I think a hot bar soldering would be also solution. Better??? Anyone uses hot bar soldering machine?

Re: Samsung LN52A530P1FXZA Tab bonding repair

I was given a LN46A55OP3f with the same issues y'all seem to have. goofy picture on the right side until it "arms up" then it is great.

Read through these threads and I think bad tabbing is the issue, or at least a good place to start. My friend who gave it to me said it was fine, then she moved and after the move the TV had this problem.

My question is how can you tell the tab bonding is bad? I have removed the metal frame and can see the tabs but nothing stands out as being bad. Should I just use the thermal pad on all of the pads on the right since that is where the screen is goofy? And should I just do the pads at the bottom, or the ones along the sides too?

      Thanks!!

Re: Samsung LN52A530P1FXZA Tab bonding repair

@chiliverde I use an industrial microscope to check bonding issue, with an 200Mhz oscilloscope i check return signals on LCD screen PCB. The best way to do for you is with
the pads at the bottom and top of COF. Or use a tool to solder as in the pictures.

@Jane Hot bar soldering is factory method, you need this to solder/replace the COF on glass.

          Bud,

Sony KDL52Z5100 three months past warranty with tab issue
Black horizontal lines flicker for 30 minutes

1 - How much material do I order to do all pads on a 52" ?
Do you still recommend the .125" thickness from digikey or was the other stuff better?

2 - Do I tape the entire tab or just the middle part like photos a couple pages back?

3 - and also on the T-CON processing IC so its heat is transferred to the metal shield better Where exactly should I apply the material to these? Or should I not? I never move or flex the tv. There are a lot of videos where they add tape to the t-con cables for ghosting. Is that how you fix them if the tabs on the top are not the problem?

          Thanks,
If this works I won't hate Sony "as much" anymore (last three sets were defective on me)

Re: Samsung LN52A530P1FXZA Tab bonding repair

Hi, got no response so here is what I did if anyone else cares reading this.

Ordered four pads that are 4"x4" .125" thick. Only needed one though.

I noticed the gold tabs are all along the entire circuit board length so I wasn't sure if it was ok to have the pads touching the areas where there were no connections. I carefully cut the pads the exact width of the tabs. I noticed some cut the tabs narrower and just put them in the center of the tab. Not sure why they did that. Maybe it is better that way. I don't know.

I also didn't wrap the pad over the corner to the front of the TV screen. I didn't see a reason to. There is just a ribbon cable there that goes into the led panel, no connection.

After assembly you can look at the gap between the tv and the metal frame and see that the new pads are definitely being contacted by the frame. The circuit boards have "gaskets" on them already. I assume they are just to make sure the metal frame won't contact the circuit board, but anyway they almost contact the metal frame now, the new pads I put on are a tad thicker. Of course I put the top of the metal frame back on first so the new pads wouldn't get pushed off when assembling.

Photos below. Works so far. My problem was thin black horizontal lines mainly on the top and bottom that would flicker and go away after 30 minutes.

If this fix fails I will post again. If not know it is working.

Not I have to take apart another Sony with a bad Samsung LED light strip in it.

Thx for the pictures! I have not read though the whole thread but what does it do? Just pressure on the tabs? It would look like a temporary fix if the tab has come off......

"It would look like a temporary fix if the tab has come off....." if the whole tab came off then it will be hard to put it back due to alignment problem, the pad just put the pressure on the connections between the tab and the PCB traces.

Hmm ok , thought it was a fix for a tab that came loose.....
I fixed a philips 8404 model last year which had the tab bonding problem. Fixed it with tape and some hard carbon , worked perfectly. ( half screen black/half picture ).

What about UV glue? Its the glue that they use on lcd screens ( samsung ) , what if you put some uv glue between the tabs and the traces? Just a thought...

I don't quite get what you have done here. Is the issue a detached tab bond or is it overheating of the IC? Why use the transfer pad if a detached bond is the problem? Just wondering if this is similar to my problem: https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showth...058#post616058

The silicone pads can handle the heat better than rubber bumpers, and stay in place well, the foam does not work well in heated condition and will shrink or do not stay in place, the pad also transfer the heat form the ICs to the frame.

So the problem in your case was IC failure due to overheat?

ICs were fine if they were bad I would not be able to fix them, the tab bonding were bad and to keep the ICs at lower temperature the pads help transfer the heat to the frame.

Ok, so the pads have dual function, better heat transfer and applying pressure to the tab bonds. Thanks

I'm attempting this fix and have used multiple layers of some 1mm thick silicone heat pad from DealXtreme (http://www.dx.com/p/diy-silicone-the...m-x-1mm-104609) with some Kapton (heat resistant) tape on top of it, to keep it in place as I take the metal bezel on and off.

But I've just had a thought - would the Kapton tape be reducing the heat transfer? I mean, the tab is being pushed into place OK, but maybe not cooling down as much as it would without the Kapton tape? Or is Kapton tape good at heat transfer, or at least not much of a barrier?

FWIW. If anyone reads this thread, look up about 10 posts and you will see photos I posted of how I carefully cut the silicone pads to the correct size. Maybe I should have just haphazzardly cut larger pads that overlapped a lot like other people did. After a few months the lines came back in my set when I first turn it one. I can push a corner of the set and the lines go away.

I will order some more of the stuff and redo it I guess cutting larger pads this time. They seem to be quite snug when I put the metal frame over them. Unless this material has memory and has loosened up some after being squeezed a few months they should still be tight.

                                            Problem

This is an LG edge LED lit LCD Display. The LEDs are on the bottom edge of the display. There are 2 bars (left and right) Each bar has many LEDs and a 6 pin connector. Each pin drive several LEDs thus is the highest current flow / heat junction. The weak lead free solder gradually fails with thermal expansion/contraction cycling and increases resistance. PSU will compensate up to a point, then when the current is too high, PSU just shut down the backlight causing a dark display. I have even seen one which the connector just fell off as solder points became completely detached....
