    E Power EP-550XPF

A few months ago (before finding this website) I purchased an epower EP-550XPF from Newegg (on sale) as a replacement for an older Pentium 4 machine. From what I have learned over the past several weeks, I finally opened the case and took a peek inside. It looks like an older design with the simple transistor switcher in the 5VSB circuit, uses a TL3842P PWM chip, and TL494 & LM339 chips on the add on supervision pc board. In its favor, it has two fans and two huge heat sinks. A very heavy power supply. I did notice some Fujitsu capacitors on the output side. I will try to post some photos later.

The computer power supply I am using is not giving trouble, just getting some age on it. Now I am somewhat fearful of using power supply designs using unreliable 5VSB designs which don't have overvoltage overcurrent protection. Replacing the working power supply with this new one might turn into a disaster!

So thought I would start this thread and see what experiences others have had with epower power supplies, perhaps the same model.

    Thanks. Tom

Fujitsu caps? Not likely - most probably Fuhjyyu (pronounced Fuhk-yu in many places), which is a well-known crap cap. Not the worst out there, but still crap. You should replace *all* the Fuhjyyus on the secondary side if you can - they're a bigger reliability issue than the discrete +5Vsb circuit, which may also have one critical cap in it.

Epower/Topower is known for using questionable caps. Fuhjyyu is very likely, and they still use those caps to this day under the name Asia-X. They've used other names off the back of a Chinese truck too, like Samson and Viva. Their idea of premium capacitors is usually Teapo.

If it's a few years old, I'd plan on a recap soon.

          Yeah, Fuhjyyu for sure.

Oh joy! Now the cat's seen 'em. :P

Yup. Know that symbol all too well.

If you pull 'em, chances are very good they'll be under capacitance spec or at the very bottom of the ±20%. (i.e. 1000uF = 800uF) That might give you some headroom when it comes to finding a can size that will fit.

Also noticed in your schematic(s) that you're using mF instead of uF. You mean microfarad, correct?

              Nice work!

that chip should have protection...to some extent...
offcourse chip u used in 250w crap psu mod is better....
