    TNY27x thermal shutdown issues

Few years ago I found a PSU (Delta, 500W) that works fine few minutes and then turn off itself. later I found that standby 5V (and ~12V to controller) ic TNY279 overheats and then shut down. replaced with new one and problem solved.

and I found few other PSUs with same problem. two mobile USB power packs too. all these had TNY278, 279

Anyone here had similar experience ?

How these chips fail such a way? looks like internal mosfet on resistance increase or current sense element failure..

I have replaced a few of them myself I think they might just be over stressed and just fail

While main competitors like ST or Fairchild or Linear have different package which require PCB thermal pads / vias on PCB to dissipate heat the top line TNY290PG claim 36W in SO-8 package (magic!). Conclusion is yours.

Ummmmm ... is Power Integrations claiming their TNY290PG will dissipate 36 watts? Or are they claiming it can, with appropriate circuitry, produce 36 watts of output power? I think this is a, "To ask is to answer," situation.

Power Integrations has been around for at least 25 or 30 years. They aren't fly-by-night flakes.

Power Supplies should be boring: No loud noises, no bright flashes, and no bad smells.

Found the TNY279PN faulty in a 580W bq atx power supply. Generating the 5VST. First checked all electrolytic caps and desoldered many other parts.
The power supply only works for about half a minute with all voltages ok. Then shutting down and after one more minute it is ready again.
Finally I had the chance to look at the ps with a thermal cam and could clearly see the TNY (half under heat sink) heating up until about 85°C. Then it shuts itself down and when cooled to around 50°C it comes back on...

I will look for a replacement part but it seems not the best solution in a ps like this to me.

+5VSB is running 24/7 constantly and every year is 8,760 hours. The Power Integrations TNY appear to age. The power mosfet inside seems to fade away and have high on-resistance and heat generation.

                Short update:
After replacing the TNY, the psu is running fine.
The new TNY279PN isn't warming up at all.

Dell Latitude 5570 Ambient thermal sensor reading -127 Degrees C

Forgive me this is my first request for help on this forum, so if i've screwed up or not followed the rules i should have i apologise profusely.

I have a Dell Latitude 5570 that was randomly shutting down, on further investigation i found that the machine had been shutting down due to thermal events as noted by windows event viewer.
My investigations lead me to the dell diagnostics screen, where i found that there were two sensors out of range which had been causing the shutdowns, one of which was the GPU thermal sensor and the other the ambient sensor.
                  I opened the...

Laptop overheating after replacement thermal paste
                  by Veyron7887
Hi. I have Asus X55C laptop from year 2013. It has i3-2328M CPU. I replaced stock thermal paste with high quality thermal paste. Before thermal paste replacement, I measured CPU temperature Around 65-70 degrees Celcius with stock thermal paste. If after the replace thermal paste, I measured CPU temperature around 80-84 degrees Celcius and fan don't stop when system is idle. I replaced the thermal paste several times but still did not change. Where is the problem?

Hi, this is my personal laptop, which the original board (lets call it Board A) blew up PU8700 (TPS51486), making a hole on the board, i had left the laptop at my desk one day with the battery fully charged and didn't touch it for a week, but when i tried to turn it on it didn't
Thought the battery was dead, so i plugged in the charger then tried to power on, the power LED blinked once, charged LED still orange, unplugged the charger, plugged in again and I noticed the "magic smoke" smell, so i unplugged the charger, removed the back cover and saw the blown IC (the "magic...

                  Denon AVR-S740H thermal shutdown help
                  by ajvpb
The culprit - A new to me Denon AVR-S740H. Protection history shows 60 instances of thermal detector (A) shutdown.

Powering it up for a few minutes and it gets noticeably warm on the bottom of the case where the +12, -12, +5 voltage regulators are. After 20 minutes I would call it hot, and approaching too hot to keep your hand on that part of the case. So the thermal detection is doing its job and not tripping erroneously.

The heat is clearly coming from the small voltage regulators that use the case as a heat sink. It has a bridge rectifier that converts the AC...

                  Can thermal paste cause corrosion?
                  by caspian
                  Dear members,

I have got an ordinary gray thermal paste that has no name/model on the box.
I put some of this thermal paste on a 128-pin QFP IC. A bit of this thermal paste was put on pins of the IC.
I tried to clean the pins by thinner but the thermal paste cannot be cleaned from the pins properly. because the pins are tiny and the thermal paste is stuck between them.
Is it possible that the thermal paste damages pins of the IC in long term by creating corrosion or something?
Is it safe to leave the thermal paste on the pins?
                  I guess the thermal paste...
