Belkin 12v 1A switching router PSU adaptor

    Hi

I have 2 Belkins F5D8320 routers. One of them i no has a faulty PSU brick adaptor. I have proven this by trying the PSU brick adaptor from the good one and the faulty router comes back to life and works great.

Now i need some additional education in understanding the PSU types.

Normally in the past when ever a PSU brick has gone faulty on a non Belkin routers eg Linksys wrt54g or Netgear, i have just got a normal 12v 1A generic oem PSU brick adaptor (To basically match the voltage, Load, and correct polarity) and this has always worked satisfactorly.

The Belkin however will not work on any of the generic PSU brick adaptors. When i say don't work i mean no lights or activity on the router. When i try the good Belkin PSU brick adaptor on my other routers of the same voltage, load, and polarity they don't seem to power up the other routers.

I assume that this is because the Belkin router PSU must be switched (As stated on its Brick PSU adaptor) and the Linksys and Netgear non switching.

The only diiference within the PSU brick adaptor markings is that the Belkin adaptors state "switching".

I would be grateful if someone could educate me a little on switching and non switching 12V 1A power brick adaptors.

All comments would be gratefully appreciated.

    Many Thanks

Re: Belkin 12v 1A switching router PSU adaptor

On switching adaptors, the voltage is usually regulated. That means output voltage is close to 12v no matter if you put 1A of load on it or leave it unloaded. Linear (non switching) are usually unregulated. That means the voltage of unloaded 12v linear adaptor will be higher than 12v (I mostly see 17-18v) and will fall down to 12v when loaded. Another thing to watch for on different adaptors (this applies for switching and linear) is polarity on the output connector.

You can also tell an adaptor is switching or linear just by looking and weighing them. Switching ones are usually smaller and lighter. Linear ones are bigger and heavier, because of the big transformer they have inside.

I think it would work for belkin router if you find a switching 12V 1A adapter with same polarity on the connector.

Thanks for that reply mur which was very easy to understand.

I spoke to Belkin who told me that there was a life time warranty and have despatched me a free replacement. They didn't want the faulty one back.
When i get the replacement i will try to open the faulty psu to see if i can find whats gone wrong when i get some spare time.

      Many Thanks

When you do, post some pictures here. I repaired a 5v switching power adapter from a D-Link router not too long ago, and it turned out a real easy fix. Hopefully, yours will be too.

I found this 10 minute youtube video a couple of months ago and it explains it in very good detail with pictures, and diagrams. "AC Power Adapter Engineering and Repair"

This one is interesting too from the same person

Thanks for them quality posts above.
I am just waiting for the replacement before i crack open the faulty psu. When i have the replacement i will provide some photo's.
The youtube videos have been great.

            Kind Regards

Desoldering gun station modified to use a 18 volt @ 20 amp switching power supply
              by sam_sam_sam
I have wanting to do this project for quite sometime now and I finally found a switching power supply that will work on this desoldering gun station ZD-915 that the original switching power supply took a shit and just was not worth trying to fix it because this switching power is not quite big enough to handle the heater element and the vacuum pump

One note when I tested the switching power supply and the voltage control board I noticed that this desoldering gun heat up much faster than the original switching power supply which I was really surprised by to the point that I might buy...

Modification to a ZD-987 desoldering/soldering station using a external switching power supply
              by sam_sam_sam
I have been working on this concept for quite some time now with limited success but recently I found a switching power supply that is setup for the voltage that this soldering station needs to operate at however it also needs part of the secondary circuit from the original switching power because you need several voltage rails

I once tried to get a ZD-915 desoldering station to work on a 18 volt battery power supply but unfortunately things did not go well but I did find a work around but I might try this idea again but going at a little differently more about this another time...

Why does my ISP router hate my "homemade" power supply??
              by double_DD
              Hi all,

It's gonna be a long intro, so please buckle in, as it's a problem that's been bugging me for several days now. Thanks in advance.

So, I have 2 modems/routers, whatever the proper nomenclature is, one from ISP and one mine. I want to power them via USB-C rather then their original mains adapters (for reasons, that are hard to explain to sane people). Both routers come with 12V/3A mains adapters.
For this purpose I acquired USB-C charger with 250W and 5 ports, 2 of which can supply max 20V/3A. Since 12V isn't a standard PD voltage option (and to future proof,...

Panasonic switching power supply daughter board has two 27uf @ 50 volt capacitors which I do not keep in stock
              by sam_sam_sam
I did not have any 27uf @ 50 volt capacitors but one nice thing is that it has enough room for two capacitors in parallel a 22uf and a 4.7uf @ 50 volts 22 plus 4.7 equals 26.7uf which so very close to 27uf I will show some pictures of it sometime tomorrow

This is one of the shit est boards I seen in a very long time and it was the daughter board the traces just lifting off the board I had to use the capacitor leads to repair the the traces and the main board is not any better because I had to repair several traces for the daughter board to the main board

              After all of...
