Vizio VX42L, single bad CAP causeing issues?

I recently came across a Vizio VX42L for free, and when I plug it in the logo on the from turns on to orange. When turning it on, the Vizio logo turns white and the TV screen will "blip" on just enough for the channel number to be seen. After that it just sits and you will only get that far if the TV has been sitting unplugged.

I took it apart and pulled the PSU after reading about bad caps on the PSU.
Of all the caps on the PSU, the only one I can find swollen is one thats right behind CN2 plug at the top:

It possible the one bad cap is causing the issue?

    1) We prefer pictures hosted here on this site and not inline for a number of reasons.

    2) That is a United Chemi-con cap (brown color sleeve with a "crown" symbol). If the markings on it say KZG, that series of caps is problematic. KZG caps are more commonly found on computer motherboards and they do not survive in heat. So if the TV runs hot, the caps dry out and/or bloat.

    3) Yes, one cap could cause the entire TV not to work. Replace it with something like a Panasonic FR or FM "low ESR" series cap found at digikey or mouser. Do not use a cap from Radio Shack or Frys as a replacement.

    4) If the other United Chemi-con caps in the same area are KZG, I suggest replacing them as a preventative measure. Caps are relatively inexpensive - like around 60 to 75 cents each. Consider that you may get a working 42 inch TV for under $5 by replacing those caps.

If you are new to this forum, we can help a lot more if you please post clear focused pictures (max resolution 2000x2000 and 2MB) of your boards using the manage attachments button so they are hosted here. Information and picture clarity compositions should look like this post.

We respectfully ask that you make some time and effort to read some of the guides available for basic troubleshooting. After you have read through them, then ask clarification questions or report your findings.

Please do not post inline and offsite as they slow down the loading of pages.

^I've seen more bloated KZG on motherboards than any other capacitor. I guess Chemi-con missed the mark as most of their other capacitors are good.

I did the same thing, I found a 42" LG LCD TV in the dump, so I replaced four capacitors and it's been working ever since.

Regulator U33 on the motherboard can also prove troublesome (logo will go from orange to white, but no picture appears), although as you are briefly seeing an image I doubt it is the problem.
Please do not PM me with questions! Questions via PM will not be answered. Post on the forums instead!

Have to agree on United Chemi-Con KZG - a couple days ago i replaced three bloaters on a LGA775 ASUS motherboard with KZEs and the board runs like new.

        A working TV? How boring!

          Appreciate the info guys.
Well, Ive been unable to locate a 330uf cap or anything within 20% of it locally. Going to have to order it.

You can use a 470 as long as it's low ESR too... but definitely order a bunch if all they sell in your area is general purpose ones.

As for how to ask, well if they can't give specific info about the part they sell, like a datasheet or a catalog listing, they're definitely generic caps and you should stay away.

The closest thing I found at a local Radio Shack was a 470uf 32v. What I need is 330uf 32v.
And it being a Radio Shack, I doubt they have any more info on it.

Here is a somewhat better picture of the cap. Markings on it say "KY" After the crown symbol.

Stop screwing around!!! You have been given good advice. By now you could have identified all of the UCC KZG caps and place an order for Panasonic FMs with Digikey. The order would ship Monday, and be in your hands on Wednesday.
