LG 42PC3D - dim picture, black jaggies?

    Good afternoon, folks.

I picked up a freebie LG 42" Plasma TV from a friend. I've repaired a few "dead" LCD monitors with bad capacitors, and thought I'd give a go to fixing this beast up also. However, it clearly isn't a simple bad cap issue in this instance!

Some googling lead me to this forum.

My issue is that the tv works, and there is a picture, but the picture is quite dim. It is a lot like the issue discussed in this thread: https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showth...ghlight=42pc3d. This leads me to suspect that it is the Z-SUS board.

However, one additional symptom is that there is a large black jagged-edge border around the image also. These move around a bit and seem to fade as the tv warms up. Would this still be an issue with the Z-SUS board, or do I likely have more than one problem here?

Any help or pointers would be gratefully accepted!
    thank-you.

PS: somewhere else, someone mentioned fixing up a TV that only had so-many hundred hours on it. I've been all through the menu and could not find anywhere to check that. Anyone know if this value is hidden in one of the LG menus somewhere for me to find?

    thanks

Definitely a z-sustain failure if you've got a dim, slow to update or purple tinted picture.

        Thanks for the confirmation, Tom.
Looks like $68 and up for a new board (googled and found that at shopjimmy.com)

Anyone in Canada (like I am) got any recommendations on places to order assemblies, or is it best to just hop the border and shop in the USA?

Plus outrageous shipping charges, usually. You can also replace the IPM if you have very good desoldering equipment. The IPM is the big device under the heatsink. You need to desolder it. If you can remove it without damaging the board, the IPM is available from about $20 upwards, from what I remember.

If you press and hold the menu button on the set and then press and hold the menu button on the remote it will bring up a menu that will have the information. You may have to do it in reverse order, I can't be sure, but either way it will bring up different hidden menus and one of them has the hours on it.

On an LG, just do both for 5~10 seconds, no need to get one particular order (at least in my experience.)
              On some LG's it's Menu 3, 1, 4, 1, 5, 9. Guess the software engineers were feeling somewhat geeky

Well, I can desolder, at least it's worth a try. I like your $20 memory. Any suggestions where? I found one place that wants $48 for a kit consisting of the IPM and a fuse... um, no, then I'd just spend $20 more and get the whole thing. I have to keep looking...

                thanks again!

Re: LG 42PC3D - dim picture, black jaggies?

                  Cheap:
                  http://www.ebay.com/itm/YPPD-J006A-2...item2c69a51250
                  http://www.ebay.com/itm/YPPD-J006A-2...item19c9f26818

Make sure part number is correct. The only way to be sure is to remove the original because it is written on the top, and the heatsink is screwed on from underneath the board.

Thanks, I posted too soon, I should have done some more digging first.
The part number for mine is actually written on the SIDE of the heat sink, so I know that I've got a YPPD-J018E in there. I also came across a reference from Coppell TV Repair (one of the vendors you link to) that a STK795-820 is an acceptable alternative. (and possibly STK795-821, though they don't use that one themselves.)

So far an ebay search shows me it'll run about $35 at the cheapest, shipping included. Not bad, but not $20. I was hoping you knew somewhere else.

From googling around it looks like I can find a complete 6871qzh956a Z-SUS board for about $65.

                    thanks for your help!

Sorry for the incorrect price. I would blame the troubled global economy and weakness of the US dollar compared to the Chinese yuan, but I'd be lying, because I just guessed from past experience.

Just to bring some closure to this...

It was a failure. Today, I give up.

I found alibaba.com where I could get the IPM for $29 shipped to me here in Canada. So I took the chance.

Desoldering was a bear. I would not recommend this for any other "less experienced" folks like myself. I persisted and finally got all the bits off today, and the holes cleared. The $70 replacement board would be a MUCH less painful, less stressful, less work, option for anyone else with this issue.

I fastened the new chip to the heat sink, and mounted it on the board and soldered it into place. Replaced the board in the TV, and closed up the back and turned it on.

The picture is STILL dim, and there are STILL black jaggies entering the screen from the right. There seem to be fewer, but they are still there, and seem to move in and out.

Forget it. I'm done. I'm not tossing any more money into this.

On which board did you change the IPM?

On the Z-sus board, of course.

Are you just making sure or is there more to this question?

There is a couple transistors on that board that is shorted out

I have the same issue with mine. Did you ever get it repaired or give up?

I also snooped around and found other caps swollen and pushed open. I am a phone guy so is it worth taking these boards in for repair or just pitch the whole thing?
