Dealing with a 90W Astec PSU with a shorted 12V rectifier. What is a suitable replacement for the one shown? Not finding anything out there for this.

Suitable replacement for shorted rectifier
Don't buy those $10 PSU "specials". They fail, and they have taken whole computers with them.
My computer doubles as a space heater.
Permanently Retired Systems:
RIP Advantech UNO-3072LA (2008-2021) - Decommissioned and taken out of service permanently due to lack of software support for it. Not very likely to ever be recommissioned again.
Asus Q550LF (Old main laptop, 2014-2022) - Decommissioned and stripped due to a myriad of problems, the main battery bloating being the final nail in the coffin.
Kooky and Kool Systems
- 1996 Power Macintosh 7200/120 + PC Compatibility Card - Under Restoration
- 1993 Gateway 2000 80486DX/50 - Fully Operational/WIP
- 2004 Athlon 64 Retro Gaming System - Indefinitely Parked
- Main Workstation - Fully operational!

Re: Suitable replacement for shorted rectifier
"GI" is General Instruments. Per this, https://cdn.badcaps-static.com/pdfs/...f1f8a30f9f.pdf , I think that's a 150V part. Both Mouser and Digi-Key carry the part.
The date code on the part looks like early 1989, so it might be worthwhile to check the output caps (and if you replace them, probably an older series would be better for stability).PeteS in CA
Power Supplies should be boring: No loud noises, no bright flashes, and no bad smells.

Re: Suitable replacement for shorted rectifier
For an old-ass PSU like that with a rather weak 12V rail, it probably really isn't that important what rectifier you get on the 12V rail.
Though if you really wanted something closer to the original, just about any 16 Amp, 100-200V -rated FR (fast recovery) rectifier in TO-220 case would do.
I agree with PeteS; check the output caps. They're over 30 years old now. Surely there are older e-caps still in service. But generally, if the device has been sitting powered off / unplugged for many years, it's best to check the caps or maybe even reform/recondition them before applying full power (that is, if you don't intend to replace them because they are bulky/expensive.)Comment

by unimatrix93Hello everyone,
I'm trying to fix up my battery charger. Where I found a dead schottky rectifier.
This is the dead component PTR30L120CTF:
PTR30L120CTF datasheet(1/7 Pages) PFC | 30A 120V HPTR Schottky Rectifier (alldatasheet.com)
And I have a spare 30CPQ150:
30CPQ150 datasheet(1/5 Pages) IRF | SCHOTTKY RECTIFIER (alldatasheet.com)
Can I use this diode as a replacement or if not, can you recommend me a proper replacement?
I cannot find the exact unit anywhere besides aliexpress and such.
Thank you guys!

by r2digitalI have a klipsch kda-500 that would turn on and allow me to get into the web management but it was picking up a lot of noise from audio sources so i decided to replace the smd caps on the power supply along with radial one. Some one was in here before me and they basically burned the bottom side of the traces off for the radial cap but i was able to repair it without any real problem. I thought i did a good job sourcing out replacement caps but apparently not and now i can't get the power supply to turn on it just constantly try's to keep turning on. Attached is a picture of the power supply before...2 Photos

by ezeniaHello,
I am not sure where exactly to put this thread, so hopefully this is the best place.
I have a USB fan that has suddenly been unable to increase its speed. It's just stuck on the first speed. This fan has 3 speed settings. Each time you press the power button, the speed of the fan should increase.
The way the button works with each press is: Speed 1 > Speed 2 > Speed 3 > OFF
Speed 2 and 3 don't currently work any more.
I suspect the issue might be with what looks to be some kind of driver IC. It is a 16-pin... -
by YanlebHi every one. I just want to share the successful repair of my shorted Panasonic TNPA4782AB SC board.
I don't usually do it but so many parts were shorted that I decided to buy the ShopJimmy repair kit instead of sourcing each components individually. Here is the list of components the kit contained, with a remark indicating if I needed that part or not :
D608, good
D618 RF101L4S, good (See warning 1 below)
D619 RF101L4S, good (See warning 1 below)
D865 RF101L4S, shorted (See warning 1 below)

by modtoolHi to all,
the owner of this machine gave it to me after having opened it to take off the dust from the inside, telling me that after that it didn't start anymore.
I found that one of the DrMOS (AOZ5016QI) on the CPUCORE was shorted between VIN and VSWH, and that one of the two n-mos connected to the power jack was shorted aswell.
I unsoldered the two shorted components and verified that there were no other short circuits, then decided to power the mainboard, firstly with the lab power supply, then with its original HP 200w charger, but the behaviour is the same, the board starts... - Loading...
