    Sharp Aquos - DVI only?

I picked up a Sharp Aquosbw LC-37HV4U for a steal of $60 however apparently it needs some sort of box to do much of anything. The back of the TV has no input jacks at all except for two.

What looks to be a DVI-D port and another port that looks like a DFP port but probably is the control for the "box" that has the tuner, input jacks, and everything.
My question is if the DVI-D port really is a DVI port. Surprise surprise my AIW 9800 Pro equipped ShuttleX XP MCE box only has VGA output and not DVI. It would be nice to use it with this TV (and if you by chance have the box I need, please chime in as well).

I tried to search for a "Sharp AVC" system and I think there are hundreds more in front you looking for the same thing. I checked ebay also, not there either.

Oh great, it's going to be one of those components that's unobtanium at low cost. Kind of like how there are MILLIONS of Wacom tablets but only 100 pens.

This may not work. The HDMI connector has support for digital video and digital audio. The DVI connector has support for one analog and two digital video channels. A HDMI to DVI adapter will pass the video signal, but there is no provision on either cable for analog audio.

It really depends on how the Sharp TV is wired to receive audio. If it expects digital audio interleaved with the digital video it will work. If it is wired to receive analog (or digital) audio on the second cable, it won't work.

I can't speak for the Sharp TV, but most early HDTVs that had a DVI connector seem to be wired to get the audio signal on a separate connector.

It sates it's DVI to HDMI. Not the other way around.
I believe that all the audio, control, and stuff like that comes through the second connector and the DVI is DVI only but this is the first device I ever owned that uses DVI so none of the hardware I want to use has a DVI port. Just VGA and this is a DVI-D port, not DVI-A so I can't feed a VGA signal into the screen I don't think.

DVI is video only and I think there are many adapters to convert this. the other, (display input two), looks like a computer pc type input.

There should be a master switch also on this tv. (on side or bottom).

Does it have any speaker output terminals or speakers inside?

I think this is just a display only panel that will turn on with input signal?

Look again. Display input 2 is similar to a Centronics printer connector, just with only 20 pins.

Re: Sharp Aquos - DVI only?

Yeah, there is a master switch and a few other buttons on top (but only power works as the AVC's missing) as well as speaker outputs on the back (as well as on the sides so the included side mounting speakers can plug into something).
Powering on the TV displays "NO SIGNAL" so it can at least try to work without the AVC.

So what is input two and what would you do with it?

If you had a dvi input (from old tv box) you would get a picture?

Re: Sharp Aquos - DVI only?

I`m sorry..display input two (as in second part of hook up cable) would be the audio in and/or control?

I have seen similar cables only they use the round plug like s-video, but they had different pin configurations inside. That would make it proprietary for the audio/video box.
Pioneer had a plug similar to this one. My Hitachi/pioneer has the round plug with the audio in it and also turn on for the pdp.

So you need cable and box to hear audio or pull the back off and trace audio inputs to the amp.

I'm really feeling for this guy. I'm searching for something that will make this TV work. This is my own challenge! lol

The PDF file in my post (#2) shows what these ports are for and how to hook them up. It's just hard to find the unit it was made to work with.

DUDE QUICK!!! There are two of the AVC units on Ebay as of this posting. They are priced at about $180 but well worth it since the set was bought for 60.

                            Just type in "Sharp AVC"

Re: Sharp Aquos - DVI only?

I have one of these and have been using it as a monitor with a DVD player for a few years. I have an AVC box for a similar model (a 30 inch one) but without the second propriatary cable, can't make the 2 work. You have to feed a 720P signal into the DVI input. This input source has to be turned on first to defeat the copy protection. Then the monitor has to be turned on. Wrong order results in lockup. Unplug power and try again. Speakers are external. I feed the audio into a 5.1 amp. I use an upscaling DVD player with DVI output. Set to 720P. Very nice picture. It also works with set top boxes set to 720P. I tested it with a Samsung TS360. Every 20 minutes you get a washed out screen from the copy protection from one of the devices. I got it when this size screen was very very expensive. Low price because of the missing AVC box and cables. Still works after all these years.
