    Sorry for the long delay between followups; I had some RL stuff pop up (or pop out would be more descriptive)! The discoloration is definitely centered around D20. D21 is nearby but also tests fine. I am just now getting around to ordering the replacements, and wouldn't you know it? The UCC LXZ (565-1927-ND) is on backorder until sometime in October! I've scanned for a replacement but the specs don't seem to be as good as the LXZ in this size. Of this list, which would be the best to get (these are the 220uF 16V 6.3mm in stock at Digi-key):

    Panasonic M
    UCC SMG
    Nichicon VR

    There are a few others but are rated for only 1000 hours with a lower ripple rating. Thanks for the continued help!

    Sounds good!

    Please confirm that that diode is actually on the discolored area. There is another component nearby but I can't make it out. Just below that diode and right up against the transformer. Use a flashlight shown through the board to locate what sits right on the mark. Discoloration probably all caused by time/heat and not helped by the bad caps.

    Seems fine physically, and on diode check it measures .549 in one direction and open in the other (seems OK). Will post again once I've recapped.

    Looking at that noflash image, that scorch is pretty dark. Definitely check out what toasty is pointing out.

    There is either a diode or resistor mounted on end between the 2 trafos. Verify that the part is not physically damaged and that if it's a resistor, that it is in tolerance to its markings. Reflow the solder to those pins.

    Thanks for the information on selecting a 50v over a 35v, the reasons make perfect sense. While I don't buy caps in bulk, it's good to understand these things just in case I do in the future!

    Sorry, I should have been more clear -- the scorch marks that I noticed were on the bottom of the PCB. See attached pics, the non-flash picture makes it look worse than it actually is, so I included one with a flash too.

    The 47uF shows up in most PSUs with voltages of 25v, 35v or 50v.
    Of those I think I see 35v most often.
    Basically it's an important cap so there is no reason not to use a 50v as it costs no more to upgrade.
    -
    You don't -have- to use 50v.
    The original voltage should be okay as you are getting better quality caps.

    Us guys [or at least I do] that buy caps in bulk just get the 47uF 50v and use them for the 25v and 35v 47uF caps too, rather that stocking 3 sizes of 47uF caps.

    So: The upgrade is routine based on practical logistics and ecomonics strategies.
    - Did that sound cool, or what?
    In other words it's more of a habit than a requirement.

    It is a critical cap, if it fails 5VSB will go high and kill your mainboard
    Increasing it's voltage rating is a small safeguard that will make the capacitor withstand voltage spikes etc better (If memory serves, which it well might not, I think Wizard did a test where it was found that there could be quite high voltage spikes on this capacitor...)

    You can always go higher in voltage on caps. For example I have 47uf caps at 50 volts but not 35 volts mainly because 35 is a weird value 25 is a more common value but since the case size difference between those voltage caps are minimal at such a low capacitance I stock them at 50 volts.

    Just note that at higher capacitance's the size of the cap will change noticeably so you have to make sure the higher voltage value will fit. Also don't go too high in voltage when dealing with low ESR caps like 2 or 3 voltage steps up on the datasheet since ESR will rise as the working voltage increases.

    Minor darkening of the board around components that heat up like transistors or transformers is normal.

    Scorch marks might just be dried glue. There's usually not much under the main transformer, some small parts near it that may have committed suicide. Look for any burnt resistors/capacitors/diodes, etc... around or under the transformer.

    Will change the 47uF to a 50v and keep the rest the same. I had missed that modification in the other thread. Just for my understanding, what's the reasoning behind bumping up the voltage from 35v to 50v on this cap?

    As a side note, I was examining the PCB last night a little more and noticed there are some minor scorch marks under the larger transformer. I'll post a picture this evening, but is this something to be concerned about?

    Original mains caps are snap-in.

    85°C on -input- caps is not a problem. The originals were 85's. Yes, 105 is "preferred" but not critical here. Everything else in there should be 105's.

    I found BigPope to be high on shipping to US. For a similar Antec recap, the shipping was going to be $25. Nuts for 20 caps. Nor do I care for any site that does not post prices up front. I have no intention playing email tag asking for quotes and also feeling like there is some "game" going on with prices. Like a car dealer with no prices on the sticker.

    Would you please post up what you are getting from where before you order? A quick review to be sure your on the right track.

    I recently came into posession of a Heathkit IO-4205 5MHz Dual Trace Oscilloscope. The documentation is copyright 1978. I'm told it works.

    I opened it up to check the caps before I applied power, and found the following black caps and wanted to know what they were. They are on the power supply board. I was able to read the name and model and came up with, "Nytronics 162J-1, 0.1uF, 20% tolerance, 2000VDC."

    Hello!

    I have two projects on my work bench. One is a friends dead JBL Xtreme speaker with a blown voltage regulator and corresponding bulged and shorted cap. That cap has clear markings so I know what replacement I need for it.

    The other project however is a whole different deal. It's a Zoom 9000 guitar effect from the 90th that has developed a devil hound howl when there is no input from the guitar. I'm guessing caps problem. So, since I don't really use this effect anymore I thought it would be a perfect project to learn on.

    I'm trying to repair two old VCRs, they both have bad caps. One has leaky ones, the other would barely run until I subbed in some caps from another power supply I had laying around (though they are the wrong values). This vcr works for an hour or two, but then the power supply starts whining and the picture gets lines in it. I didn't replace all the secondary caps, so another voltage might still be problematic, or the values I used are too far off.
    I've been on mouser and digikey but the options are a bit overwhelming. I just need some new ones that will work. They don't need to be top quality,...

    Good evening

    I recently aquired a rev 1.1 Gigabyte 60XT, and was suprised of the amount of leaking caps for a motherboard of the P3 era. Especially the way the 330µf caps seems like the housing discolored even.
    Now, there are some 3300µF 6.3V KZG series around the CPU. Would it be OK to replace them with something like EEUFR1A332 ? (Panasonic FR 3300µF 10V). Or was this board designed around very low ESR caps?

    But I was also suprised about the bigger boys, which are 330µF 25V.
    Could it be they used 25V caps because they were cheaper / available at that time?...
