when you hit a button on the remote or button board, does the green light respond by dimming a little or no response?

I would try the update, usb method, make sure to follow it to the letter: https://www.sony.com/electronics/sup...loads/W0006532

You can use the resistance setting.

          Re: Sony KDL-46V5100

I did the 'hail Mary' software update, a good idea but it didn't seem to help.

Thanks for rec on using the resistance setting, I ended up getting a better meter that is auto-ranging and also has an audible continuity tone - which is much easier than trying to read the resistance on my old meter.

I tested all the fuses I could find, and they did have continuity, including the big one on the power board. Some of the FXXXX numbers have an arrow that pointed to largely empty areas on the board, for example the attached image for F5505.

Thanks to all for your help, but I suspect I'm not going to get a definitive answer as to which bit of hardware is causing the problem. And new TVs are so darn cheap...

you can test pin 4 of CN6154, neg probe on chassis ground, pos probe just put it in where the wire goes into connector with connector left in place, check with tv off but plugged in [standby] take note of voltage, then leaving it where it is hit power, there should be a voltage change, if it doesn't, then the mainboard doesnt seem to be sending the bl-on signal, probably a mainboard problem, like you said new tvs are pretty reasonable. I would probably give the old one to a friend who likes to fix stuff.

its T-CON suspected naked it and show us what it had and where the 12V got lost at it.

sure, can see if voltage is getting in and out of tcon.

The new multimeter gives much better readings, so I'm pretty confident of these. I tested all 5 CN6154 pins that are wired, in both standby and 'on' modes. Pin 4 seems pretty much dead.

                  Pin Standby On
                  1 0 mV* .5 V
                  2 148 mV 1.15 V
                  3 108 mV 1.9 V
                  4 0 mV 0 mV

                  * pin 1 reads a voltage after TV turned off, but it drains to zero.

How do I see where the voltage was lost?

you wrote before... TV turn on and the front LED indicator lid green.. but no BL no screen. so when you turn it on need to follow the T_CON if it had 12V and there will be test pints VGH..etc.. need to check after you remove the heat sink of T-CON

Thanks for the feedback. Since the device is also lacking sound I thought that it was less likely to be the T_CON, but rather either a power issue or a MOBO issue.
