ok tom i have had a fiddle with the bottom board i have tried two different boards and the ribbon cable is still getting hot, but could that be because these board are broken

what's the best way to test them. i did notice a very faint spark coming from what i think are surface mounted fuses i could be wrong (the little black rectangle things), it was the top board the first connection on the right

If the ribbon cable is getting hot you either have the heat clamps removed, or the panekl driver is defective... unfortunately the last is condemning to the panel.

the heat clamp is the big long ally thing that runs along the bottom of the boards oooohhh i see now that disperses the heat evenly

Yes, you did not remove this while the panel was active right?

none of the ribbon cables look burnt or damaged and all contacts look good

But even 30 seconds can cook the delicate chips embedded on them, which are not user serviceable, except by replacing the plasma panel itself... not worth it. Just put it back together and hope you get original symptoms.

ok i have put it all back together turned it on half the screen is black with faint pixels showing through, you can see the faint outlines of light on the dark-side

the sticker on the screen, its a reflection of the metal back panel

if i disconnect the ribbon cables individually the part of the black bit disappears and a whites screen takes its place. i am wondering if i have shorted the bottom boards

I think the drivers have burnt out unfortunately as before you were at least getting a dodgy picture, try reseating the connectors but I am not holding out much hope.

The bottom boards don't really "short", as there's barely anything on them.
If you replaced those bottom boards perhaps swap out for the older ones that might still be good?

is there a way i can test the board, because if the panel if broke i would like to know if boards still work

i did try the old boards and the set would not turn on

There are lots of resistors on them -- basically the only thing that can fail, so test them.

So all the little black rectangle things are resistors

not sure if i am doing it right but i have measured resistors and i am getting 0.03 ohms

They should be something like 0.47 ohms to 10 ohms...
