    SPI 400 PSU 1000uf to 1200uf??

I've read that on motherboards it's ok to go up in capacitance but would it be ok to do the same within a power supply?? i have a couple bulging teapo 6.3v 1000uf caps and only have 2x 10v 1200uf replacements on hand. hopefully replacing the caps will get this sucker back up and running. i noticed some electrical noise coming from the unit as well.

    thanks in advance

No problem there. That's only a 20% increase in capacitance. However, I would suggest you replace other similar capacitors of 470 ufd or more, even the ones that still look good.

thanks so much for your reply. i'll check my inventory of capcitors and perhaps place an order with digikey.

      thanks again

        Hi Kris

The ESR rating is very important for Power Supply Capacitors.
You probably want to use a Low-ESR cap like a Nichicon PW or Panasonic FC
A lot of better PSUs use United Chemicon's KZE series or sometimes KY.

Whose power supply? Brand, model, wattage?

Before you go spending time and money, let's make sure it's not a known bad brand or model.

            Hi it's a Sparkle (Fortron I'm guessing) FSP400-60THN 400watt

I have really bad luck, as a Computer Technician I've installed 100's and 100's of Sparkle power supplies. Over the 12 years that I've been in this industrial I've noticed very low failure rates on these supplies. My previous job we worked on major tenders for the school board, government, corporations like 3M and Fortron or Sparkle was always our go to power supply. Our warranty with these clients were either 2-3 year guarantees. Out of the 1000's of systems, I can honestly say that very few repairs resulted in replacing a power supply. Anyways, back to my bad luck I've had 3 sparkle supplies fail over the last 5 years!!!! I'm not hard on my equip and i know how to care for it. I just think it's funny. oh well enough rambling

            thanks everyone

              Re: SPI 400 PSU 1000uf to 1200uf??

i salvaged some 16V 1200uf caps from a dead p4p800-se motherboard. the high pitch electrical noise is gone and I'm running prime95 and a few other apps to see how stable this system will be, so far so good.

when my wife found out the other night that my main system was down she looked at me and said "don't you even think about taking over my acer netbook" lmao. well i'm glad i got it fixed and saved some dollars on a new psu. i'm also glad i don't have to look at the tiny 9" netbook screen anymore haha

I'm still curious to know if this model has problems??

              thanks again

Nope, no problems noted. Sparkle/FSP recommended by several members.

Did you get a peek at the other cap manufacturers in there?

What brand/series were the replacement caps from the mobo?

umm, usually i replace those 2 x 1000uF (or 1500uf) with 2x 2200/2700/3300 ones. dont have problems so far. funny that oftenly i see 2200uf in one PSU but 1000uf in other one with exactly the same design. so i think dont worry too much.

IBM NetVista Pentium III - USI Motherboard w/ Teapo SC
                    by iMic
                    Hi folks,

I have a couple of IBM NetVista desktop computers from around 2000-2001. They have Universal Scientific Industrial (USI) Pro286i motherboards, 733MHz Pentium III processors, and a whole bunch of bad Teapo capacitors. One board has visibly bad and venting capacitors, while the other doesn't look too bad so far.

The board with venting caps works fine, while the good looking board occasionally refuses to power on unless it's left for about 30 seconds after connecting the power - even with a known good power supply. (I am however aware I'll need to check the PSU...

Calculating ESR from tan delta -- tan delta's dependence on capacitance
                    by Junkrepair
I'm finally recapping my Soyo K7VX6 motherboard (aka KT600 Dragon Ultra) and replacing Sacon SZ-series caps. The Sacon SZ datasheet provides a spec for tan delta, but not for ESR, while the candidate replacement caps are specified in terms of ESR.

I found this nice little description of the conversion:

                    Calculating capacitor ESR from Tan(delta)
                    https://forum.digikey.com/t/calculat...-from-tan/2633

It mentions that a general spec for tan delta has to be adjusted for the specific capacitance before plugging tan delta into the formula...

I found used PSU AcBel PC6001 ~250W from IBM thinkcenter Core2Duo system. Almost every output rail caps were bulged except 12V rail single cap. caps were Ltec

Since I have no access to buying new branded caps, I'm going to replace caps with used caps I pulled from dead PSUs and Motherboards.

I need cap experts ideas about it.

Normally, I never post repairs this quick after I do them, because… I am usually very slow. But today, I’m making an exception here. Why? No idea. Perhaps only because the repair details are still “fresh” in my head… which is ironic, given this is a 16 year old monitor that hardly anyone will care about today. It is new to me, though. I picked it up last November from someone on my local Craigslist. It wasn’t very close to where I live, but was close to a family friend that I had to go visit anyways. So after watching the posting on Craigslist for a few weeks and seeing it getting...

Dell Optiplex GX260 - Advice Needed for Polymodding Motherboard
                    by SwedishDiesel
                    Howdy folks,

I have an Optiplex GX260 that blew a couple of those troublesome Nichicon HM series (ultra low ESR) electrolytic capacitors. Because said caps are obsolete, they are pretty much impossible to find on the market; I did find a listing for some but I believe they are counterfeit. I feel the easiest thing to do would be to replace all the blown caps with polymer ones. I am by no means an expert in electronics, and I've found a fair bit of conflicting information, so any guidance or confirmation would be greatly appreciated. While from a practical standpoint it's not worth...
