Even that guy couldn't spin these crappy PSUs.

I love the freebies though so I will shut up about them now .

Once I have an opinion of a product based on first hand experience little can be done to change it.

Especially not some spin doctor covering turds in chocolate and calling them candy.

That was a truly enlightening article acstech... thanks for going to the trouble of posting it, 2006 is a fair time ago though I doubt the OGMs have reduced in number any since it was published.

Personally I do a fair bit of back ground research on any give potential purchase BEFORE I buy it, someone's recommendation & a 'fluffy' review will never be sufficient, I can only hope that other OLUs develop similar strategies to avoid being manipulated

Yeah me too! problem is many people with effected Antec PSUs try to peddle them off on Flea-bay and you end up bidding against somebody who thinks the damn things are the ultimate PSU (because their OL friends said so)

Re: Bad Antec experience, need a new PSU

I think I've already told this story but I got one off Fleabay that was supposed to be running when I attempted to power it up it started surging on and off. I was using an old 300 Mhz mobo so the load was light.

It seems like the previous owner left it on all the time which kept the caps hot which lowered their ESR so the supply could work. However when it was allowed to cool down the ESR rose and the PSU couldn't function properly anymore.

I expected to recap it in the first place but i just wanted to check its condition first. Fukyuus inside ready to hatch as usual.

I know I keep seeing their reputation is intact in alot of places. Alot of people have short memories I guess. That or it's just this throw away society we've become.

So YOU'RE who I'm bidding against!

Seriously, maybe it's just that there's a whole lot of recappers out there who know that Antecs are an easy fix?

Re: Bad Antec experience, need a new PSU

I once sent the seller an email to see if he/she was dumb enough to leave it show in the listing. (Hoping to keep the price down to something realistic.)

"Hey, are the caps blown in this one yet?"

To my surprise the auction was canceled by the seller.

That also happened once when I asked a seller how long the heat sink had been missing on a server board's north bridge.

Maybe... but unless you can secure an economical supply of quality capacitors the repaired unit can set you back a hefty wad of cash, and in Australia such caps can't be bought locally

Not to mention the time. I don't know about any of you, but for the value of my time I could buy a FSP replacement instead of recapping an Antec and come out ahead.

That depends on what I'm doing.
Won't work if I'm pushing lots of drives.
Affordable FSP's up around 500-600 watts *and with heavy (190w-ish +) 3.3v+5v combined power are hard to find because most of they've cut back on the combined power to give more amps to 12v rails.
                                    - And the FSP's I've found with enough combined power needed recapped anyway.

TP2's have the amps where I want it and blown-up TP2's are easy to find.

Of course. I was thinking more along the lines of those stupid SP 350's. Those get replaced with these things:

                                      http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817104901

Cheap and effective. They don't have the greatest caps either, but I haven't seen one blow up or get any bulging or leaking caps yet.

How long have you been using them?

I remember researching those ATXxxx-xx type FSP part numbers and deciding against them but that was a while ago and I don't remember why. Maybe it's time to re-look.

Have you tried them in sizes other than 350 watt?

Since the first of July 2007.

Used mainly the 400w, which is no longer available from Newegg.

I've only used the ATXxxx-PA ones, not the PN ones. The PA ones have better ratings IMO.

The power supply is 2020 Corsair HX1200 modular power supply.

Cause of damage: I connected EVGA molex cable to the Sata port and test it with a ATX tester. Since the pin out on the EVGA is wrong, result in the 12V pin shorted to the 5V pin, in the 12V back-feeded to the 5v port.

Damage: Power supply shorted out, shut off itself internally, damaged the 5v or 3v rail or the monitoring circuitry. The self protection circuit shut off the power supply when power up because it detected some abnormal/defect. I waited a few minutes, let it self reset then try to re power up....

The power supply is 2024 newest version of NZXT C850 modular power supply.

Anyone have experience with an RC driven temporary "ON" transistor switch?

                                            Hello,

The idea is to use a transistor to activate a latching relay once a voltage is applied but to prevent a constant voltage from being applied to the relay coil, I thought it might be a good idea if it were possible to make sure that the voltage applied to the coil is temporary even though the source voltage could be "ON" for long periods of time.

This is the circuit that I came up with. I have not tested it yet because I don't have the relay yet, though I am looking for anyone who might have experience with this kind of a setup to hopefully offer some advice,...

While recaping Antec Earthwatts EA-380 I've broke one side of unknown smd element, it have no print, it's flatter and darker than smd capacitors on this board, shaped more like resistor but it's not resistor ofc. Unfortunetly the printed description was under it and element was glued to the board so I cant read/tell the letter before element number too. Have anyone any idea what it is? Maybe is there any diagram of this PSU?
