Yes, something has changed. I always pay close attention to the secondary rail that is being monitored by the regulation loop. Working without an oscilloscope is like working blind, it is useful to see what peak voltage rails are reaching and for seeing ripple. A DMM with Peak Hold is the next best thing.
When a secondary rectifier diode is followed by a bypass capacitor, a series choke and another bypass capacitor, the condition of the first capacitor is very important. If it has high ESR, large ripple voltage will develop across it and the choke causing the voltage across the second capacitor to be much lower than the secondary + peak voltage.Last edited by rievax_60; 03-03-2017, 04:29 PM.Comment

I am not convinced the switching regulator is starting with that Vin at 13v, does anybody have any ideas why it is so low, when this is up to 16v it should start.Comment

But this never gets above 13.2v to start it, just measured it again using the touch/hold function on the Fluke as you suggested.Comment

I have actually found a defective component, D953.
I replaced it with an equivalent, but alas, no change in the operation, but could this point to something else defective, does it help to understand the issue?Comment

BINGO away to go!
Reviewed D953 and found the solder pad damaged on PCB, reworked the arrangement.
So to wrap up, IC901 and D953 were defective.
Been studying the diagram, but I do not understand how the IC901 Vin voltage was being dragged down.

D953 produces the rail that is monitored by the regulation loop. The condition of this diode will not prevent the IC901 VCC reaching the 16V start voltage.
If D953 was short, IC901 will be highly stressed by forward overload current. All of the transformer windings will develop little voltage. IC901 VCC will not be sustained.
With D953 open, there will be no regulation feedback. All other rails will go momentarily over voltage. IC901 is likely to sense this and shut down.

D953 was passing current both ways.
So the chain of events would have been, D953 breaking down (just because it gave up or mains spike?) and taking out IC901 due to stress from the forward overload current created?

This is my first attempt at troubleshooting a board like this, I know I could just buy a new board but I'm curious to figure out how this works. I've been testing different components in the evenings this week and I think the problem is with the IC failing to start up for some reason. When the board is plugged in there is no standby voltage.
Then today it randomly sprung to life like a zombie but shortly died thereafter. I have no idea why it would have done that and its the first time I've seen it running. I discharged capacitors on the board last night, then it was sitting today.... -
by fharris1977Hi. I got a Vizio with no power or standby, and won't turn on with remote or button. I checked the voltages on the connector and all read 0.00V or nearly 0(0.050 ON/OFF pin). None of the pins are labeled STB for standby although I do see some 5V pins. Other than the obvious standby led, which isn't coming on, is there a way to check for standby voltage on this PS. I'm trying to see if my problem is the PS or mainboard. Some Vizios I have fixed with no standby led me to think it was the PS but it turned out being the mainboard. Any experience with this set would be greatly appreciated.1 Photo

by dkneyleThis relic from a technology path that came to a dead end (but still has historical interest) was brought in with a dead SMPS, which is based around a MK1210 device. I got it going after a battle. It seems to have a strange design - if it's not getting feedback that the secondary is OK it cause the big FET to go into full conduction and overloads resulting in a blown fuse at best or something worse! I'm using a Dim Bulb Tester (70W/230V) which thankfully has saved the day a number of times whilst repairing.
