VIZO HELP - Model: VO420E - Black Screen, No Sound (No Anything)

I don't think this is a capacitor problem but I didn't "unsolder and check the capacitor's with a meter" because by all appearance they look ok (I know, this doesn't positively mean they are ok)! I am not a professional, just trying to save on repair expenses (I hope).
I have a Vizio Model VO420E, 42" LCD. Have a problem like a lot of people mention having: Plug TV into receptacle and yellow Vizio name shows up. Push power button on remote, or the power button on side, and the Vizio name turns from yellow to white. The white Vizio name continues to remain white,,,,,,,but the screen is black and no sound. After reading a lot of different threads on the internet, felt sure I would find bulged or exploded electrolytic capacitors when I removed the back and checked the boards. I was so sure that I bought replacements in advance!!! After visually checking all capacitors on both the boards, I can find NONE that look like they are bad. I didn't actually check any of them with the meter, but feel they are ok! Now what, I thought. The next most popular fix seemed to be the U33 position on the Main Board. Everyone said the U33 part was "amc1117", a 1A Low Dropout Positive Regulator which should register 3.3 volts. After finding the U33 position on my main board (#0171-2271-2855) I find that instead of a power regulator, there is a bigger square chip with about twelve lead coming out of it on all four sides. After googling the part number (TPA3101D2) that there is a power amplifier in the U33 position on my board. I do find six, of what I believe are the regulators on the main board, but none in the U33 position. I checked the voltage on all of these and am posting them below:
    U2 - 5.10v, 3.30v, 2.05v
    U4 - 5.14v, 3.30v, 2.05v
    U5 - 5.10v, 2.63v, 1.37v
    U8 - 3.27v, 1.24v, 0.00v
    U9 - 5.10v, 2.51v, 1.25v
    TU31 - 0.0v, .47v, 0.0v not sure why it has a TU?

Since some of the the above voltage regulators are showing the correct voltage, I presume that my problem "is on" the main board and not the power supply board. Could you give me the voltage that these regulators "should" be showing? I have no schematics or anything else to go by.

I had a little electronics training "years ago" but don't remember a whole lot. I'm not an expert by any means in electronics and would appreciate any help (what so ever) on this problem. Since I have a power amplifier in the U33 position,,,,,,,,,,,then which position on my board would hold the suspected bad voltage regulator that is in the U33 position on all these other boards?? Also, any other ideas of which part could be bad, would also be greatly appreciated! I have also seen posts on other boards where a person with these same symptoms as mine, have replaced both the voltage supply board, and the main board, and still did not fix this problem.

It would be very helpful to see pictures of the main board so we can suggest other things to check, although for now part numbers of all the regulators you checked would help in determining their output voltage. U5 is low (or an odd output @ 1.37V - closest are 1.2V and 1.5V) and U8 looks like it has failed completely.

Also have you checked for all correct output voltages coming out of the power supply - again a picture of the connector may provide identification of the voltages (usually in a small print next to the connector.)

It looks like they used adjustable regulators on this board. The key is the output voltage should be 1.25 volts higher than the reference pin. The outputs of U5 and U8 are not 'standard' outputs, but they are 1.25 volts above the reference voltage.

Pictures of the main board would be useful. Also, you should check the output voltages of the power supply.

Re: VIZO HELP - Model: VO420E - Black Screen, No Sound (No Anything)

I guess I lost my reply the first time so I'll try again!

The U2 through U9 positions all have what looks like to be amc1117 voltage regulators. It has LO16 OVER G1117 on top the surface mounted chip.

The TU31 position has a chip that looks the same as the others but has (I'm going to put a C as the first number on the chip,,,,,,,but it actually looked like a "backwards C" before the numbers) C117LE OVER 17-18L on the surface of the chip.

In the U33 position was a big square chip with about 12 leads running out on each side of the chip with three lines on it. TPA3101D2 OVER 91T OVER AY3V.
I googled it and it said it was a sound amplifier.

I'm going to try to attach the pics again! I know that some of the capacitors look the tops are discolored in the pics,,,,but they're not, they are all shinny silver looking and flat.

The TU31 chip would appear to be a 1.8V LDO (low drop out) regulator. Something is definitely wrong if the voltage readings were done while the Vizio name is white (TV on). Unfortunately it's late, my eyes are tired, and the pictures are really very good. It would be nice to see a close up of that particular area.

Here is the TU31 area on the board. From right to left, the leads read IN, OUT, and there is nothing written on the board to the far left lead. I moved the capacitor in the 2nd pic, it is fuzzy, but the only thing you can see is the circle on the board where the capacitor is. Hope this helps. Another thing, I'm not exactly sure where to measure the voltage coming from the power supply to the main board. Is there one spot I could measure, at the main board, to tell if enough power is coming from the supply board. Pics are attached Thanks again!

After thinking about the voltage reading that you inquired about on the TU31 position, I went back and re-checked it. The first reading was incorrect,,,,but the reading still looks weird!! With the white Vizio light ON, I get .02 volts IN, .47 volts OUT, and still 0.0 volts on the far left lead. Sorry about the other voltage reading.

In answer to the other gentleman's question,,,,,,I see NO VOLTAGES written down on the board.

Even so, probe each pin using your multimeter. Connect the black lead to some exposed part of the case of the TV - I find a mount hole is a convenient place often. Then touch the red probe to each pin on the PSU output connector. Common voltages like 5V or 12V might be easy to notice although it cannot be guaranteed they are correct.

That .02 volts indicates a potential problem. I'm curious as to what the T - as in TR ,TU, etc means. Obviously it's a subsection, but what subsection?

Bill,,,,I haven't a clue either as to why the one board position (TU31) is labeled different than the other five positions(U2, 4, 5, 8, and 9), but it does also have a different part number whereas the other five are the same. Tom, in my voltage readings above, I presume that all the leads are labeled the same on each chip, since they are the same part number (Adj/Out/In) and that's the sequence I put the voltage readings in, although U2 is the only position on the board that is actually labeled on the board (Adj/Out/In). Except for TU31, (which has no label on the left lead, Out, on the center lead, and IN on the right lead). Since all of these five chips in these U positions are the same identical part number, I presume that all the leads are: Adj/Out/In.
On another forum several people had measured the voltage out on the chips on THEIR BOARDS in the "U" positions , and the most common voltage seemed to be 3.3 volts out, that's why I presumed that two of my chips reading 3.3 output voltage were possibly correct, and the ones with less voltage in the output position were not correct,,,,,,but who knows? I tried to get this information from VIZO, the amount of voltage on the voltage out lead, but after about an hour on their chat, I got absolutely nowhere.

Bill, This is really getting complicated for my mind. I now see that the Power Supply is not called "just a power supply", but an "Inverter/Power Supply combination", with a "slave inverter board" (Picture attached) When you compare it to the picture of the power supply that I previously attached, you can see it is one and the same! It also is supposed to have one (or two) Inverter Slave Boards, but I don't see them, do you have any idea where the slave board(s) would be located on this tv??

Please don't do that. I just wasted too much time installing a viewer for doc files. Pictures should be attached using 'Manage Attachments'.

There are several designs for the backlight system on TVs of this size. The easiest way to answer your question is for you to take a sharp, well lit picture of the back of the TV that shows the entire back of the TV. It should be at least 1000 x 1000 pixels. Attach it using 'Manage Attachments' - below the text entry area.

I'm sorry about that Bill,,,,I didn't even realize what I had done until you mentioned it! I called a TV service tech, that had a contract to work on the Vizo's to see if I could get a schematic, or at least the voltages for all of those U position regulators. He said Vizio wouldn't let them release ANY schematics. After I'd talked to him awhile, he did agree to go ask someone about the voltages. He came back and said he couldn't do that either. He then asked about the symptoms of the tv. I told him about the yellow light going to white, and that the tv would turn on and off by the remote, and the button on the side of the tv. I told him that there was NO light on or around the screen, or sound. He told me it was the Inverter board, and that they have a slave inverter board also. I noticed when I looked up the part that there were two separate slave boards. That's when I also notice that it was a Inverter/Power Supply combination on the left side of the tv back, with the main board to the right side,,,,,but I can't see any slave boards at all. OK,,,,I'll try to do the pic the right way! And thanks again!

The numbers on what I thought was just MY Power Supply Board are:

                                    PLHL-T802A or 3PCGM10001A-R

When googled, it brings up the Inverter/Power Supply Board,,,,so I guess it would have to be the right part. The only thing I don't know is if the board is actually bad or not. All the caps looked good, nothing looked burnt or smelled hot when the power is on. Then again, are there slave inverter boards, or is this board it???

I just don't believe there is a slave inverter unless it's built into the power board too. The Tcon board should be in there somewhere too. I think it's there at the top hidden where those two ribbon cables are running to.

the board on shopjimmy cross references with the one you have. it's also on ebay for $45 free shipping or $50 free shipping with best offer, if somebody has been holding that board for a while they might let it go for 30-40 bucks. Now it's up to you to decide if you want to throw a board at it or throw components at it and take a chance. If your in a hurry to get the tv going, I would throw a board. That's usually my case since the wife is griping at my makeshift shop in her kitchen.

I was given this TV from my great uncle. He said it just wouldn't turn on one day out of nowhere, replaced the TV, and gave it to me to possibly fix and use for myself.

Upon bringing it home and plugging it up, it showed a standby light.

I powered it on and without a flashlight, the display showed the "V" but the lighting is very dim, but visible.

The screen seems to blackout and stay black, but with a flashlight I can see the display.

With my Playstation 4 connected via HDMI, and running a game I can hear sound.

Hi, this is my personal laptop, which the original board (lets call it Board A) blew up PU8700 (TPS51486), making a hole on the board, i had left the laptop at my desk one day with the battery fully charged and didn't touch it for a week, but when i tried to turn it on it didn't
Thought the battery was dead, so i plugged in the charger then tried to power on, the power LED blinked once, charged LED still orange, unplugged the charger, plugged in again and I noticed the "magic smoke" smell, so i unplugged the charger, removed the back cover and saw the blown IC (the "magic...

                                          Hi There,

This TV was auto switching off after few seconds with some vertical lines on the screen, so got a new TCON board and replaced it.

After replacing the TCON board it was working fine and i set it up with everything, used for few hours, then had the bright idea to update the software on it. During the update process, TV switched off and now no audio or video. No relay switch sound.

                                          Sony xbr-65x900c main board issues?

Hey guys great forum glad to have found it. I bought a Sony XBR 65X900C cheaply because it didn't work. No signs of life at all not even a light/led. All I hear is a brief high voltage sound when I throw the power to it.

Didn't see any obvious signs of damage so right away started checking voltages. This is what I see:

Panasonic TC-P54VT25 No image. A or D board?

I have a Panasonic TC-P54VT25 that will power on and prime the display but there is no image at all.

The panel is primed as there is a slight glow from the entire panel. This means the problem should be logic related. The service manual also confirms this and recommends replacing the A or the D board.

I have tried to get the TV to display the test sequence but I have been unable to and I don't even know if this TV has a test sequence or not. I tried following tom66's instructions in post #3 on this thread https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=26790. There was...
