Old Dell PS 5201-7D 200 watt psu

Have inherited old Dell psu. Somewhat strange in that wires to 20 pin mobo connector don't match the usual plan. PWM is UC3845 and protection chip is TSM110 - could not find data sheet for this one. 5VSB works but +5/+12/+3.3 are all dead. Date of mfg stamped on case is 12-07-00. The Dell it came out of is either unique or antique. Anyone know anything about it?

Dell departed from the standard PSU pinout in late 1998 they are proprietary supplies. They have since returned to the standard ATX layout.

I have seen special conversion harnesses allowing you to use standard ATX supplies on these boards.

Those adapters are to use standard PSU with Mobo that everell's PSU is supposed to go to.
They don't convert his/her PSU to standard.

Dell used those on late generation P3's.
Not sure if some or all.

          Ah-ha! Gotcha.

So, if you want to go FROM Dell PSU TO ATX mobo, then it looks like it's a homebrew project.

As I recall you can get by with switching the wires around in the plastic connector.
You should look up the pin-outs and check wire colors first because I think some of the Dells used non-standard wire colors for the voltages.

            Here is the odd-ball pin-out.

              Oops.
Either that drawing is wrong or my memory is.
              There is no +3.3v shown.

Nope, looks like that PSU has no 3.3v rail.

The 3.3v is there, but not in the 20 pin.
3.3v is in the 6 pin mobo connector.

Gotta love Dell just replaced 2 toasted HL Data Storage drives on 2 different Dimensions one was an 04 model and the other an 05 model. The drives weren't even heavily used.

One would read CDs but not burn CD-Rs the other wouldn't read Data CDs but would read music CDs and not would burn CD-Rs with a bit of a racket.

Dell always seems to cheap out on parts and I'm sure these proprietary supplies were no different.

Thank you Mr. PCBonez - I checked out the website with the pinout information. The 5VSB came up just fine, and when I grounded the proper color coded wire (PS on), the other voltages came on just fine. Guess someone dumped this PS because it didn't have a standard pinout. I don't have any use for it now either, but it was great to learn that you should never plug in a power supply and turn it on without making sure it has a standard pinout!

Older HL drives are pretty decent Krankshaft. Bet you didn't even try cleaning the lasers first.

I had that same problem with our dell. We bought a lightscribe dvd-ram drive for it because the cd-rw it came with was acting up. I didn't know this at the time, and i swapped it out with my computer's (at that time, it was a 667mhz p3, about 3 years ago.) white compaq (lite-on) 40x cd-rom. For some reason, that dell's cd-rw would write cd's just fine, but when you tried to read, it would be very slow. I played red alert 2 just fine with the compaq 40x, but with that drive, it would read the cd so slowly the game ran really bad.
