Mitsubishi LT-46149. Ghosting and darness on right side. Vert and horz lines.

Just picked up a 46" Mitsubishi LCD TV. When it's set to pickup an over the air signal, the screen is super bright on the left side, darker in the middle and kinda bright on the right side.

When set to DEMO, the left side and middle are dark and the right side is normal. This was with the backlight set to brilliant by the way. I've since turned it to natural.

After 5-10 minutes, these lines appear. Vertical and horizontal. The entire picture will even go white.

At this point, I noticed that the T-CON board was really putting out some heat. I couldn't keep my finger on the cover for more than a few seconds. I powered the set off and let it sit for a while. Then I decided I wanted to get another picture and turned it back on. When it came on, the T-CON board was continuously whining, it sounded very similar to nails on a blackboard. While the board whined, the screen looked like this.

Playing with the ribbons and flexing the screen a little make no difference whatsoever. I'm not ruling out the LCD panel but I see no evidence yet that would tell me it's bad. Right now, I'd say it's the T-CON board but it may be a low voltage input to the T-CON board. I really, really hate spending money on a new board just to find out that wasn't the problem. In fact, the only board I've ever purchased showed up DOA from ShopJimmy. I really hate that.

So, where should I start? I guess I just want to hear some opinions from folks with more experience at this than me. I'll get pics of the back of the TV up in a minute or two. John

Try cooling the T-CON board with freeze spray? You can use canned air duster upside down to egt really cool air out for cooling the board.

One more question for you budm. I can't get the cover off of the T-CON board without unplugging the board completely, the connectors run through slots in the cover instead of under the cover. How do you get the ribbons out of the T-Con board without ruining them?

You need to flip up 90 degree the black locking plactic up to release the cables. Do it GENTLY!

          Got it, thanks.

Documented for future onlookers. In this case, the black plastic lock flipped down 90 degrees. The T-CON board is on the top of this set. I used a dental pick to CAREFULLY pull the black plastic piece away from the ribbon.

What is the panel manufacturer in this set? Is it SAMSUNG? The fading reminded me of this problem with a Sony using a Samsung panel:

Thanks for that link Tom. I really hate to say I think it's in the panel. With the left two ribbons disconnected from the T-CON board, the right half of the screen showed a good clear picture, the left half was black, but at power on, there was white fade that slowly bled away to the left of the screen. Looks like I'm going to have to keep digging.

What happens with the left two connected and the right two unplugged?

Horizontal lines on the left, vertical on the right, and even higher pitched whining from the T-CON board.

Well I got down to the panel just now. I see no loose ribbons. I turned the power on and couldn't get the picture to change at all by playing with the ribbons. I went ahead and put some rubber strips on there anyway since I was in there. I'm really leaning towards the T-CON board now.

So, with this freeze spray. Do I just spray the board with the power on or what?

Spray it on the large processors on the t-con and main board.

With it unplugged, plugged in but not on, or plugged in and powered on?

Got it. I'll post back with results. As of now, I've got it mostly back together and the T-CON whines the whole time now. No more ghosting or darkness, just lines and whine. I'm wondering if it's even worth trying out the freeze spray.

Got the tcon in today. Makes no difference whatsoever. The new tcon whines just like the old one and i still have horizontal lines. Looking at the front of the screen, if I loosen the plug on the leftmost ribbon and move it just right, I can get the lines and whining to go away. If I disconnect all of the ribbons, the entire screen goes a solid uniform white. What do you think? Bad panel?

I am thinking the connector to the t-con on the panel board has a problem, the panel itself may be OK.

Is there anyway to confirm this? No matter what I do, as soon as I flip the lock on the ribbon in question, the issue reappears.
