping

edit, when I fixed the power board previously (everything was hooked up) it turned on for about a second before blowing the ic and fuse. nervous about trying that power button again

On the 5V connector going to Y-sustain, what resistance do you measure across 5V and GND.

If I unplug the ysus power will the set power on just without a picture? Im not sure if I have trouble on more than one board now or not as the 5v jumps from ysus to control and the control is tied back into the digital board. If I leave the connector unhooked to the digital and 5v to the ysus it seems to cycle properly.

ok tried it a few ways. with the 2 large looms to the ysus unplugged and everything else plugged in the status light turns blue for about 4 seconds then turns back to red and power supply makes a squeak. Testing for voltages I do get 5v, but no va or vs. If I unplug the second connector on the digital board (labeled 782.PHIFB31-69C) I get 196v on the vs but the va climbs all the way up past 115v before dropping off when the set goes back into standby.

Any further ideas on this set? What does the resistance reading on my 5v signify? So far all the troubles I have had have been on my power supply board. It seems to be working now But I think it may still have some trouble and think it is what is causing the set to go into standby. Ive fixed a bunch of lcds but these plasmas are a whole different animal.

It wont output that voltage unless it has the connectors unplugged to the digital board. I havent had the ysus plugged in and the digital unhooked so I dont think the panel has seen those voltages; only my meter while testing the power supply. And it only outputs that for a few seconds before going into standby. but that means my va supply is fouled up on the ps right? I was pondering if the feedback circuit wasnt working if it could cause the ic to output more voltage than it is supposed to? I was checking the optos and one is testing different than the other 3. going to de-solder and see if it the opto or something else in circuit

Tom, I was thinking about diving into this one again, I conceded defeat on the power supply and have been waiting for one to come on the market. I was wondering if it was possible to use this lg power supply in place of the advent. It was used on tvs with the same panel number (pdp50x3####) and appears to have the same pin out on the outputs. How likely is it that my control board will be able to communicate properly? All my other boards are made by LG. Thanks for any input you can provide.

                                    Hi There,

This TV was auto switching off after few seconds with some vertical lines on the screen, so got a new TCON board and replaced it.

After replacing the TCON board it was working fine and i set it up with everything, used for few hours, then had the bright idea to update the software on it. During the update process, TV switched off and now no audio or video. No relay switch sound.

                                    More Details
