Dell E177FPc chirping, no picture, LED off

I have no background in soldering, electronic hardware troubleshooting or anything related to electrical/electronic engineering. But damnit, I want to try.

When I plugged the power cable in, the faint chirping would begin but none of the buttons or LEDs would work and there was no picture. I popped it open and removed the power supply and noticed two bad caps (if this problem is likely unrelated to the caps, please stop me now).

Both caps are CapXon KF series, 10v, 1000uF, 105°C. They are slightly bulged at the top and have brown residue (electrolytic fluid?) that appears to have leaked out of the impressed "X."

Looking at datasheets, I found the CapXon are 10x16mm, 1040 ripple, 0.076 impedance. The Rubycon datasheet I'm looking at shows 10v, 1000uF at 10x12.5mm, 1960 ripple, 16 ESR. I can't find any other source that lists the Rubycon's impedance rather than ESR, and I don't know how the two are related. I do know that the replacement's ESR should be lower.

Would these Rubycon caps (10MCZ1000M10X12.5) work as replacements?

https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=1458 is something you can look at for ripple current and ESR

You will have to replace the caps first (and I would recommend any others around it (especially CapXon type)) and then we will see, but that is most likely all that is wrong.

    And those Rubycon's should work

Thanks for the reply. I'll read up on the link to clarify ESR and ripple current, but my confusion lies in the apparent interchangeability of ESR and impedance. I have the CapXon's impedance but no ESR, and I have the Rubycon's ESR but no impedance.

If you are new to this forum, we can help a lot more if you please post clear focused pictures (max resolution 2000x2000 and 2MB) of your boards using the manage attachments button so they are hosted here. Information and picture clarity compositions should look like this post.

We respectfully ask that you make some time and effort to read some of the guides available for basic troubleshooting. After you have read through them, then ask clarification questions or report your findings.

Please do not post inline and offsite as they slow down the loading of pages.

Replacing the bad caps worked (damn ugly solder job but I can't believe it worked my first time trying something like this!). However, I forgot to put the quick release spring on the back of the monitor so I pried the plastic off again and put a heavy scratch right down the middle of the power button board in doing so. Now it doesn't work again.

I can't seem to find a replacement power button board anywhere for this monitor. Any ideas where I can find one (with the ribbon that attaches to the power supply as well) for a Dell E177FPc online?

You probably just cut one or a few traces on the button board. It would be possible to repair those traces with wire soldered between where they should connect.

It looks like that's exactly what I did. The traces are too close together (for me) to solder a wire - I'd inevitably create a short for the two circuits.

The board has a dell part # 6832151300-02. It's here for $9.95, but it's out of stock.

The only other place I could find it is here, but they want $45 for it. No, that's not a typo. Forty-five US dollars for that part.

Anyone know where else I could find this? Or if there could be another part that would work?

You can scratch off where I marked red to expose the copper (or platting) and solder a wire there and then connect it to the other side (wherever it is going)....I chose those spots for the slightly bigger surface area you can work with and less chance for shorting - might as well try since it is useless otherwise.

If you trace the circuits, you will also likely be able to just wire the switches on the front of that board directly to the connector or at least to a spot where you can solder on the appropriate traces.

Grab yourself some no-clean flux (both liquid and paste is fine) and make sure your iron heats up very very well. Put a tiny bit on the joints that look bad and retouch the joint with your iron. This should take of all of the bad-looking joints.
