The service manual has a procedure to update the firmware. Unfortunately, it calls for hooking up 'jig' to a computer and the RS-232 connector, executing software 'iMPACK', etc. No one has reported specific details on either the jig or the software. The only relevant hits from Googling 'iMPACK' refer to LG service manuals.

      Hi all,

      My first post here.

I have a full set of boards available for an LG 42PC3D-UD. Plasma display is bad. LG tech just verified all the boards are good. Right now I have a complete set. Make me an offer on any board you need. Just hoping to help pay for my new television not expecting to pay for it all. :-)

Thanks PlainBill, I too looked through google and could not find anything on the jig. I guess I will try what wizard told another poster about adjusting the va and vs to remove the red sparkles.

Louis I'm ok with my boards right now just need to do some adjusting of the voltage, thanks for offer.

Thanks for finding the information. $167.68 !!!! Sounds like a deal for someone to set up an update service.

Ok I found the ezservice menu. I held the menu on tv panel and menu on the remote for 5 seconds.

If I remember correctly, there are two menus. Pressing and holding Menu on the TV, then pressing Menu on the remote brings up one. Pressing and and holding Menu on the Remote, then pressing Menu on the TV bring up a different one.

Correct again Bill. I have noticed that the red sparkles are almost gone. I haven't adjusted anything.
If they are any, they are very few and are not noticeable. I might remove the cover again and check the voltages. I probably did not have the television warmed up enough when I took the original voltages?

I wonder if the board can be programmed if it is removed from the tv. [if 5v can be applied to the board.]

i have one of these sets ive basically junked because of the damn sparkles.

i love fixing these sets, but they almost always at least have a tell-tale sign of red sparkles, this partucular set was really bad.

if a guy offered a "fix your red sparkles lg tv" mainboard exchange program for ike $100 per board exchange, youd make alot of money fast.

cadillacman I went ahead against my better judgement and bought one of those jigs. I hope it will fix the red sparkles. I notice in low mode they are almost not detected, but when I turn that off, I see the red sparkles.

I guess I could buy up some old boards on ebay and upgrade the firmware on them and see if they work in my set and then resell them? HUM nice idea

You could do that, but a more practical business plan might be to offer a 'firmware upgrade service' for the boards. I'd suggest a two tiered service - If you have a method of testing the boards (a working TV), you can offer upgraded and tested boards for a price. IMHO $100 is a little steep, perhaps $75 with upgradeable trade in. The jig can program several different logic boards; if you don't have a working TV available offer an upgrade service at a more modest price. $35 - $50 seems about right.

This was covered in another thread. There are two service menus. For the first, press and hold the Menu button on the remote, them press the Menu button on the TV. For the second, press and hold the Menu button on the TV, then press the Menu button on the remote.

Doesn't seem to work on my set, it ask's the passwd for both and pushing other menu button just does nothing. only screen view returns to normal. Have to search for the thread.

EDIT: No problems, got the menu open holding both menu buttons on simultaneusly. AC detect..suprise

Sweet the programmer came today. I will do some viewing of the cd online, then adjust the voltages and see if this removes the sparkles.

Unfreaking believeable, I took off the one panel to get down to the logic board and when I removed it, I see a small cap on the logic board with one leg sticking up. I tried to solder it with out success. I will attach a picture of the cap and the board. [any info on the cap will be greatly appreciated. The leg was broke off the cap so it looks like replacement time if someone can give me some information on it.
Thanks..... Just when I thought I was going to get to use my new toy.
